Jimmy Ellis you could make an argument for either way for being a top opponent. He was 33 when he fought Shavers certainly not ancient but not that young either. He was riding a winning streak up until that point although against undistinguished opposition. Looked pretty well washed after the knockout loss. So it just depends on your point of view if you lend more credence to his winning streak prior to losing to Shavers or to his demise following the knockout loss.

Shavers beat Jimmy Young, Ken Norton, Henry Clark and Joe Bugner. These are impressive wins. He also floored Holmes and Lyle. This is certainly more impressive than anything Williams ever did.

Really this thread has gone way off the rails, its supposed to be about Bob Satterfield.... I've never said that Shavers wasnt a good fighter, but Williams had power comparable to Shavers... the fact that most of the top contenders of Williams era avoided fighting him speaks for itself!... this is a fact.
