Top trainers who never boxed
Top trainers who never boxed
I believe Joe Goosen is one example, though he says he was a sparring partner for Randy Shields. Any others who didn't have any amateur or pro bouts ?

I wouldn't call Ben Davison a top trainer but he trained a top guy fury. I never heard of Davidson having fought? Also did E Stewart's nephew who's training fury previously fight?
Re: Top trainers who never boxed
Angelo Dundee, I think.

I don't think futch or Clancy were fighters.
Re: Top trainers who never boxed
Futch was a terrific amateur and Clancy boxed in the military.I'm talking guys with no amateur or pro bouts.

I don’t think Enzo boxed.

Does barney Eastwood count? Ran a club with John Breen
Re: Top trainers who never boxed
Dundee as mentioned. Lou Duva? Couldn't see him as much of a boxer.
Re: Top trainers who never boxed
Duva had a brief pro career and Dundee had a few amateur bouts in the service. I started this thread because Buddy McGirt said only a former boxer can be a good trainer.
Re: Top trainers who never boxed
He wasn’t a trainer though, he was on the business side.
Re: Top trainers who never boxed
He probably meant, someone who boxed pro. I don’t see a few amateur fights making much difference.
Re: Top trainers who never boxed
But can a man who has never boxed teach someone how to box ?
Re: Top trainers who never boxed
I think it would help. Even sparring. Certainly a great trainer could have been a not very good boxer though.
Re: Top trainers who never boxed
I wouldn’t have thought so but the evidence appears to suggest otherwise. I‘m sure, for example, Enzo didn’t box. Dundee, a top trainer, had a few amateur fights. He must have gained his skills outside the ropes.
Re: Top trainers who never boxed
Having a take charge personality may be even more important. Even when you listen to the great trainers, their advice usually isn't rocket science. "Let your hands go." "Take a deep breath, just relax."
Psychologically, a fighter wants a trainer with a hands on boxing background. It's like you don't want a financial advisor who is poor or nutritional advisor who is fat. The advice may be good, but it's human nature to ask, what have you done?

Re: Top trainers who never boxed
Teaching anybody anything is a mysterious business.
Experience strongly suggests it's best done as early as possible.
Apart from tightening up defences as Klitschko and Lewis did under Steward, there doesn't seem to be much more possible for a fully developed boxer to learn. Even then, it must have took a considerable effort on the parts of Wladimir and Lennox to make those necessary stylistic adjustments. We saw Joshua make an adjustment recently, but will Wilder be able to do the same?
If we could figure out how teaching really works, ie how to motivate, how to focus concentration, how to make the knowledge stick etc, then it would be easy to maximise everyone's talent.
But it isn't. Even worse it's a two sided process, the coach is often learning as much as his fighter. As Tony1244 said there's often also a symbiotic relationship involved with respect necessary on both sides.
Still doesn't answer the question of whether the trainer needs to have boxed - I don't think so. I suspect what's more important is a deep understanding of people, boxing, and training methods.
Step forward Angelo Dundee, Cus D'Amato..

Arcel said he had about 8 bouts.
Re: Top trainers who never boxed
Lou Korica trained Stravco Micevic from scratch to Aust Light Heavy Title. He also had two rippa amateurs Aaron and Damien Oates
