Press Release

Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano will collide in a blockbuster super fight at Manchester Arena on May 2 as the Irish legend puts her Lightweight World Titles on the line against Puerto Rico’s seven-weight World Champion, live on Sky Sports Box Office.

Two-weight World Champion Taylor can strengthen her status as one of the sport’s finest fighters against Serrano on the same night as Dillian Whyte risks his World Title ambitions in a huge Heavyweight encounter with the fearsome Alexander Povetkin.

Taylor (15-0, 6 KOs) sealed a dominant points win over Christina Linardatou to claim the WBO Super-Lightweight title at the same venue in November as she stepped up a division after becoming the Undisputed Lightweight ruler against Delfine Persoon in New York.

Serrano (38-1-1, 28 KOs) enhanced her reputation for thrilling fights with an action-packed points win over Heather Hardy at Madison Square Garden in September, while she sharpened her skills for Taylor in a stoppage win over Simone Aparacida Da Silva in Miami in January.

“It’s a fight that seems to have been talked about for years so I’m just glad it’s finally on,” said Taylor. “It’s a massive fight and one that I have been looking forward to for a long, long time.

“I’ve been working hard in training camp in the US since the start of the year so it’s great have a date to focus on now and I can’t wait for May 2nd.”

“I’m happy we finally got this big fight made because both myself & Katie deserve to be in this position,”
said Serrano. “While our fight could have been a main event, I’m still grateful it’s happening. I’m not going to talk down to Katie, as I know she won’t to me, so I’ll leave it at this: one thing that’s for sure is that we’ll both leave it all in the ring. Thanks to my Promoter Lou DiBella, Eddie Hearn, Matchroom Boxing, DAZN & Katie Taylor for this great opportunity. See you in Manchester!”

“Katie Taylor versus Amanda Serrano for the Undisputed Lightweight Championship of the World – this is the biggest women’s fight of all time,” said Eddie Hearn. “The whole of Ireland and Puerto Rico are going to be watching this absolute war between the Undisputed champion and the seven weight division champion – it doesn’t get any bigger!”

“I’m proud to co-promote this historic fight with Matchroom, and to have it featured on a massive card in Manchester,”
said Lou DiBella. “Two of the best female fighters in the world, two of the best of all time, will square up for boxing supremacy. Amanda didn’t shy away from moving back up in weight or from the fight being in the UK; she embraced the idea of winning on the road and cementing international stardom. Taylor vs. Serrano isn’t only the best of women’s boxing, it’s the best of what boxing is supposed to be.”

Adam Smith, Head of Sky Sports Boxing Development, said: “We’re absolutely delighted to add Katie Taylor’s sensational showdown with Amanda Serrano to the Whyte-Povetkin bill. With Sky Sports increasing its commitment to women’s sport, we’ll be showcasing the biggest fight of Taylor’s professional career after following every step of her epic journey.

“We’ve witnessed Serrano’s all-action style, having covered her breathless battle with Heather Hardy. A magnificent multi-weight champion, Serrano now takes on Taylor, Ireland’s dazzling star, as two elite competitors collide in Manchester. Whyte also rolls the dice in a high-risk heavyweight battle with Povetkin. Two explosive encounters that can only supply fireworks for fight fans.”

Tickets for Taylor vs. Serrano are priced £40, £60, £80, £100, £150, £200 and £400 (VIP).

Tickets are on sale to Fight Pass members NOW via StubHb (www.stubhub.co.uk) and Matchroom Boxing (www.matchroomboxing.com).

General Sale tickets are available to purchase from 10.00am on Friday March 6 via Manchester Arena (www.manchester-arena.com), StubHub (www.stubhub.co.uk) and Matchroom Boxing (www.matchroomboxing.com).

What are people’s opinion of Serrano? Ever since the Persoon fight I’ve become anti Taylor. Here’s hoping for an upset.

Thank you, sounds interesting. I assume you favour her? And who did you think won Taylor-Persoon? I won't make a fuss of your answer. In my opinion, I saw Persoon inflicting the more damage and walking down Taylor, effectively.

Maybe Taylor and Serrano are at same level. But Serrano wasn't tested since Yazmin Rivas in 2017 - and she is at a lower natural weight.

Dillian Whyte v Alexander Povetkin to be called off, says Eddie Hearn

Briton Dillian Whyte's heavyweight fight against Russian Alexander Povetkin will be called off because of coronavirus, says promoter Eddie Hearn.

Hearn is set to announce new details for the Manchester Arena event, scheduled for 2 May, which also includes Irish fighter Katie Taylor's world title bout against Cindy Serrano.

"We will make an announcement, but basically yes [it is off]," said Hearn.

The promoter added he hoped boxing would return in June.

"Whether that's behind closed doors at first, or whether that's back with small-hall shows, then we hope we can get to the bigger shows before the end of June," he explained.

Whyte drove 40 hours to a training camp in Portugal last week in the hope that the fight would go ahead.

The British Boxing Board of Control has suspended all events under its jurisdiction until the end of April.

Serrano has a good chance of passing Taylor, despite being inferior to that in speed and footwork. Amanda has an incredibly strong blow to the left, and Katie periodically opens up with protracted attacks in the hull. Puerto Rican has 28 knockout wins. Such high rates are not characteristic of women's boxing. Moreover, Serrano is boxing in the left-handed stance.

Re: Katie Taylor vs. Amanda Serrano - August 2020

Whyte-Povetkin, Taylor-Serrano on August 8 or 15, Fight Camp PPV

Dillian Whyte will face Alexander Povetkin on August 8 or 15 in a pay-per-view show that is also set to feature Katie Taylor putting her world lightweight titles on the line against seven-weight world champion Amanda Serrano.

Both fights had originally been scheduled for Manchester this month but were postponed because of the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.

Now they are lined up to go ahead as the fourth and final night of Matchroom’s behind-closed-doors Fight Camp in the grounds of the company headquarters in Brentwood, Essex.

Fight Camp now has a start date on July 18 or 25 and will run for four consecutive Saturday nights. Preparations moved a stage closer on Wednesday at a meeting with Arena Events – the company that built the temporary Diriyah Arena on the outskirts of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, for December’s Anthony Joshua-Andy Ruiz rematch – to finalise plans for the venue.

Eddie Hearn had originally planned to start the series of fights on July 4 but has now decided to push the start date back at least two weeks.

“When this all started, I was just thinking ’we have got to be the first back, we have to get started’,” Hearn told Boxing Scene. “As the planning and time has passed us by, I am starting to realise that the longer you leave it the fewer obstacles and barriers will be in place.

“But there is a fine line between making sure we get back promptly and making sure that we don’t give ourselves an impossible job or a job that would jeopardise the safety of the fighters or the quality of the show.

“What seems to be difficult in the UK compared to other places in the world is that people just aren’t in the gym. They are training, but not really. Private gyms re now open, but the Board (British Boxing Board of Control) are saying don’t spar yet.

“I started off thinking July 4, but then you realise that is six weeks away. I appreciate that some people are only going to need a month to get ready, but some people are going to need eight weeks. So I am looking at July 18 or 25 as our start date for the UK Fight Camp.”

The first show is likely to feature Terri Harper defending her WBC super-featherweight title against Natasha Jonas, while Povetkin and Serrano are the only boxer from outside the UK or Ireland that have been approached to box on the shows. With quarantine restrictions set to be imposed on people coming into the UK from June 8, both are likely to have to arrive in Great Britain at least two weeks before their bouts.

“I think it is going to look great,” Hearn said. “I didn’t want to do anything in a studio or a gym for multiple reasons. One, because it is going to look terrible, two, it is just is uncreative and not just what boxing is about, and three, for the fighters, as well.

“It is going to be very hard for them to get up for this in the way they do walking into a packed arena, or peaking at the right moment, but if you are in some kind of amphitheatre with the house lit up, London in the background, fireworks going off on the lawn, at least you feel your heart racing and you can get up for what might be the most important fight of your career.

“The venue is fine for ambulances and lorries and such, there is a clear path down the side of the house. There will not be masses of vehicles because there will only be about 90 people on site.

“I don’t want to come back like Top Rank are in America, with Shakur Stevenson against some bloke you have never heard of.

“It is challenging, there are loads of obstacles, it is expensive, but I feel this is something we are going to be remembered for, a bit like Wembley with Froch-Groves or Joshua-Klitschko. I’d like to be the one that came back with something different.”

Rescheduling the Whyte-Povetkin and Taylor-Serrano show to behind-closed-doors proved a more viable option than Oleksandr Usyk v Dereck Chisora, which is also currently seeking a new date, having originally been scheduled for the O2 Arena, London, last weekend.

“Whyte-Povetkin a smaller gate in Manchester and the costs are going to be a bit smaller because of the economies of scale,” Hearn said. “This will now be one of four events outside, compared to hiring Manchester Arena and lots of hotels and flights. We are cutting the card from ten fights to five fights. That will save some money.

“The sport has to move with the times. It is going to cost us £30,000 a show for testing, it is a lot of money. We have got no choice but to return, really, it is just a case of how much money you want to stick in.

“Hopefully in eight weeks’ time things will not be as difficult as they are now. We are planning like it is a military operation.”

As well as Harper v Jonas, other fights Hearn is hoping to make for the Fight Camp series include Anthony Fowler against former European welterweight champion Sam Eggington, Conor Benn against former British welterweight champion Johnny Garton and a clash between welterweight prospects Chris Kongo and Luther Clay.

“The bigger names are not going to come back, apart from Dillian Whyte who will be on fourth week,” Hearn said. “But, generally, I just want to put on a good card. Five fights a night, so no gimmee fights, no eight-rounders against some guy who was just brought it, they will be proper fights.”

Amanda Serrano claims Katie Taylor fight is off, cites reduced purse

Multi-division champion Amanda Serrano has sent out a press release announcing the cancellation of her planned-but-delayed bout with undisputed lightweight champion Katie Taylor, which was expected to co-headline Matchroom’s Dillian Whyte-Alexander Povetkin card later this year.

Serrano’s (38-1-1, 28 KO) manager had extremely harsh words for Matchroom’s latest offer.

“On four occasions, Amanda has signed on for the fight”, said Serrano’s manager/trainer Jordan Maldonado. “She signed to fight in late 2019 in New York, but Taylor opted to move up in weight. Then we accepted the fight for early 2020 in the same city, but Taylor’s team thought they needed more time to train and it was move to May 2 in England, but then a month and a half later, the COVID-19 pandemic came and it was moved to the 4th of July; all this, accepting a purse not up to par with the magnitude of the fight. But since Amanda wants to make history for Puerto Rico, we happily accepted.”

“Now they’re offering us the fight for August but removing almost 50% of Amanda’s purse. However, they are taking less from Taylor. We understand there is a situation around the world with COVID-19 and there are changes in the boxing platform, but big fights are big fights”, said Maldonado. “Many important fights are delayed until fans can come back to attend the events. If we accept this new offer, we’d be creating a new negative precedent in female boxing, after so many women have worked so hard to heighten the level of the sport.”

Serrano herself believes that “by November or December of last year, those 135-pound division belts would be parading around the streets of my beautiful island of Puerto Rico, but Taylor moved up for one fight and that hurt me, because I dream of historic fights and suddenly they disappear. Currently, I’m being offered a very low purse, as if I was starving to death. Throughout my career, I’ve sacrificed earnings to stay active in boxing, but now my achievements speak for themselves and I’m staying firm.”

The Puerto Rican star is currently riding a 24-fight winning streak dating back to 2012. Recent efforts saw her win super lightweight, super flyweight, and featherweight belts in quick succession.

Matchroom hopes to begin its “Fight Camp” series on July 25th, targeting Chris Jenkins vs. Conor Benn as its inaugural main event. If Serrano is off the table, perhaps Taylor (15-0, 6 KO) could give Delfine Persoon her well-deserved rematch.

Taylor vs. Serrano Erupts as Boxers, Promoters Trade Words

Amanda Serrano crossed swords with Eddie Hearn on Twitter on Sunday night, although it is still not clear whether or not the multi-weight world champion will be in the opposite corner to Katie Taylor on August 22 is still far from clear.

The fight, seen by some as the biggest female contest of all time, was originally to have gone ahead in May in Manchester, before being delayed by the coronavirus pandemic to July and Hearn now wants to stage it on his final Fight Camp card behind closed doors in the garden of the Matchroom offices in Essex on August 22.

Serrano’s manager, Jordan Maldonado, claimed the fight was off because she had been told to take a pay cut, something Hearn denied, saying no offer of a reduced purse had been made. Hearn also told BS.com that he had a binding contract for the fight.

Serrano came out fighting on social media, though, accusing Hearn of treating her like a toy.

“Yes I signed four contracts to fight Katie Taylor and despite what lies Eddie Hearn wants to say, he offers us a purse deduction and change of location in addition to yet another date,” Serrano said on Twitter. “My team will handle this. I’m not a toy, I’m done with games.”

Serrano claimed she had been told she would not get her full purse if there was not a crowd at the fight and she was not told of new dates, finding out when she read it online.

Hearn responded to Serrano by saying he had the right to reschedule the fight by the terms of the contract. He admitted he had sounded out the Serrano camp about taking a reduced purse – adding that Taylor’ pay was being cut – but said that when he was told Serrano would not take less money, it was confirmed in an email that she would get her full purse.

Lou DiBella then jumped into the fray, arguing that Hearn had offered a reduced purse and accusing the British promoter of lying. “Deal with me, I’m Amanda’s promoter,” he wrote. “Don’t antagonize her. Who are you, Trump?!”

Taylor also dived into the debate, posting: “We both signed contracts, all financial barriers have been removed and any training/travel issues are the same for both of us as I’m also training in the US. No more excuses, this is a fight to elevate the sport. August 22 is our time to make history. You in?”

As of now, however, the fight seems to be off. Hearn says he has made soundings to Delfine Persoon to be a replacement, although there are likely to be more rumblings before anything is confirmed.

Hearn Seeks Repayment Of Training Expenses, Serrano Responds

Eddie Hearn is not only prepared to move on from a potential blockbuster showdown between Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano, but now seeks to collect back the money he’s already invested into such a clash.

The high-powered promoter has come to the realization that chances are highly unlikely of Serrano (38-1-1, 28KOs) going through with a proposed August 22 fight date with Ireland’s Taylor (15-0, 6KOs) on the property of Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing headquarters in Brentwood, Essex, England. As such, notification has been sent to Serrano and her team to collect a $10,000 advance for training expenses.

New of his request was delivered to Brooklyn’s Serrano and her immediate team on Wednesday through her promoter, Lou DiBella. Naturally, it didn’t go over very well.

“Yesterday (Wednesday) we were notified by our promoter Lou DiBella that Eddie Hearn wants that 10k back by tomorrow Friday (July 3rd) at 5pm,” explained Jordan Maldonado, manager and head trainer of the record-setting seven-division titlist. “He seems not to care we trained not only from March till May but also for his rescheduled date of July 4th—another date where he canceled without an accurate explanation.”

The superfight between female pound-for-pound entrants was originally targeted for May 2 at Manchester Arena in Manchester, England. All parties were on board for the event until it was shut down due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Hearn attempted to salvage the event—which is headlined by a heavyweight clash between England’s Dillian Whyte and Russia’s Alexander Povetkin—in rescheduling the show in its entirety for July 4 at the same venue.

As such, both boxers remained hard at work. Serrano sought any open space in any of the five boroughs in New York City—where gyms have remained closed ever since mid-March—while Taylor set up shop in Connecticut.

“In March, we received $10,000 to be used for training expenses for the Taylor fight, which was previously scheduled for May 2nd,” Maldonado acknowledged. “With that money we hired a new trainer to help us in the technical aspects, hired sparring partners so we knew we wouldn’t miss out on any sessions.

“We also hired a nutritionist to make sure we maintained the weight up while training hard because 135 lbs isn’t Amanda's natural weight [Serrano has won titles in seven weight divisions, but with the 126-pound featherweight division serving as her physical peak]. While training hard she goes way under. Our new assistant trainer Gary Stark Sr. is out of Staten Island and those trips require $19 daily tolls.”

For reasons already reported by Boxing Scene, the July 4 date also fell by the wayside with the announcement from Matchroom Boxing of the event being canceled in terms of still taking place at Manchester Arena. The inability to stage shows in front of fans during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic eliminates the use of such venues.

From there came a plan by Hearn to stage a summer series in the backyard of his company headquarters. Four shows were announced running every Saturday from August 1 through the August 22 show to have included Whyte-Povetkin and Taylor-Serrano.

“Now because we didn’t [accept] his offer after the July cancellation of taking a purse deduction and a change of venue to literally fight in his backyard at one of his homes, he’s being disrespectful and vindictive,” insists Maldanado.

The fight began to fall apart once word made its way to Serrano through her promoter of a requested paycut, with as much also being asked of Taylor. A statement from Serrano’s publicist indicated that she was moving on from the fight, at which point Hearn alerted DiBella that the request was off the table and that she would be paid in full.

It was also learned that Serrano was prepared to serve as one of the contestants on Exatlón, a popular competition-style reality show on Telemundo which is headquartered in Miami, Florida. In a last-ditch effort to salvage the Taylor fight, Hearn submitted a cease and desist letter to the network, insisting that Serrano should not be permitted to appear on the show while still under contract for the oft-rescheduled title fight.

“I’ve lost two lucrative opportunities to fight in an MMA match and another to participate in the Exatlón competition waiting for Katie Taylor,” notes Serrano, who has won titles in every weight division from junior bantamweight (115-pounds) through junior welterweight (140 pounds). “The first dates were postponed because of issues on their side, not ours, and now I’m to blame? Signing with Matchroom Boxing has been stagnant to my career because I debuted with them in January 2019, made history, and I didn’t fight again until September. We just ask for respect and transparency.

“Their organizers say that the fight [with Taylor] will be the biggest in women’s boxing, but their actions show the opposite. He sent a cease and desist letter to Telemundo which were to air the show Exatlón stopping me from competing and making money and turns around to ask for a refund of spent money I used to train for canceled fight dates.”

Serrano has fought three times under her current contract with DAZN-USA and Hearn. The last such appearance came in the form of a short-notice fight on a Hearn-promoted show in Miami this past January. The placement came about after an opportunity fell through to appear on a Combates Americas mixed martial arts card, with the understanding that the next fight would be the proposed showdown with Taylor.

The fight now appears to be all but dead on arrival, with Taylor—who has been out of the ring since a 10-round win over Christina Linardatou to win a 140-pound title last November—to remain on the August 22 show against an opponent to be determined.

There remains a glimmer of hope it can still be Serrano, although next steps have been taken.

“Subject to them coming on this week and saying “Fair is fair, we’ll take the fight.”—there’s still time,” Hearn explained in a recent interview on IFL TV.

Absent that, it’s onto the next one.

“I like the Delfine Persoon fight,” noted Hearn. “We’ve made three offers to Delfine Persoon. It’s close, it’s close.”

Taylor and Belgium’s Persoon collided in a four-belt lightweight championship unification clash last June in New York City. The nip-and-tuck affair saw Taylor sprint out to an early lead before being forced to fend off a late surge by Persoon to take a 10-round majority decision, becoming the undisputed lightweight queen in the process.

The decision was met with mixed reviews, a storyline that would undoubtedly carry throughout the proposed rematch.

“It’s a much bigger fight because of the controversy from the first fight,” notes Hearn. “Katie wants to take that fight because there is doubt in some people’s mind that she won that fight. So now, it’s a fight like all these fights in the world that deserves sold-out crowds in an arena. But we don’t live in that world anymore. If you’re a fighter, if you care about legacy and achievement, you have to adapt to this environment. You have to go for it.

“[Taylor] wants Persoon, she wants Serrano, she wants Braekhus, she wants Cyborg. I’m not saying she’s done after that, but that’s what motivates her. When you look at the world, the only thing I can guarantee Katie Taylor if we can get Persoon over the line is, we can do it now. Can we do it in October or November? I don’t know. But I know we’ve got a slot in August. I think she’ll be up for it.”

It’s clear that Serrano is no longer up for anything Matchroom-related.

“I’ve read from many that Mr. Hearn was a horrible person,” states Serrano. “Now I know first-hand he’s actually worse than that. I’m a firm believer in God and know he doesn’t like ugly.

“To my Island and my fans, I love you and promise just like our island is resilient “So Am I!” We will be back.”

Jake Paul To Advise Amanda Serrano On Career, Says He Is Involved In Negotiating For Katie Taylor Fight

Jake Paul apparently has other plans in boxing that don’t necessarily involve throwing right hands.

The YouTube phenom recently revealed that he will be helping his friend and training mate Amanda Serrano navigate the business end of her boxing career. In fact, Paul says he is currently involved in talks with promoter Eddie Hearn to stage a title bout between Serrano and Hearn’s client, Ireland’s Katie Taylor, the undisputed women’s lightweight world champion. Paul founded his own promotional company – MVP – earlier this summer.

“We’re excited to announce that we’re going to be working with Amanda Serrano, who is one of the greatest female pound-for-pound fighters of all time,” Paul told Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour. “We are actively in talks with Eddie Hearn, and Most Valuable Promotions, which is my promotional company, to try and figure out Amanda Serrano and Katie Taylor, to make it like the biggest women’s fight of all time.”

Serrano (41-1-1, 30 KOs) herself recently hinted that the Taylor fight was a real possibility and confirmed that she was working with Paul (4-0, 3 KOs) and his manager Nakisa Bidarian.

“GOD IS GREAT!” Serrano, 32, wrote on her Twitter account. “I’m in a Great position to do huge things. I have @EddieHearn on board to make this mega fight & pay me my worth. My new business team @jakepaul @BAVAFASports making sure I’m PAID. DID I already say GOD IS GREAT? Oh OK cause he is!”

An unlikely duo, Paul and Serrano have both unreservedly expressed their admiration for each other, with Paul praising Serrano’s boxing abilities and credentials, and Serrano admiring the upstart’s fresh approach to marketing a sport often criticized for its outdated appeal. Both appeared on the same card headlined by Paul’s eventual eight-round cruiserweight split decision over Tyrone Woodley on Aug. 29 at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse in Cleveland, Ohio on Showtime pay-per-view. In the wind-up, Serrano, a seven-division champion, scored a dominant decision over Yamileth Mercado to defend her WBC/WBO/IBF featherweight titles.

Paul expects to be working closely with New York-based promoter Lou DiBella, who promotes Serrano.

“I think it's going to be in partnership [with Lou DiBella],” Paul said of the . “I think their deal was up and we might be using them to help, because they just know her career just as good as anyone else. I think it’s going to be a joint partnership. That’s what we’re finalizing now with the contract.”

As far as maneuvering his own promotional label goes, Paul says he expects to take on a more managerial role rather than as an out-and-out promoter.

“Yeah, that’s part of the plan [signing fighters],” Paul said. “We don’t necessarily want to be mixed up in the weeds of being a typical promoter, but I think we more so want to be on the management and advisory side because I think that’s where we can provide more help. And on the promotional side of just acting like a promoter, but not actually being one, like posting on social media, YouTube, Twitter. That’s really what matters now for fighters, getting their names out on social media and that translates to pay-per-view buys. That’s where I come in, that’s our differentiating factor.”

Amanda Serrano is the only woman I can think of who is fully capable of beating Katie Taylor, or at least giving the Irish woman a hell of a run for her money. This is the only fight in women's boxing other than Shields/Marshall that is absolutely worth watching.
