Re: Lightweights : Carlos Ortiz vs. Pernell Whitaker
I will pick the great Pernell Whitaker because of his speed and all around boxing abilities. I don't think that the great Carlos Ortiz would be able to push him back with his upper body strength. WHITAKER ON points. Whitaker was also very strong inside.
Re: Lightweights : Carlos Ortiz vs. Pernell Whitaker
Ortiz wins big, by stoppage around round 9. Even George Benton admitted Whitaker wasn't an all-time great, merely tops in a weak era.
Re: Lightweights : Carlos Ortiz vs. Pernell Whitaker
Despite the late George Benton's opinion, do not downgrade Sweet Pea's defense who made his best opponents missed their punches with his dodging and great movement in his prime. Not even the great Ortiz in prime would never touch Sweet Pea with his big punches unless Sweet Pea got a little careless leaving himself open that would not happen at anytime. Sweet Pea would counter him with his quick combos mostly from the outside to earn a decision. Also, Sweet Pea never lost by knock out in his prime until he was stopped in his final fight of his career, where Sweet Pea was already past his prime and done.

Re: Lightweights : Carlos Ortiz vs. Pernell Whitaker
This is a good one. More often than not, Whitaker would win this. Would go the distance and be competitive. Whitaker was an ATG, can't believe Benton would say this.
Re: Lightweights : Carlos Ortiz vs. Pernell Whitaker
April 13, 1997 New York Daily News: Benton said Ike Williams would murder Whitaker. I'm searching for the other interviews in which Benton said Whitaker wouldn't do well against past fighters.
Re: Lightweights : Carlos Ortiz vs. Pernell Whitaker
Correction: Benton said "Dont embarass me" when asked how Whitaker would do with Ike Williams. The "murder" comment wasn't in reference to Whitaker.
