Favourite overseas European title wins

I still consider the EBU title a prestigious championship and has produced some great nights over the years.

What are your favourite overseas wins for this title ? I think it's one of those that more and more boxers will pop up in your memory as the days go by.

The first two to spring to mind is for the same title, at Lightweight :

Also the Jason Cook one was equally spectacular, he was caught and hurt backed against the ropes and then pulled out a left hook to knock Casamonica out cold.

Weren't EBU fights but Danny Williams knocking the shite out of Oleg Platov was good - Platov when those Swiss arseholes saved him from getting KO'd making out he wanted trouble after the final bell - yeah, right - Danny Williams spent four rounds properly knocking the shite out of him.

Tony Sibson going over to France and taking a split decison over Louis Acaries to win back his European Middleweight crown. This was just over a month after he had been stopped by Dangerous Don Lee in Atlantic City.

Kevin Finnegan scored a memorable win over Gratien Tonna in France in 1980 for the European middleweight title. Tonna had beaten him years earlier for the same title but Finnegan, who also lost three times to Alan Minter and was considered well past his best, found the reserves to lick Tony Sibson and the Tonna back-to-back.

That Williams one I’m sure saw some hilarious officiating again (along with his fight on that Turkish promoters bill.) In my head I’ve got a vision of Danny whacking Platov and Platov turning away and going down to one knee and the ref just standing there as much as to say ‘ohhhh he’s hurt we have to pause the fight to give him time to recover’ rathe than counting a knockdown like he was meant to do.

One I would like to see, which I never have is Henry Cooper knocking over the Italian 'Axeman' Piero Tomasoni in Rome. Read a few accounts of this fight and would love to see for myself.

The Italian kept whacking Cooper low with the referee taking little notice and in the end, after a few knockdowns Cooper finished him off in the 5th. Then the crowd went nuts and apparently Sean Connery, Stanley Baker and Michael Winner amongst others in the crowd had to take cover.
