Reg and Harry were equally brilliant and it's incredible that Reg never swore on mic because his language was terrible.

Darke was the best of all time. No doubt whatsoever. You also got the feeling that in his spare time he is the kind of guy who sits down and throws on classic fights like marciano/walcott, schmeling louis etc. I actually heard him refer to the louis baer fights once while he was commentating on a fight.

Harry used to record his audio For some fights when he already knew the result. You can guess he knows the outcome sometimes.
Isn't that the same for gutteridge though? I am sure it says something in reg's book about hitting a bell in the studio to make it sound like they were there and totally mis-timing it on one occasion.
Yes the same for both.
I personally could tell more with Harry. But I’m just being picky otherwise I’d be sitting on the fence.
Both fantastic commentators.

Watt was great. I enjoyed Gil Clancy on the American broadcasts. Name dropped often but his tangents usually had gold at the end of the story.

Ironically, the Carpenter’s Rule quote is as impressive in the simile stakes as the commentating Rule of Carpenter.

On radio, Ian Darke reigned supreme.

I always enjoyed Jim Rosenthal in commentary too, especially if he got a Thomas Hearns assignment. His coverage of Hearns v Duran and Dennis Andries were terrific.

I also like John Rawling and Ron McIntosh.
As a colour commentator these days nobody seems to mention McCrory who was always top class and gelled really well with Darke. Darke for me is the only modern day commentator who can be mention in the same sentence as Reg and Harry.
Watt actually got a lot of stick on here towards the end, opinions I never agreed with.
Talking about McCrory he was a man who had experienced everything in the game and because of this he knew different fighters mindsets in what they were trying to achieve. Glen had been a prospect and a champion but also had been a sparring partner, journeyman and opponent, he understood when fighters are just trying to get through.
Shame he upset Adam Smith.

I thought Adam modelled his growling style on Glenn, who I found to be rather grim as a commentator. Adams the worst alongside Larry Merchant. Two utter utter cûnts.

I was thinking this too. I've tried to find Hearns-Duran on youtube specifically with his commentary but had no joy. He was good in his role at allegedly too.

Not aware of Watt working with Carpenter. Didn't Alan Minter did some co-commentary with him? Just between rounds. Not sure it was a regular set-up though.

It is up there with some of the great pieces of Sports TV commentating audio..... if that would have been in today's era it would have gone viral - just like Gary Neville's Fernando Torres commentary or Paul "Grrr" Smith.

Jim R's "And down" in the First KO is something special, but the second KO - well that's definitely the noise he made when he climaxes - "oohhhh".

stujones wrote: 19 Jun 2020, 12:10 Both we great, but being a tad controversial I think Reg seemed to be not so good when he had a co-commentator, he seemed to go off more on a tangent - whereas it didn't seem to distract Harry as much. Off course Reg and Jim were fantastic and because Harry didn't seem to have a regular co-commentator they would still be my favourite regular partnership. Although perhaps Harry and Jim might have been possibly the best pairing. Jim with anyone really, he is much missed.

When just doing the job on their own - it was Reg for me. Although Harry did this more often.

In some ways I found Reg a bit like Steve Holdsworth - on his own, informative and insightful. When with Bob Mee, he just seemed to want to spout off info on boxrec and just seemed like a phony and was constantly corrected by Bob who was fantastic.

I agree with the views on Ian Darke - fantastic and much missed on the boxing scene. I miss the Ian and Jim nights and I wish Sky could bring them back for PPVs - it would almost be like the use of Buffer, it is a special night when you here Ian and Jim's tones. I would have loved to have seen Jim's views on Joshua vs Ruiz 1 and would he have noticed Joshua struggling so early.
He had Frank Bruno at a show I was at and Frank called Fidel Castro Smith, Vidal Sassoon. He’d have BLM on his case nowadays.

And he was nearly James Bond! I prefered him as a pundit over compared to a commentator - "absolutely Ian" was his favourite line as commentator but yes, compared to the current mob - I miss him. I am glad Hobson still uses him.

Presenting: Jim Rosential

Colour Commentator: Jim Watt
I'd largely agree but I'd swap Mason for McCory and if Jim W can run to the studio fast enough, get him there also.

I doubt they even had the intelligence to say "salvo"
:yay: :yay: :OhYes:

Jim 'The Count' Rosenthal was the consummate pro. I remember him slagging off his old paymasters
and BBC for their boxing attitude a few years back.

In the current racial climate, he also survived a twitter breeze about 15 years ago when, following a boxing link, innocently called Olympic Javelin thrower Tessa Sanderson, a cracking spear chucker back in her day. Fatima Whitbread jumped to his defence saying 'that's what we all call our javelins'. He did apologise. Wouldn't survive today's circus.

I remember that. You had to laugh. Also Ron is great fun..... I used to cringe at him 6ft9 tall ugly as sin and with a tongue too big for his mouth..... but I like his turn of phrase and he knows a bit about boxing

I remember in the British fights at least, the colour commentators used to give a prediction.

Ashamed to say, i didn't even know about his one leg until he'd died.

Oh, and Darke was different gravy on the radio.
I used to think they were related, they looked similar. Guttridge was better IMO, anyone who says: "...his head flopped back like Worzel Gummidge" as part of his commentary shows class :TU:

Realising the situation he was in, they said your secrets safe with us.

:D So that's where McIntosh gets it from.

I remember Hagler Hearns where he came out with something like "this is like running through a minefield....
no scouting missions for these two".
