Who had better head movement than James Toney?

Post by lazboy »

Reel them off but know this! Toney didn’t even start boxing until after his teenage years. Clearly a natural athlete. Unheard of. What a star.

Locche.

That's a good shout; he does tend to get forgotten, but he really had a phenomenal defence.

Dam I was under the impression Toney started boxing later in life. 10s still relatively young.

I think he quit boxing for a while in his teenage years and then came back to it, hence why so few amateur fights (around 30) despite starting at 10

Yea I’m not convinced. I thought he was more fleet footed than slippery on the inside. I know there was that one clip of Jones with his hands behind his back and no doubt he had good head movement, I just don’t think it was exceptional like Toney and others mentioned,

Mike McCallum was very sound defensively, as was Roberto Duran. Dwight Qawi also had very good head movement.

Willie Pep certainly at or near top of the list, Duran was exceptional as well, SRR and SRL of course, prime Rigo, and honorable mention to Chris Byrd who was always fighting guys much bigger but more than held his own due to his cat like defense. Toney was about as natural as they get. Very tough to get in a clean shot even when he was out of shape. He beat a tough Iran Barkley with ease. Holy said Toney was the most complete fighter he ever fought.

Willie Pep is #1 all time. Legend has it he won a round without landing a punch cuz put on an amazing head movement/foot work display.

Dwight Qawi was great at head movement. Same with Joe Frazier.

Ali and Roy Jones had great head movement, but even better footwork.

Wilfred Benitez. Sweet Pea. A young Mike Tyson (head movement diminished later in his career tho). Sugar Ray (both).
