Dangerous Don Lee v Tony Sibson
I checked this out last night on the recommendation of the Great Fights thread.
This was a good scrap with Sibson starting stong and putting Lee down right at the end of the first. However, Lee came back strongly and put Sibson down three times in the third, although you never felt that he was too badly hurt.
Sibbo came back from the terrible third round to keep coming forward and keep the pressure on the pressure on and Harry Carpenter seemed to think he was ahead despite the three knockdowns.
The fight looked set to go the full 10 rounds but a dramatic 8th saw Sibbo put Lee over again before Lee came back and finished the Englishman off at towards the end of the 8th.
What I found astonishing is that Sibbo had a European title defence lined up a month later and there seemed to be no real reason why he would take this fight over in the States so soon before a tough defence in France. Harry Carpenter touched on this and said that should he lose to Don Lee, his agreed purse of £100k to defend the EBU belt would be reduced.
It's also quite amazing that he was able to fight Louis Acaries just over a month later as in the post fight interview, he had what looked to be a hell of a cut over his left eye. They don't make 'em as tough as Sibbo these days!

Wilfredo Gomez vs Royal Kobayashi
Gomez stops Kobayashi in the 3rd to retain his World Super Bantamweight title, one of the worst cases of reffing I've seen, Kobayashi started off well, took advantage of Gomez's tentative start, he got up close looked strong and was bullying Gomez on the inside, Gomez seemed to wake up as the 2nd round closed
Kobayashi came forward in the 3rd when a monster left hook dropped him face first like a rock, he just about made count but his legs were jelly, the ref waved it on and a Gomez cuffing right had Kobayashi over again, he dragged himself up, staggering all over when the ref again waved it on, Gomez landed a combo when Kobayashi collapsed again when it was eventually stopped

Hembrick vs Word.
Just the whole pre-fight routine in Hembrick's corner makes it worth the 6 minutes soup to nuts.

Riddick Bowe vs Pierre Coetzer
A good slugfest. Coetzer came to fight and had some success early, but Bowe was taking Pierre's shots well and, of course, Riddick always was a one to accept an offer for a fight, so he did. After a relatively close early rounds Bowe took over. After the 4th round Coetzer's face looked busted up with bruises and cuts. Pierre declined since then. His corner tried to gave him breaks with taping the gloves, he also had a break, after he got hit with a low blow, but nothing helped Coetzer to bounce back. At the end of the 7th Bowe hurt and wobbled Coetzer and the ref stepped in. The bout was an eliminator for the title fight against Holyfield.

Re: Classic fights I've watched recently
If Pierre had just had a 15 per cent more pop on his punches and maybe a tad more accuracy too...,he'd have bagged a big, signature win and maybe be on a par with Gerrie and Corrie.Riddick Bowe vs Pierre Coetzer
Coetzee just had the heavier/more hurtful shots.....and Sanders was a southpaw with quick hands that he let rip.
A very tough guy indeed….usually the 'away' opponent in his big-key fights and when you look back on stuff with Bowe and Bruno his physical conditioning and sheer willingness to work/carry the fight causes these blokes some discomfort.
I am pretty sure Pierre was the sort of opponent even the top men respected and no-corners were cut.

Re: Classic fights I've watched recently
Wilfredo Gomez vs Carlos Zarate
Gomez stops Zarate in 5 to retain his World Super Bantamweight title, cagey start, 2 unbeaten bangers, Gomez was just that bit more in control, measured the distance better on the back foot and nailed Zarate with some nice 1/2s, Zarate pressed but always fell short
Things exploded in the 4th when Gomez dropped Zarate with a left hook, Zarate got up but was wobbling, the bell went and Gomez put him down with a right, lucky not to get penalised
In the 5th Zarate was still reeling and Gomez came out like a madman, a combination had Zarate collapsed in the ropes, should've been ruled a KD but ref waved it on, Gomez had Zarate down again after 1 last attack and it was eventually stopped, Gomez brutal but he was lucky he had a lenient ref

Pierre Coetzer vs Jose Ribalta
There's a bit crooked version of this fight available on youtube, as ther're no full rounds #8 and #9. Still the general picture of the bout is clear. Coetzer started strong, took the early rounds, occasionaly hurting Ribalta. Jose bounced back a bit in the middle of the fight, but Pierre took over again later. In the 9th Ribalta knocked Coetzer down, while in the 10th and final round Coetzer ruturned a favor of a knockdown, thus he finished strong as well. A decent scrap, where Coetzer clearly won despite a solid counteraction from Ribalta.

Pierre Coetzer vs Jerry Halstead
Halstead started aggressively and even scored some noticeable shots in the 1st round, but afterwards Coetzer took control over the fight. Pierre was outboxing Halstead. Jerry fought a bit dirty with the excessive clinching, he was deducted a point for that in the 6th. In the 8th Coetzer dropped Halstead twice and one more time in the 9th. Eventually Halstead was able to last until the final bell and Pierre got a wide UD.

Re: Classic fights I've watched recently
Salvador Sanchez vs Wilfredo Gomez
Sanchez KOs Gomez in the 8th to retain his World Featherweight title, excellent battle Gomez brave as they come but Sanchez a level above, had Gomez down in the 1st from a left/right, Gomez looked unsteady when he got up and Sanchez dipped his knees with a right before the round was out
Gomez already had mountain to climb and Sanchez just picked him apart with the jab, Gomez couldn't close the gap, Sanchez snapped the jab in his face, worked the right hand over the top, nailed Gomez with big left hooks and worked Gomez over to the body, Gomez's eyes were swollen and in the 5th he gave it a good push pressuring Sanchez forcing him back, still Sanchez was too good, in the 8th when Gomez was having a decent spell with Sanchez in the corner, Sanchez spun himself out and trapped Gomez on the ropes and landed a bomb of a right hand which buckled his legs, a follow up 2 handed onslaught had Gomez down and through the ropes, he made the count just, but it was rightly waved off

I didn't think it was that close personally, had it 9-3 and thought Barrera won his rounds bigger. Naz won 4 rounds at most.

Riddick Bowe vs Art Card
The 12th Bowe's pro-bout. Card came to fight, he tried to hurt Bowe inside, but that was a big mistake. Bowe didn't even try to use his jab and range, he used his big size advantage inside and accepted the fight. At the end of the 2nd Riddick hurt Art with a right uppercut and a series of hooks. Early in the 3rd Bowe hurt Card with a left hook, then he added an overhand right, down went Card. Later in the round Bowe scored with heavy blows on several occasions. After the round Card's team stopped the fight.

Wilfredo Gomez vs Juan Laporte
Gomez beats Laporte by UD to become World Featherweight champion, great fight albeit a bit one sided as far as scores were concerned, the rounds were competitive but Gomez fought harder and was busier, Laporte didnt have the output to keep up with him Gomez got up close and worked away to the body, jabbed to set up the big right hand which brought him success
Laporte rocked Gomez in the 3rd with a big left hook but Gomez rode it out and never really looked troubled again, Laporte tried to muster up something late on but Gomez fought it out with him to become a 2 weight champ

Riddick Bowe vs Pinklon Thomas
The first big name in Bowe's resume, although Thomas was way past prime at that time. Bowe battered Thomas without any troubles through the fight. In the 7th and in the 8th Thomas was hurt badly, especially at the end of the 8th. After that round Thomas' corner stopped the fight.

Riddick Bowe vs Bert Cooper
Cooper started aggressive, he was breaking inside and trying to make it a fight there. In the first round Bowe was trying to counteract Cooper inside, but he wasn't much successful there. Bert took the 1st. In the 2nd Bowe changed tactics, he began to use his range, he kept Cooper out with jabs and picked power punches. Cooper was being outboxed and then Riddick scored with a hard one-two, Cooper was wobbled, Bowe added an overhand right, down went Cooper. Bert got up, but he didn't recover, Riddick unleashed the barrage of punches on Cooper and Cooper went down again right at the time of the bell. But he couldn't be saved by the bell, the ref gave him a count and stopped the fight even without ending the count, as Cooper looked dazed.

Riddick Bowe vs Tyrell Biggs
It was a good fight with the competetive beginning and lots of heavy blows. Bowe had a fast start, he landed some decent shots, but Biggs fought back and established the control with his jab. At first Bowe was outjabbed, but then he began to find the ways of getting to Biggs. At the end of the 3rd Biggs made another shift of momentum, as he managed to hurt Bowe a bit. Yet Riddick bounced back in the next round, since then he was controlling the fight. Tyrell had his moments too, but he was being outfought. In the 8th round Bowe landed a big overhand right, Biggs went down very hard and got up while being far from recovered. Bowe jumped on Biggs with the flurry and finished him.

Riddick Bowe vs Tony Tubbs
Bowe pushed the pace, Tubbs was fighting on the back foot. Both weren't much effective. Bowe was majorly outworking Tubbs. The 1st round was relatively evenful, Bowe did some solid inside work. In the 9th there was the single real exchange and Bowe looked a bit better in it. Overall, it was a tactical affair. Bowe was methodically outpointing slick and economical Tubbs. I scored only three rounds for Tony, Riddick secured a win comfortably.

Riddick Bowe vs Rodolfo Marin
The fight was a battle of the jabs. Bowe was outjabbing Marin in the 1st, while mixing it with some decent power punches. The same picture continued in the 2nd, until Riddick caught Marin with an overhand right, after what he added a couple of uppercuts. Marin went down and was counted out.

Riddick Bowe vs Philipp Brown
Bowe was signed to fight Ray Mercer on summer 1991, but Mercer injured his ankle, according to his manager. The fight was off, Bowe fought journeyman Philipp Brown instead. Riddick methodically broke Brown down in three rounds. Brown was hurt on several occasions through the fight and was down twice in the 3rd. After the fight, during post-fight ring interviews Bowe and Rock Newman had a heated word exchange with Mercer's manager Mark Roberts, where Newman even pushed Roberts. It's a pity, that such a great matchup eventually never took place.

Riddick Bowe vs Bruce Seldon
Bowe smashed Seldon right in the 1st, dropping him twice. It was clearly seen, that Seldon got hurt pretty badly, when he was sent to the canvas for the second time and was counted out. Still he probably recovered enough to rise. He failed to do it, but his trying to get up looked awkward. Maybe he was dazed so much, maybe he just surrendered and decided to take a dive.
