Pele Reid springs to mind. There was a young lad who had to quit 2-3 years ago with an eye problem, can’t think of his name, he was being touted as something special until a journeyman beat him. His nickname was something like gorgeous or handsome, something like that

No he was white lad from a lighter division, think he’s was from north London, only had a handful of fights before having to quit. He wasn’t being touted as a world beater but they always seemed to make a fuss when he fought like he was gonna go places.

EDIT: I remember now it was Georgie Kean, only a novice pro fighter but lost to a 11-60-3 fighter, won a few more then got stopped early and quit soon after. I think he was a bit of an amateur star.

It’s a good series of programmes - although the losers title is a bit misleading and disrespectful

There was a fair bit of hype around anyone from the Ingle gym in the Naz era, and Pele Reid got more than his share. Looking back, his win over Wayne Llewellyn was decent (Llewellyn had a pretty unbeaten record) but he wasn't ready for someone as experienced as Francis. In the fight before that, Reid had been hurt and floored by an obscure African fighter, but that got glossed over with clips of him doing kickboxing poses in his Brazilian style ribbon shorts.

The ultimate 90s Ingle hype job was that 17 year old who was going to be "bigger than Naz" etc. He fought over in South Africa (couldn't turn pro here as not 18), live on Sky Sports (undercard of something that escapes me). He drew his only fight against a 1-0 opponent, resplendent in a leopard skin nappy. Never seen nor heard again.

Yep Khalid Shafiq. He was on the undercard of the Harry Simon vs Winky Wright title fight. I think he got into bother outside the ring and went down a different path.

I agree, in fact I think I once said on here around 2011 that Fury would get splattered the moment he stepped in with any boxer who was remotely world class.

I remember Chris Okoh was getting the big build up from Sky, even giving him some reporting gigs, then he started not doing so well and it seemed that the sky team turned on him in tone.

I remember Barry Hearn saying Herbie Hide was going to be the greatest heavyweight who ever lived in an post fight interview, maybe he'd been on the Chablis, but it didn't quite work out.
