Eleider Alvarez vs. Joe Smith Jr. - August 22, 2020

In a development first reported by The Athletic’s Mike Coppinger, light heavyweights Eleider Alvarez and Joe Smith Jr. have agreed to terms for a title elimination bout that was ordered more than three months ago. A tentative date is in place for July 16, with the bout to take place at the MGM Grand Convention Center in Las Vegas.

News of the bout was confirmed to BS.com by Carl Moretti, vice president of operations for Top Rank who noted that the date could potentially change. The fight also remains pending the approval of the World Boxing Organization (WBO), which will likely come once they restore operations in mid-June.

The matchup serves as the opening leg of a four-man light heavyweight boxoff ordered by the WBO this past January. Original plans called for Canada’s Alvarez (25-1, 13KOs)—a former WBO light heavyweight titlist—to face Mexico’s Gilberto Ramirez (40-0, 26KOs), who abandoned his 168-pound title reign to campaign at 175 pounds. The fight was ordered alongside a pairing between Umar Salamov and Maksim Vlasov, a bout which both sides welcome but still await a fight date.

Ramirez removed himself from the mix after failing to comply with the WBO’s order to negotiate or with its ordered purse bid, which Top Rank won with a $350,000 offer as the session’s lone bidder. Top Rank had represented Ramirez through much of his career, but their relationship soured in the second half of 2019 and with the unbeaten former titlist deciding he will take his career in another direction.

That led to Smith (25-3, 20KOs)—a former title challenger from Eastern Long Island, New York—entering the mix, with his team all the way on board for a fight with Alvarez. The WBO formally ordered Alvarez-Smith in late February, only for such talks and the sport as a whole to be placed on hold due to the ongoing coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic.

Once Top Rank was able to arm itself with summer fight dates, a pathway was created to finalize this fight which will air live on an ESPN platform. Top Rank will stage a series of fights from the MGM Grand Convention Center beginning June 9 and presumably all the way through August. This fight easily ranks as among the best matchups planned over that stretch.

Alvarez and Smith both scored wins one week apart this past January on ESPN. Smith punched his way back into contention following a 10-round win over Philadelphia’s Jesse Hart on January 11 in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Hart was in line for a title shot had he taken any other route, but instead gambled on himself and lost out on a golden opportunity.

One week later, Alvarez picked up his first win in more than 17 months with a 7th round stoppage of Michael Seals. It was his first fight since losing his WBO title to Sergey Kovalev in their rematch last February, six months after Alvarez scored an upset knockout over the Russian slugger to win the belt in August 2018.

The winner of Alvarez-Smith will go on to face whomever prevails in the eliminator between Salamov (25-1, 19KOs)—a Russian bred contender now based out of Las Vegas—and Russia’s Vlasov (45-3, 26KOs). The last man standing will claim the belt left behind by ‘Canelo’ Alvarez shortly after his 11th round knockout of Kovalev last November in Las Vegas.

Eleider Alvarez is very tough, but he is also skilled boxer. Not many fans notice his fast sharp jab. IMO only chance for Smith is lucky punch KO. But it should be entertaining fight to determine another serious player in LHW. BTW will winner of this be mandatory for Beterbiev or Bivol ?

Alvarez is likely to win by decision, but I won't be surprised, if Smith manages to pull out a victory.

This is a quality main event here. I like this matchup.

I think Smith will outwork Alvarez, but I wouldn't be shocked at all if Alvarez is able to KO him or eke out a decision with his Boxing.

Should be a competitive matchup regardless of who comes out on top.

Man, he's not a good boxer (Joe Smith). He's very strong though but really just a slugger. I'd consider him beating Alvarez an upset but I also think it's possible. Alvarez has a relatively low output and Joe may land something heavy. If I was to bet, which I don't at the moment as gambling is the devils work, I would bet on Alvarez via decision.

Eleider Alvarez Suffers Shoulder Injury; Out Of 7/16 Fight With Joe Smith Jr.

This time, it was Eleider Alvarez who withdrew Wednesday from his 12-round light heavyweight fight against Joe Smith Jr. Alvarez and Smith were supposed to meet in a WBO 175-pound elimination match July 16 in Las Vegas, but the Montreal-based Alvarez suffered a shoulder injury while training.

BS.com has learned that the Alvarez-Smith match could be rescheduled for as soon as sometime in August, but it is unclear exactly how long Alvarez (25-1, 13 KOs) will need to fully recover. Smith (25-3, 20 KOs), of Mastic, New York, is not expected to face another opponent July 16, thus Bob Arum’s promotional company is seeking two new fighters for its main event that night.

The Athletic’s Mike Coppinger first reported Wednesday that an injured Alvarez withdrew from his July 16 fight with Smith.

Alvarez’s withdrawal marked the second straight day Top Rank lost a main event ESPN was supposed to televise in July. It also was the third time in the past week that Top Rank and ESPN lost a main event either due to an injury or COVID-19.

On Tuesday, Jamel Herring announced that he tested positive last week for COVID-19. That forced the postponement of his WBO junior lightweight title defense against Puerto Rico’s Jonathan Oquendo (31-6, 19 KOs), which was scheduled for July 2 in Las Vegas.

Top Rank replaced the Herring-Oquendo bout with Jose Pedraza-Mikkel LesPierre, a fight that had been postponed five days earlier due to COVID-19.

Puerto Rico’s Pedraza (26-3, 13 KOs) and Brooklyn’s LesPierre (22-1-1, 10 KOs) were supposed to headline ESPN’s card last Thursday night in Las Vegas. Their 10-round junior welterweight fight was postponed Thursday morning because LesPierre’s manager, Josie Taveras, tested positive for the coronavirus.

Pedraza and LesPierre initially thought they’d be rescheduled to fight July 14, but they agreed to meet July 2 once Herring had to postpone the Oquendo bout. Cincinnati’s Herring (21-2, 10 KOs) expects his fight with Oquendo to be rescheduled for some point later in July.

Whenever Alvarez and Smith meet, the winner will advance to fight for the vacant WBO light heavyweight title. Alvarez is ranked number three by the WBO, one spot above the fourth-rated Smith.

Russia’s Umar Salamov (25-1, 19 KOs), the WBO’s number one-ranked light heavyweight, will face fellow Russian Maksim Vlasov (45-3, 26 KOs) in the WBO’s other eliminator. The Alvarez-Smith and Salamov-Vlasov winners will fight for the WBO title Canelo Alvarez vacated after he knocked out Sergey Kovalev in the 11th round and became a four-division champion November 2 in Las Vegas.
