Not sure if i've told this o here before ,,, But years ago, i was running a couple of my own taxis ,, and got this fella in ,, he had just come out of the army ,I gave him his first job after he got out , we got on real well and spoke a lot ,, never having been in the army i was curious , asked a lot of questions , Anyway it turns out that he was some sort of PE teacher , he was in the commando's , parachute regiment or one of those up market soilder groups .. I asked him about the SAS , and remember he told me about another one which was a big secret at the time the SBS , ,, Told me he had tried to join the SAS on numerous occasions , and he also said , you virtually have to stand out and then get poached , you can't go knock on the door and ask to be let in ,,, ...... I said to him , i would of thought you would off been ok for that stuff ,especielly since he was doing a lot of PE work with them , and he said outright , i was'nt mentaly tough enough ... He reckons , its the mental side they look for ,, he was telling me , he seen 16 stone men go away and come back virtually un recognisable . big strong 6 foot plus 16 stone men , come back haggard weighing 8 stone

His words were ,, You have to be smart enough and intelligent enough to be a wizard with electronics , smart enough to be bilingul ,, BUT yet stupid enough , to leave camp fully fit , go cross the lake districts , in winter , live out there for a couple of weeks , and survive without being seen , armed with a pen knife and a mars bar ,, Then crazy enough to not think twice about slitting a throat , because your commander told you too without reason ..

And something else he said that always stuck with me was ,, if you EVER EVER see a tv show or read a book by anyone who claims to have been in these squadrons ,, you are looking at a liar.

I've not seen this show , but according to what this guy told me , there breaking a honor sort of system and rules by claiming to be SAS if in fact they have been there

Fash must be getting on a bit, but in his prime a real strong athlete, a hard man too, a self centred, tunnel visioned guy.

Well that last bit isn't true because those guys on the TV show are confirmed ex-special forces, as I've said one of them received a commendation for bravery in Northern Ireland and he also got an MBE for leading a hostage rescue operation. Steven Mitchell and Colin Armstrong AKA Andy McNab and Chris Ryan are confirmed ex-SAS, another one who wrote a book was Peter Ratcliffe who was the SAS RSM.

But the rest of your post yeah they want people they know aren't going to fall apart under pressure.

I always remember Vinnie Jones after being asked about his hard man image that he was a complete pussycat compared to Fash.

That was when I used to like footy , can you imagine today's premiership snowflakes standing up to the hardmen of that era and before ? .

"Apparently" if after you leave SF and you publicise the fact that you were in The Regiment whether that be righting books or appearing on shows. Then you are banned from any sort of reunion etc sine die

You are ostracised forever basically.

During my time in the forces I saw a quite a few go off and attempt selection, all bar one returned. Never heard off him again.. although I did leave the Army the following year. Often wonder what became of him....

Yeah I've heard that too although I've heard Peter Ratcliffe is still welcomed by the regiment although his book was more about pulling down the tall tales told by the likes of McNab, Ryan, Cameron Spence and Yorky Crossland, the latter two who were part of his mission in Iraq and neither of their books painted him in a positive light so this was Ratcliffe getting his own back. It's also notable that Ratcliffe published his book under his real name with his real face on the cover too, none of this pseudonyms with blanked out faces that the others did.
