Had no idea about his addiction. Glad to hear he is recovering. Very good read, this.

Yep, good on him for fronting up and facing his problem head on. He's always good to watch, I wish him well.

Much as i understand where you are coming from I cant agree.

Pubs are not held accountable because of alcoholics, Costa coffee for those with a coffee addiction. Plenty of Fish for people who like to F**K around? Porn sites for people who masturbate a lot?

Its no one elses fault but the individuals and/or their circumstances?

We all like a little flutter on the national, we like a shag, a beer or a bit of 'frankie vaughn'. but its about self control and doing things in moderation.

Those examples are not as unscrupulous as bookies. if you win money consistently, bookies will limit you and close your account. They encourage losers and problem gamblers while restricting winners. They never advertise this though.

You may be right. Unfortunately I‘ve never had that experience ... at least not yet. Hmmm

Fair play to him for doing a year. I’ve struggled with gambling addiction for years. I waxed £1100 (mega money for me) in first two days of Cheltenham this year. Not had a bet since then and have felt content since they stopped all the live sport. Hoping I don’t go back to it when sports resumes but might need that app that blocks gambling sites on your phone. It’s so easy to have a bet these days. Know young lads doing themselves in over it after blowing in wages/running up big debts etc. Hope Cheeseman stays strong.

There is only one rule in gambling and it is that if you win too much long term then the bookie will restrict you. You are banned from being a long term winner and have to be creative in how you get bets on. Theres always a way.

But other than that there are no rules. We are used to rules in every aspect of our lives. You go to work, you have rules on how you have to behave. You go out in public you have rules by the law. You have bills that you have to pay. And so on. But when you gamble there are no rules, only the rules you set for yourself. Guys working as traders for big companies have strict rules about how much they can trade with and what they have to do if they lose etc. If they break these rules they know they'll get the sack. Gamblers literally have nobody to stop them other than themselves and that is what causes almost everyone to lose. If you are placing bets you know you shouldn't be placing, there is no rule against that. You are allowed to do yourself in and lose everything and your mind is working against you in many ways because it's natural to chase lost money but what most people don't realize is that you're not allowed to win long term. It's a mugs game. The high street bookies have rents and wages to pay and they are coming out of the pockets of every gambler that comes into the shop. Online gambling has ruined many a life. This is a serious problem.
