Highest rated wins over teenagers

Post by margaret thatcher »

Jack Johnson gets his wins over Sam McVea rated well even though Sammy was only 17-19 at the time, I'm wondering what the best rated other wins over teenagers are

Genuinely curious, it's not a thread on JJ, just something that I noticed on his record that led me to wonder about other notable teenage wins. Any answers?

Tami mauriello lost when he was 18 to Billy Soose. He used his cousin's ID to get his license at 16 to start his pro career. Also lost to Gus Lesnovich and Jimmy Bivons before he turned 20.

Bob Montgomery over Wesley mouzon. Mouzon retired before he was 21, one of the bigger what ifs in boxing history.

You really can't let go getting schooled on Jack Johnson, can you?

The other week poor Maggie believed Johnson's record began with Tommy Burns. Over and over again in threads she said he only beat Burns, Jeffries, 'circus fighters' etc and complained about the lack of black fighters on his record. She didn't have a clue that he had cleaned up against black fighters, until I pointed it out to her. So now begins the process of diminishing the blacks he beat. 'Oh, he wasn't old enough! Oh, he wasn't fat enough! Oh, he only beat him 10 times - we needed to see what would happen in an 11th fight!'

Pathetic and cringeworthy.

lol read again. Someone else brought it up first that good black fighters never got their title shot, and I just responded to that, saying that those guys would've been tougher opponents than Burns and the guys who did challenge him. I never say at any point that he never fought these black fighters and I'm sure we agree that the black guys were better than most who he won and defended the title vs. It really wasn't that complicated but you ran around in circles and couldn't figure it out. Omg someone dare question JJ!!!

Maybe on your 6th or 7th account your reading skills will finally get there TJ :TU:

And thanks for the other responses actually answering the question bruhs, I guess it's hard to name many quality wins considering dudes at 17, 18, 19 usually aren't even close to their peaks. Man vs boy and all that, but I figure there gotta be some that stand out at least

Mando Ramos was hoping to become the youngest lightweight champ still in his teens, but Teo Cruz had a bit too much savvy for him in their first fight. Ramos won the rematch but was 20 by then. It was still a very good scalp for Cruz.

Danny Lopez knocked out Sean O'Grady when the latter was 17 or 18.

Young Stribling lost to Battling Budd and Dick Leonard when he was a teenager.

Len Harvey suffered a handful of losses when he was a teenager. Interesting, and horrifying, to note that he lost to Young Fern in January 1920...when Harvey was only twelve years old. But I suppose that's technically outside the parameters of this discussion.
