Fighters that shouldn't have been in Title fights

Post by zuru »

Maybe Im wrong but off my head:

Caveman Lee vs Hagler

Leroy Jones vs Holmes

Dave Tiberi vs Toney

Scott Frank vs Holmes

Marvis Frazier vs Holmes

(Wait why's so many Holmes fights? Oh yeah the last 2,bum of the month tour)

None of these guys deserved a Title shot even though according to many Tiberi won.But based on the prefights they hadn't earned it.

Didn't Tiberi run Toney particularly close? May have been lucky to get a shot in the first place but proved he deserved his shot on the night

Baez is a good one. Had to have trouble getting someone to fight Tommy. Leonard fought kalule on that card.

Dart, actually the Gomez v Ndukwu fight was a non-title. Eddie never actually did fight for a world title. I see Mike Quarry was mentioned by someone else here, but Mike deserved his shot. The outcome, of course, was something different. I have also seen some fighters like Cuevas, who has been mentioned, and Jorge Lujan, who both didn't deserve title shots, but after they won they carved a good championship reign for themselves. I looked at this whole subject matter as - whether they won or not, did they deserve that initial title try?

I believe Manuel Ortiz had several soft title defenses.

Good call, I thought it was a title fight but Gomez came in over the weight and they scrapped the title part the day of the fight. Agree about Quarry too,

Tyrell Biggs with only 17 fights as a professional, challenged the monster "Iron" Mike Tyson. Gosh! He almost got murdered in only 7 rounds!

I think that Biggs should have had more fights and experience before challenging for a world championship.

Rafael Lovera. Challenging for a world title in your first fight is a dangerous idea.

Was just going to post about Mike Quarry. He did earn his shot and had some decent fights against top LHW's after losing to Foster, although mostly decision losses, but to top fighters. Lopez; Fourie; Bogs; etc.

Morrade Hakkar against Bernard Hopkins was pretty damn embarrassing.

There's quite a few guys that have gotten title shots based on being undefeated, but had never beaten a noteworthy contender to deserve serious contender status.

Pete Frissina against Rafael Marquez is one such example

I'm sure there's several of those types.
