Johnny Famechon vs Fighting Harada 1+2
Famechon gets off the canvas 3 times to beat Harada by UD to retain his World Featherweight title, excellent fight, good clash of styles, Famechon the boxer and Harada the fighter, Harada unfortunate not to get the verdict and become a 3 weight world champ, Famechon boxed on the back foot, flicked out the jab and used the ring to good effect, Harada was aggressive as ever , marched forward, worked the body and looked for the big right hand over the top
Harada had Famechon down in the 2nd from the right hand then Famechon returned the favour in the 5th doubling up the left hook to deck Harada, in the 11th Harada had Famechon down again with the same shot as first time, the big right and in the 14th Famechon was down a 3rd time from the same shot and that was the one that hurt him most, he got up on groggy legs but the bell went to save him and he fiddled his way through the last round to make it to the end and keep his belt
Famechon TKOs Harada in the 14th round of the rematch to retain his title, exciting end to the fight but for the most part there wasnt much quality from either man, Famechon boxed on the back foot again and Harada tried to jab his way in close to work the body and that overhand right but neither man landed much for first 8/9 rounds and it was a bit ragged
In the 10th Harada put Famechon down with that same right that scored 3 knockdowns in the 1st fight but Famechon got right back up to keep fighting, as the ref tried to break it up Harada's cornerman stormed the ring, I assume to claim KD but then ref got them free and called action, Harada unlucky not to score the KD but also lucky not to be DQ'd
Famechon put Harada down in the 12th from a left hook which was his first real success in the fight then had him down again after a series of punches at the end of the 13th, this time Harada was hurt and he was still unsteady coming out for the 14th, a barrage from Famechon had the ref stepping in to give Harada a standing 8 count then after Famechon laid into Harada sending him crashing through the ropes , Harada just about made it back in the ring and to his feet but he was gone and it was stopped

Ricky Hatton vs Giuseppe Lauri
Hatton stops Lauri in the 5th of a non title Super Lightweight fight, Lauri tried his best and landed the occasional right hand but Hatton was too strong and relentless and it got too much for Lauri who in the end couldn't keep him off, Hatton got up close banged to the body, uppercut through the middle and just bullied Lauri into defeat
Although Hatton always looked the better man it wasnt until the 5th that Lauri began to wilt, Hatton turned it up a notch and battered Lauri up close and you seen him beaten, bullied on the ropes he broke free but Hatton nailed him with 3 left hooks and ref jumped in,the body work of Hatton taking its toll

Ricky Hatton vs Jon Thaxton
Hatton outpoints Thaxton over 12 rounds to become British Super Lightweight champ, excellent domestic tussle, disastrous start for Hatton who was cut seconds into the fight after a head clash, bad cut which could've easily stopped the fight but credit to his cutsman who stemmed the flow, Hatton to his credit kept him composure as Thaxton targeted the left eye with right hooks early on
Hatton soon took over though and Thaxton spent the rest of the fight trying to keep Hatton off, Hatton got up close bullied him, sunk in lefts to the body and drilled uppercuts through the middle, Thaxton took his lumps and earned his dough, several times it looked as if Thaxton was ready to go but he showed incredible bravery and toughness, he was never in the fight really but Hatton was made to work for the win and he looked great in doing so, great learning fight for Hatton

SRL- Hagler.
Such a good fight. I usually score it 115-113 SRL but had it 114-114 this time.
Leonard shows so much heart. 1 fight in 5 years and he produces a performance like this. Incredible.
The bolo punch in the 4th is one of my favourite punches of all time.
Hagler wins this if its over 15 rounds. Also I’m still puzzled as to why he started off boxing orthodox. It didn’t work and gave SRL a headstart on the cards.
The 118-110 card is atrocious.

Ricky Hatton vs Eamonn Magee
Hatton beats Magee by UD in a non title Super Lightweight scrap, another great learning fight for Hatton who got dropped in the 1st after getting tagged from a Magee right hook, he didnt look hurt but got rocked in the 2nd and had to hold on, Hatton was reckless early on but settled into things putting educated pressure on Magee, targeting the body to break him down
Magee spent too much of the fight in the corner and although he caught the rushing Hatton with some cute counters and was able to hold his own in close quarters, really he was out worked by Hatton for the majority of the fight and there was no doubt Hatton was the clear winner after the nightmare start

Ricky Hatton vs Vince Phillips
Hatton pounds out a wide UD over 12 in a non title Super Lightweight fight, long hard night for Phillips who showed mad toughness and durability to hang around for the distance, he tried to keep Hatton at bay with the jab and movement but Hatton too strong and just bullied him for the whole fight, battered the body, drove the uppercuts through the guard and nailed Phillips with leaping left hooks
Phillips had to use all his savvy to last the course but he was outboxed, outfought and out worked all night, Hatton was at his best, incredible engine and round 1 was same as round 12

Re: Classic fights I've watched recently
Thaxton was just right for Hatton's education at that juncture in the sense that he was a notch up - had enough tools to make Ricky think about his own safety - and Jon was definitely not the type to fold or ever stop trying to turn the tide.Ricky Hatton vs Jon Thaxton
I looked up his record post-Hatton and it would be fair to say that the fight probably did Jon some good too....some of his best wins were still ahead of him and he got plenty out of being in with Hatton himself.
Re: Classic fights I've watched recently
Sugar Ray Leonard v Donny Lalonde
Ray was very slow out of the blocks against the much bigger man and easily lost the first four rounds, with a 10-8 for Lalonde in the fourth after he put Leonard down. However, that trip to the canvas woke Ray up and he started taking over from the fifth onwards. Lalonde still had some success and rocked Leonard shortly before he succumbed to a brutal finish from the smaller man after some relentless pressure.
Looking at the scorecards at the finish made you realise that Lalonde needed a knockout to win. Leonard looked sluggish early on and a more skilful boxer might have had more success than Lalonde who looked a little wild at times.
It was a good effort from the Canadian but class told in the end and the finish was ruthless.

Perez nailed Sanchez in round seven with a good right hand, but Wilfredo Gomez did exactly the same in Sanchez's next bout with the same result..so if WG could not do it, neither would NP.
Sanchez clearly dominated a dogged opponent.

Virgil Hill vs Bobby Czyz
Hill beats Czyz by UD to retain his World Light Heavyweight title, if ever there was a fight won on the jab it was this one, Hill probably threw between 40/50 right hands all night and I'm being generous, both men used same tactics all night, Hill on the back foot popping out the hab with great effect and Czyz walking forward trying to get his bombs off
Czyz was quicker out the blocks and had success early in roughing the back peddling Hill up, he had Hill down in the 3rd from a left hook/right hand but somehow ref ruled slip although it was as clear as day it was a knockdown, after that Hill picked and poked away with the jab while Czyz marched on but struggled to close the gap to get his punches off and Hill pretty much coasted to the end on his bike, jab was 1st class but could've mixed it up more

Virgil Hill vs Frank Tate 1
Hill beats Tate by UD to win vacant World Light Heavyweight champion, dreadful fight barely any punches landed by either man apart from jabs and the occasional hooks, the back hands from both men were nonexistent, the decision was wide in Hill's favour but that was probably only because he was pressing all night and looked like he was controlling things, as far as punches landed and missed, there cant have been a lot between them
The only drama in the fight came in the 11th when it looked like Tate dropped Hill with a peach of a right uppercut, Hill's legs dipped and it looked like he touched down or was about to but he sprang up and Tate had already began to walk away missing the chance to follow up, replays didnt show if Hill's glove touched the canvas, apart from that the fight was shite, both were 84 Olympic teammates which might explain the poor effort from both men or maybe both were too similar in styles, tall upright conventional jabber/ counter punches
Hill beat Tate by decision in a rematch but it's not on YouTube

Hearns-Andries
Hearns is a class above pretty much throughout.
It’s a really entertaining fight.
Andries gets battered in the 6th. Down officially 3 times but he touched canvas 5 times in the round.
Andries showed great heart but the ref or corner should of stopped it in this round.
Hearns is really impressive. His right hand is a thing of beauty.

Virgil Hill vs Henry Maske 1+2
Hill beats Maske by close SD to unify the Light Heavyweight division, deserved win for Hill, should've been unanimous he was by far the better boxer, busier and landed more punches, Maske was too passive and although he upped it in the late rounds he wasnt effective and Hill tied him up to good effect
Hill boxed well, nice movement, worked thr jab against the tall southpaw style of Maske, straight right to the body was his best shot of the night, he drilled it home all night along with the left hook counter, Maske just stood in front of Hill and allowed himself to be picked off at will
Maske outpoints Hill in the rematch, non title fight 11 years after the first fight, absolute stinker of a fight, nothing happened it was like a sparring session with no exchanges, Maske was able to keep Hill on the outside with the jab and just kept moving, Hill couldn't get close really but what an abomination

Dariusz Michalczewski vs Virgil Hill
Mikhalczewski beats Hill by UD to become World Light Heavyweight champion, deserved win but thought a couple scores and commentary were a bit harsh on Hill, they ignored a lot of Hill's work, trouble for Hill although he jabbed well and put some nice punches together, there was nothing on his shots and Mikhalczewski walked right through him and repeatedly clocked him with lead right hands and in a lot of the rounds was the one landing the damaging punches, Hill also lost a point for low blows pretty harshly in the 5th, Mikhalczewski was formidable though, had that looknl of the boss and constantly walked Hill down

Jean Marc Mormeck vs Virgil Hill 1+2(highlights)
Mormeck stops Hill after 8 rounds to become World Cruiserweight champ Hill pulled out by his corner , Hill's eye was cut but didnt look that bad to me but his team made the call, he was starting to get beat up though Mormeck was coming on strong and landing some big shots which had Hill backing up
Hill started off well enough and was happy to engage for once, he was never a big punching Light Heavyweight so he was never gonna have the power to trouble Mormeck or the strength to hold him off but he done well to stay on the inside and trade, by the 5th round the steam had gone out of Hill's shots and Mormeck walked him down constantly and was hurting him before he was pulled out after the 8th, Mormeck showed a great array of punches to take Hill apart
Only managed to get highlights of the rematch which Mormeck won by close UD to retain the title, looked a similar fight from the first one with Hill showing his savvy to have it out but Mormeck landing thr big shots, he had Hill down in the 8th from a lead right hand, Hill only touched down momentarily but apart from that not much you can tell but Hill must've pushed him close

Virgil Hill vs Donny Lalonde
Hill beats Lalonde by UD over 10 rounds in a non title Cruiserweight fight, dominant win for Hill, he had Lalonde down in the 1st with the first punch he landed, caught Lalonde off balance with a left hook which sent him crashing into the ropes, he never went down but it was a legit KD
After that Hill just schooled Lalonde with the jab, there was the occasional power punch but the jab was immense and was all Hill needed, Lalonde threw more punches but was landing very little and it was a comfortable night for Hill who won wide

Stracey-Napoles.
Stracey does well to survive a first round were he gets put down.
Stracey gets his jab off in the second and quickly starts busting Napoles up.
Stracey was naughty on the inside left the head in and generally made himself the boss.
Great performance from Stracey. Survived the hostile crowd, altitude and the knockdown to beat one of the greats.
One of the best displays of the jab in British boxing history here. It’s incredible throughout.
He even does an Ali shuffle in the 3rd.

Agree with this 100% ...I was at this fight and it was really a tough encounter I remember..wow 20 years ago.Bodyshot3 wrote: ↑18 May 2020, 14:17Thaxton was just right for Hatton's education at that juncture in the sense that he was a notch up - had enough tools to make Ricky think about his own safety - and Jon was definitely not the type to fold or ever stop trying to turn the tide.Ricky Hatton vs Jon Thaxton

Danny Williams against Mark Potter on the undercard! That was sensational!
