How do you think your greats will be regarded in 20 years

Post by margaret thatcher »

A lot of people here decry the lack of knowledge of current boxing fans. That given, do you think many of the older greats, from like before the 70s, will lose stock over the next years?

It's possible to me that a Willie Pep or a Tony Canzoneri could leave the step to Canelo... The Mexican could end up being top-10 ever p4p.

Assuming the trend continues:
fighter from the 1970s and before will be all but forgooton. Some of the older fans will not not be around anymore.
However it will go farther than this. Fighter from the 1980s and 1990s will be dismissed by many as well. Rember by 2040, those guys will be before their time as well.
And if they are before their time, then of course they will be dismissed by most.

For the heavyweights, the weight excuse won't be used much for dismissing heavyweights from the 1990s. The heavyweights won't be much bigger than. So, win/loss records will be pushed more by the younger fans.

The formula of top fighters not fighting each other will get even worse. Right now,, it seems everyone starts out 20-0 without beat another prospect or a tough veteran. Contenders then continue to duck each other, knowing if they bide their time they will get a shots at the 5 or more "titles. As a result, just about everyone in the top 10 and all the "champions" will have be undefeated or have 1 loss. We are already getting close to that.

The new guy will be compared to say Lennox Lewis. Lewis lost twice? and had a draw? He obviously was terrible. Holyfield and Tyson will be laughed at.

And the fans that are now in their 20s and 30s (in their 40s and 50s by that time) will be pissed off at the younger fans.

It'll be a mixed bag. Hardcore fans will always appreciate the all time greats. Many might fall down the ladder as new 'greats' emerge. Real greats. Not just cases of recency.
