Ok - a few days ago a cruiserweight named David Alexis was scheduled to make his pro debut. He came in at 190, apparently his opponent came in under the 175 limit so the fight was cancelled.
Alexis was awarded a walkover by PABA (WBA) director Alan Kim.
A walkover means A WIN.
PABA is the sanctioning body for the fights - Singapore does not have a boxing commission as of yet.
PABA is actually giving the guy who made weight a victory.
Sorry but who is PABA to determine this? They're simply a sanctioning body and it's BoxRec's or Fight Fax's decision to add or not add the fight.
Isn't a walkover only in the amateurs?
How can a fighter be awarded a decision if he didn't fight and his opponent didn't even set foot in the ring?!
To me it sounds like the fight shouldn't even be recorded. If you don't fight, there's not fight. If this were the case Diego Corrales would have a victory on his ledger because of Castillo's inability to make weight.
Thoughts please...
PABA BS
Agreed! Can you imagine how many boxers would obtain more victories by way of walkover wins. Just think about all of those debuting boxers whom Julio Cesar Chavez defeated in his first 30 fights, those cab drivers couldn't have cared less if he got the win as most of them never fought again, and a walkover would have certainly been a better option for them. The opponent doesn't get paid, but on the flip side the opposition wouldn't have to suffer a beating due to not being prepared to fight.
This is boxing and someone could possibly get seriously injured. I have always preferred a boxer pull out of a bout last minute, than to be forced to fight. If a boxer feels that he shouldn't fight, then he obviously has almost no chance of winning, but a good chance at suffering injury. The PABA obviously knows nothing about the sport, but I am sure that they are experts in understanding Sanctioning fees which are paid to them.
