Biggest Cherry Picker in Boxing atm?
Who you got?
My vote goes to Jermall Charlo.. Since he started fighting in world title fights his last 9 fights have been Cornelius Bundrage, Wilky Campfort, Austin Trout, Julian Williams, Jorge Sebastien Heiland, Hugo Centeno Jr, Matt Korobov, Brandon Adams, Dennis Hogan, It's a shockingly poor list of opponents for a so called 'world champion' and he doesn't show any desire to step up.
Mentions to Jose Carlos Ramirez, Caleb Plant, Billy Joe Saunders, Miguel Berchelt. Who just missed out on the top 10

Re: Biggest Cherry Picker in Boxing atm?
Although not the biggest I think Callum Smith gets an easy ride. 30 years old and the only decent name he’s fought is a shot/injured Groves, followed by a 9 month break, a ‘return fight’ and then a ‘homecoming fight’ although I accept Ryder was a mandatory. Loves playing the Canelo violin although that is more Joe Gallagher than Callum who expects everything to be on his terms (Anfield). It’s like Mayweather coming to fight Hatton at Man City’s ground.

I'm impressed by the vision in that answer.
I saw it just as I was trying to decide between Charlo and Wilder!
I'm pretty sure both men are being carefully 'guided' in their careers by their puppet masters pulling the strings quietly in the background.
The days of Ali and Frazier agreeing to a fight over a 45 minute lunch belong to another, more simpler era.
We're now in a vastly more cynical time where various 'a and b side' advantages and disadvantages have to be taken into fine consideration.
These include purses, venue, TV/pay per view revenue, fees for innumerous peripheral agencies, selection of sympathetic judging and referees, PED testing damage limitation, media coercement, rematch/ rehydration clauses etc etc.
If it wasn't for the fact of their fighters aging these processes could go on a lot longer!
Maybe they will if careers continue the trend to keep increasing in length, and the steady supply of new talent to milk doesn't dry up.
We fans might love certain boxers, but let's face it, there's quite a lot to dislike in this sport too. I wonder if the coliseum was like this?

Taking that Lubin fight should immediately remove Jermell from this list. From this list though I'll probably have to go with Zurdo Ramirez

Re: Biggest Cherry Picker in Boxing atm?
Is Lubin any less cherrypickish than Jesse Hart was? Though I do think Zurdo became a cherrypicker, also sounded full blown cherry when talking about a Bivol fight (and that he didn't want it lol)
Of that list it's Andrade with the blehest opposition considering where he should be at. Benavidez hasn't fought much either, but I'll give him a pass when he's like 23 or whatever instead of 32 (and his last opponent was his best)
Re: Biggest Cherry Picker in Boxing atm?
Tank Davis has ploughed through whole divisions without hitting a live champion.
He might be "all that" but why isn't he allowed to go after the big names?
Everyone hypes him, but I'm still waiting
to see if he actually any good.

You guys are so unfair to Andrade and Ramirez. They should be ahead of Wilder.
Re: Biggest Cherry Picker in Boxing atm?
Probably Zurdo Ramirez.
Danny Garcia would get it, but he will take on a challenge every now and again. He'll just fight a lot of Redkach's and Salka's in between.

Re: Biggest Cherry Picker in Boxing atm?
We might all have to wait a while longer and try to overcome the problem of getting the business confused with the sport.
Davis' backers dont want to any unnecessary risk upsetting their steady return on their investment until they can eventually get to the point where it will pay off big time.
Their eventual jackpot must be built up gradually all the while under the illusion that we fans are watching meaningful sporting occasions along the way.
This 'business' situation, trying to squeeze every last dollar, has got so ridiculous that even many obvious big automatic sell out fights are no longer getting made.
The fact that this thread exists speaks volumes.
Boxing is run and managed in such a deliberately confusing and complex way that the phrase "Thick as Thieves" comes to mind.
The usual suspects include Al Haymon's PBC, Oscar's Golden Boy/WBC/NSAC cartel (plus the other sanctioning leeches, err I mean bodies - easy to confuse heh!), uncle Al's Top Rank etc and the totally impartial networks and marketing or is it media reporting. They're just among the ones we know about. The sports numerous 'fixers' are probably still operating quite happily well below the spotlight.
How the relative newcomers Matchroom and DAZN fit into all this is not yet clear.
This whole business situation is getting so confusing that any prospective pro boxer is now advised to sit down and have a good hard think before signing anything. Getting used and abused is all well and fine if you're having a good time, but make sure it pays.
Of course the lawyers don't mind all this extra work one bit.
Although we fans still hold what they want - our money, it may not be enough to fix the sport. The last 2 highly profitable Mayweather dramatisations suggest that perhaps the business/sport is also becoming a top dollar circus too.
Roll up, roll up, come and see...

Wilder fought Fury twice. How does he get mentioned but not Joshua?

I wouldn't consider any of the upper echelon guys at Heavyweight to be cherry pickers.Ambling Alp II wrote: ↑25 May 2020, 19:11 Wilder fought Fury twice. How does he get mentioned but not Joshua?
Wilder and Fury have fought each other twice, and AJ has fought basically everyone else in the division. He hasn't fought a soft schedule by any means.

Re: Biggest Cherry Picker in Boxing atm?
Pretty much every hw top 10-15 you see and AJ has fought the most guys there. He moved super fast and never really had a cherry picking stage. He'd won a title and KO'd Breazeale only like 2 years into his career rather than 10.
Wilder was matched laughably soft for years but has stepped it up
Neither should be on the list obviously , stupid to suggest either in fact

Wilder and Fury lack AJ's depth of B-tier names on their records; the trouble is that AJ lacks Wilder and Fury.

Re: Biggest Cherry Picker in Boxing atm?
Maybe it's looked at that way now as the landscape is ever changing in Boxing.
But prior to Fury and Wilder fighting each other, Joshua's resume of having fought Povetkin, Wlad, Whyte, Parker, Breazeale, and Charles Martin.

He's done the following schedule being pro 5 years less AJ and Fury have
Wlad
Whyte
Povetkin
Parker
Ruiz x2
Takam
Breazeale (After 2 years instead of 10)
Gawd Martin
Lol, not soft at all, just stupidity to say that. Again, that's in 5 years less time than Wilder and Fury have been pro. 5 years ago Wilder had just fought his first ever top 10 opponent, Bermane Stiverne. His opponent before that, about 7 years into his career, was Jason Gavern. Imagine if AJ's next opponent were Jas Gavern![[icon_e_surprised.gif] :oo](./images/smilies/icon_e_surprised.gif)
Wlad
Whyte
Povetkin
Parker

Breazeale (After 2 years instead of 10)

No one should question AJ having the best overall resume at HW, but that doesn't mean that Fury and Wilder are top cherry pickers either.margaret thatcher wrote: ↑26 May 2020, 15:03 He's done the following schedule being pro 5 years less AJ and Fury have

Even among the contenders. Povetkin has fought several contenders, and Champions or Former champions. Luis Ortiz has fought Wilder twice. Whyte seems to be fighting just about everybody except for the top guys, and I think he's slated to fight Povetkin soon right?
So yeah there really ain't no cherry picking going on at Heavyweight at the moment amongst any of the names that are particularly relevant.
And frankly if they match a few soft guys next for Wilder to get his confidence back after the ass kicking he took from Fury I wouldn't blame 'em.

Yep, pro 5 less years than Wilder and Fury and already the deepest resume of wins, filled with other champs, contenders, and the long time kingpin
On Wilder's schedule he would just be fighting Jason Gavern now
