I read that Shiels hit someone in a street fight and he never regained consciousness, he then quit boxing and turned to christianity. Not sure how true that is though?

Yes I think that’s what I read but I’ve heard other stories that Shiels just turned to god, not sure what is true

Davey Hunt chinning him is pretty much accepted as fact. Hunt's about 6'5" though, supposedly a decent boxer and a very nasty bloke. There's nothing 'plastic' about him. I wouldn't be surprised if Stretch didn't make the correct decision to 'stay down' in that instance.

I watched a Gary Stretch fight at York Hall on a cold January night in 1987. He stopped a fellow by the name of Winston Wray on cuts in two rounds and looked a great prospect at light-middleweight but seemingly threw it all away when he jumped up to middleweight for the shot at Chris Eubank. One more fight, a win over Steve Goodwin, and his career came to an end. The man was only 24.

Stretch was ahead on all the scorecards too before Eubank stopped him.

As has been said, he was a good prospect at LM.
Tall lad to stay in that division though.
