Chris Eubank Jr. Training With The Great Jones Jr.

Post by Ruthless-RKO »

Boxing legend Roy Jones Jr. is currently training British world title contender Chris Eubank Jr. Out in Florida, observing the lock-down demands many of us are currently living under, Eubank Jr. is learning plenty from the all-time great as he trains with Jones Jr. in his boxing gym, and the middleweight/super-middleweight is looking forward to returning to the ring once the coronavirus battle has been won.

Eubank Snr will still be very much a prominent figure in his son’s corner, so it will be two ultra-experienced heads in Junior’s corner when he is able to resume his career.

“I met Roy at a fight show in February, where we started talking. I liked his vibe and the advice he gave me,” Eubank Jr. told Sun Sport. “Soon after I asked my father to contact Roy to see if it was possible to train with him, now I’m here. Roy is most definitely complex. From the way he trains and teaches you to replicate footwork, speed, and precision power, there’s no-one like it. This is what makes his style. If those are not the attributes that one desires to possess then it would be extremely hard to work with Roy nor would there be any point in working with him. Just as my father was not for everybody, nor am I for everybody and Roy is most definitely not for everybody, so this makes for a perfect union. Learning from the best is all the motivation I need. Roy has been putting me through my paces and working me like a dog.”

Last time I saw Roy as a trainer, his fighter lost to a guy who looked a lot less talented and a lot sloppier. That was Kev Newman vs Genc Pllana

Fighters don't always make good trainers. Some trainers with no real boxing pedigree make great trainers. I can't see Eubank JR making any huge changes.

Roy Jones Jr. at 51 still FASTER than Chris Eubank Jr

Roy Jones Jr. at 51-years-old is looking faster than his student Chris Eubank Jr. in them training together. The 30-year-old Eubank Jr. (29-2, 22 KOs) posted a video clip on social media on Monday showing him and the former four-division world champion Jones (66-9, 47 KOs) working out on a bag.

The difference hand speed between Jones and Eubank Jr. is vast. Jones, who looks like he’s carrying around some excess weight, is A LOT faster in terms of hand speed than Eubank Jr.

Jones is an exceptional talent, and Eubank Jr. can only hope that he can improve enough to do some of the things that he did. At 30, Eubank Jr. can’t afford to take his time. He’s in the prime of his career, and he’s got to learn fast if he wants to capture a world title. Though technically, Eubank Jr. is a world champion with the interim WBA 160-lb strap, it’s not the full belt.

Jones has the speed of a younger fighter

There’s nothing wrong with that. Eubank Jr. is lucky that he has a trainer with Jones’ speed, athleticism, and experience. A lot of fighters have trainers that can’t do the things that Jones is still capable of doing at 51.

During Jones’ best years, he beat Bernard Hopkins, James Toney, Vinny Pazienza, and Thomas Tate. At 160, Jones was too fast and almost impossible to hit.

Chris Eubank Jr. NOT showing improvement with trainer Roy Jones Jr.

Chris Eubank Jr. posted a video of himself sparring this week on social media, and he’s not showing any indication of having improved his game with new trainer Roy Jones Jr.

The 30-year-old Eubank Jr. (29-2, 22 KOs) recently added Jones to his team to help him develop, but he’s thus far now showing signs of raising his game to another level.

At this early point of Eubank’s working relationship with Jones, he doesn’t appear to be catching on to the things that he’s attempting to teach him. He’s fighting nothing like Jones, and he’s getting too often. Jones didn’t get hit the way Eubank Jr. is during the prime of his career. Eubank Jr. is in his prime right now, and he’s too easy to catch.

Trainer Roy Jones is trying to help Chris Jr.

During the sparring clip, Eubank Jr failed to use his jab, and he is rushing in and getting caught repeatedly by his smaller sparring partner. Like always, Eunank Jr. threw repeated uppercuts, which is fine.

During one portion of the sparring session, Eubank Jr. appeared to be hurt after taking a shot on the top of his head. Eubank left himself open for his opponent to hit on the top of the head with the way he was bent over.

Eubank Jr has a great uppercut, but he needs work on is his outside game. He doesn’t use his jab, and he’s ineffective when he’s on the outside.

In Eubank’s two career defeats against Billy Joe Saunders and George Groves, they were able to box him on the outside, and build-up commanding leads in the first half of the fights. Eubank Jr. came back in the second half of the matches, but he failed to do enough to make up for poor starts.

Jones Jr. needs a different strategy

The things that Roy is trying to teach Eubank Jr. on how to box, he’s not showing signs of being able to grasp them. Roy may need to try a different approach to impress upon Eubank Jr. that he needs to stop slugging and focus more on staying on the outside.

What makes it even more critical for Eubank Jr. to learn to box is because he’s got ambitions of wanting to take on Canelo Alvarez, Gennadiy Golovkin and Jermall Charlo.

Those are fighters with much more power than him, and they’ll take him apart if he tries to brawl on the inside with them. Golovkin isn’t great inside fighter, but he won’t need to be. Eubank Jr. is there to be hit when he comes forward.

The lockdown with boxing could help Eubank Jr. because it’ll give him more time to work with Roy Jones.

Fighting the way Eubank does, he can beat some of the fighters in the 160-pound weight class, but the elite guys. It’s probable that Eubank Jr. would lose to virtually all of the top five in the middleweight division right now. That’s why it’s important that Eubank begins to follow Jone’s instructions because he looks unchanged from the fighter he was before he joined up with him.

Being a fighter and being a trainer are two completely separate skills.

Its rare to be great at one, even rarer to be great at both.

But Eubank has struggled to respect trainers in the past, if he doesn't respect Roy Jones then no one can advise him.

Who is the most talented fighter to have made a great trainer?

Georgie Benton must be up there.

Wasn't Eddie Futch a decent ama? He had some sort of health condition that stopped him turning pro.

Suppose it's open to interpretation but Kevin Rooney had good results as a trainer (albeit he is probably best known for being almost decapitated by Arguello as a pro but there's no shame in that and he was severely weight drained).

McGirt was a good pro until torn rotator cuff more or less ended his career.

Freddie (Roach) was a decent pro, can't argue with his results as a trainer.

It's interesting that guys like Roach and Rooney were probably not fighters that people were expecting to make good trainers.

Whereas others, like Mike Macullum for instance (very smart, technical fighter, learned off both Futch and Steward), don't see big success as a trainer.

I know Roach stayed as an assistant to Futch for a long time, which must make a big difference (i.e. learning without having to be in charge straight from the off)

Be interesting to see how Floyd gets on.

Yeah, you'd think McCallum would be an amazing trainer, offering technical insight etc. I mean, he more than likely does but other than maybe Jesse Vargas I'm struggling to think of a name fighter. I know he was linked to the later days of post-prison Tyson but not entirely sure what technical input he'd ever have had.

Remember when Whittaker had Judah doing knee dips for a fight or two?

Eddie Mustapha Muhammad is another of those very good pros who had a more than decent career as a trainer.

I know Gil Clancy was more than "just" a trainer but the list of name guys/talent he worked with was ridiculous. That said, rambling OT here because I don't even know if he boxed. I remember him coming out of retirement to train/coach Oscar.

Roy has still got hand speed its his legs that are gone. Jones is a smart guy who Eubank will respect as such he has a good chance of helping him.

Boxed amateur in the forces, according to his obituary, though no mention he boxed pro.

Cheers. He always seemed a switched on guy, particularly when you listen to him commentating. Well, compared to some of the others. I never knew much about him outside of commentary/training/management.

Jones had his own freaky idiosyncratic style. I can't see what technical skills he could impart

Yep. Jones has trained a few people now, and he's never really helped.

He's a legendary fighter, but he achieved what he did because of his natural gifts more than his learned skill. Not that he didn't learn anything, obviously he did, but most guys wouldn't be able to get away with trying to fight like Roy Jones.

Just like so many Ali imitators tried and failed to imitate Ali. Some guys are special enough that they can break the rules. Most guys aren't.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. had a lot of gifts and that extra special type of athleticism too. The difference beween him and Roy is he also developed his technique and craft to go with it, so that once his reflexes and his speed started to leave him as he aged, he still had something to fall back on.

I think it has now become one of the biggest myths in boxing that Roy just got by on athleticism and speed. He had tremendous IQ and skills.

Emmanuel Steward was a cracking amateur. 94-3 and won National Golden Gloves at bantamweight.

Struggling to think of a top class pro.
