What about Matthew Hatton and his handlers? Had a lot of critics if i remember rightly. Riding on Ricky's coat-tails etc. Won the British... and European over a solid opponent and ended up lasting the full stanza with Canelo in his first World title fight.
The books had him down for an inside the distance mullering.
Lacked the eye catching skill set but he was a hard lad and had a solid career.

In hindsight, it seems Alverez' set out his Modus operandi early doors ;-)
though he did entertain Mosley a few fight later.

indeed, dragging mediocre non-world-level welterweight M Hatton up to 154 was pretty egregious

Was a unified world champ with some good wins and regularly fighting good opposition, nice career where he got to mix with some excellent fighters and was a lot of fun. Even a bit blown up at 147 he got a decent string of wins over Alexander, Algeiri, Collazo. Khan has the type of career where it's really hard to ask much more of him , unless you're a Brook fan lol
Win or lose Khan always gave 100%. I regard him as one of the best value British fighters we have had in a very long time.
There are a lot of British greats who did not achieve anything like as much as Khan.

Whilst I am not his biggest fan - its unfair to not give him credit for what he achieved.

I agree, he fought the best out there and was always great value, I don't begrudge him a penny and I won't criticise him for not being interested in Brook

I actually thought Hatton done quite well against Canelo. He had a right go and was always trying to fire back when under the cosh. Unlike Fielding he can deffo look back and say he gave it a right go.

Hatton should be proud of the stand he took against Canelo.
Fielding reportedly had a million dollar purse, shades of Charles Martin

Have to agree. Do you think he would have had a more stellar reputation if he'd used his skill-set more?
Got drawn into a slugging mode too much, had sound movement on his toes and if utilizing his long range game behind an excellent jab would have resulted in more healthy results...results wise and health wise. His ring nous was poor
which resulted in great fayre for fight fans.

Carl Thompson is an obvious choice. No amateur background and a sometimes questionable chin. Interestingly if you look at the post fight Johnny Nelson loss, Nelson cannot regain his breath for ages. You have to wonder if had the ref let it continue whether he could have gassed Nelson out and pulled off another one of those impossible victories?

Yep, a scandalous stoppage. I was shocked at first by Nelson having it in him to hurt Carl but then
gutted at the ending. Who was the ref? Always enjoyed The Cat's roller coaster rides.

I agree his ring nous was relatively poor, a chinny guy who likes a slugfest! Willing to stand in front of Alvarez too! Nothing wrong with his cojones which is why he put bums on seats and earned the big money.

Not that boxrec ranks are seen as an "achievement" often, but liam smith being number 12 p4p feel like he is flying very very high.... he is above choclatito, lomachenko, Usyk, beterbeive and many more.

He would probably be a near 50-50 with felix cash, who is number 280th p4p...

jlh wrote: 13 Jun 2020, 05:52 I'd say Gavin Rees definitely over achieved. British, European and World Champion. At 5 foot 4 competing at 140, he made his lack of height an advantage. Solid career.
Yeah he was a good pressure fighter and I think he won the title against Soulimane Mbye back in 07 but then lost against Andreas Kolentik, came down to 135 and picked up domestic honours and also fought Adrien Broner as well.
