Emanuel Navarrete was relatively unknown before dominating the much-touted Isaac Dogboe on two occasions, now looking like arguably the man to beat at super bantamweight (Vargas and Akhmadaliev are good too).

Eugenio Monteiro. Lost to Thomas Mcdonagh, then reeled off wins against Gilbert Eastman, Takaloo and Anthony Farnell.

Rendall Munroe beating Martinez was a big shock. The Boxing Bin Man was about 6/1 with the bookies as I remember. Am sure Flexen called it in the Boxing News. Rendall was about 13-1 at the time and put a fine run together after this. Kiko’s first defeat too.

They shafted the brilliant Korean in that one. Navarette was in big trouble in the fifth round and then dropped. The bell rang as soon as Navarette scrambled to his feet and clearly rang early. Navarette came back to win but the Korean got another shot as a result of the controversy. This time he took on Rafael "Bazooka" Limon, who had beaten Navarette. He hammered Limon mercilessly for seven rounds and was miles ahead on the cards when Limon threw a big shot to the body and down and out went the challenger. The Korean, who threw beautiful straight shots, never fought again and he was only 24.

Remember it well on a beautiful summer night in Italy in 1981. Southpaw Navarette was a late substitute for the injured Bazooka Limon but proved a revelation in the early minutes as he crashed home vicious hooks from both hands. However, Boza suddenly came to life in the third and really hurt the challenger with a right hook but heads then clashed and Boza picked up a bad cut over the left eye. That cost Boza the world title. They couldn't stop the bleeding and the blood was running into Boza's eye and he couldn't see Navarette's right hooks coming. Navarette finished the job with a big right hook in the fifth.

Great shout NoScoutingReport :salut:

I'd never heard of Emanuel Navarette prior to him challenging Isaac Dogboe and he turned out looking like one of those great Mexican threshing machines they seem to endlessly churn out.

Dogboe had been on a terrific run of form and the B0x nati0n team got totally caught up in the merriment. Unfortunately for Isaac, Naverrete was on an even better run of form and beat him black & blue from start to finish.

Time will tell, but Dogboe's team might have shown the boxing world the perfect blueprint in how to ruin a good fighter. Their man takes an horrendous beating against a clearly superior fighter...I know, let's allow it to happen all over again in his very next fight :maybe:

As for Naverrete he seems to be mowing down everyone in his path and I hope he gets some well deserved high profile fights :box:

Cruz over McGuigan. This was supposed to be the softer option to introduce McGuigan to his Irish/American
fans. Cruz was a late replacement and if i remember rightly was still part time in the building game. He'd a decent
amateur career but he was unknown on these shores. McG was something like 1/8 jolly and i know a few lads at work
who went big on a stoppage. Barry should have listened to Mr Eastwood.

The beating they allowed him to take in the 2nd fight was criminal!

Should of been stopped rounds earlier.

Cruz was indeed a late replacement and the boxing Gods were shining on the local man because he actually lived in Las Vegas and the desert heat suited his patient, clever, counter-punching style. McGuigan, who never paced himself in the ring, was offered three opponents once Argentina's Fernando Sosa dropped out with serious eye problems: Cruz, Antonio Rivera or Jose Marmolejo.
McGuigan chose Cruz because he felt that Cruz was the safest opponent (for safe, read non-punching). He knew all about Rivera, who was dangerous but had a stamina problem, and all about Marmolejo, a Panamanian who had roughed him up in sparring in Belfast, so he was out. Rivera should have been the choice. The Puerto Rican suffered from asthma (an asthma attack later sadly killed him) and ran out of steam after a few threatening rounds. McGuigan had a decent chin and would have thrown too many punches for Rivera and outlasted him but he probably felt he would get to Cruz in the early rounds. He was wrong.

On the domestic end of the scale and back on the Friday fight nights but the South African - Tshifhiwa Munyai came out of nowhere to take a couple of Brits undefeated records.

Jose Seys and Charlie Boston - both stopped Errol Christie and then Bomber Graham came in and battered them both.

Seys was as rough as a sack of broken bricks (he stopped Jimmy Price in a round too except he didn't now I am looking at his record   ) but he could punch and he was really a light heavyweight - I don't know why they matched up Christie with him  Same with Boston - who was a big, gangly - he fought at light heavyweight but would be a super middleweight today.

Juan Veloz was a Puerto Rican who wasn't even known to Puerto Ricans. He was 8-4-2 with 2 kos when he challenged Antonio Rivera, 14-3, for the Puerto Rican Super Bantamweight title, and knocked him out in eleven rounds. Rivera of course later had an excellent career, including being world Featherweight (IBF) champion. Veloz retired at 10-6-2 with 4 kos.
