Next you'll be telling me Sam Langford wasn't great because he didn't win a title, or Ken Buchanan wasn't great because he didn't fight in Vegas, or whatever other garbage you come up with to disrespect the legends of the sport some of us love
What Iran Barkley did wasn't average, the dictionary says great = above average and substantial
Upset of the year, knockout of the year, fight of the year from the Bible of boxing, all three main belts, three weight champ, fought the biggest names, biggest punchers, best boxers around etc and was a huge draw - not average matey by any stretch & came up the hard way

Iran couldn't hold out for the 84 Olys because he had a new wife & newborn child so had to turn pro to feed them instead of robbing
Felt Forum always sold out fast when he was on the card on that tough ESPN circuit fighting everyone-all the guys noone wanted to fight, abused by Arum but came through in the end

That was when Danny Green beat the peak Roy Jones in AustraliaCoco wrote: ↑24 Jun 2020, 05:37I remember someone once commenting that if you beat a legend you become a legendjamesmcdonnell wrote: ↑24 Jun 2020, 05:34

Re: Carl Froch's Top Five Super-Middleweights Of All Time
fornicating hell watching that performance from Toney against Barkley and then knowing people are ranking fornicating Carl Froch and Mikkel fornicating Kessler ahead of him!

Re: Carl Froch's Top Five Super-Middleweights Of All Time
Toney's main prob in p4p lists at certain weights is that he never stayed at any weight! So he never had the longevity.
Looking at individual results and performances across his career will always put him right up there.
However some bad performances and lost years take away from him.
I don't think he gets enough credit for beating Jirov, then him masterclass against Holyfield, followed by easily winning the heavy title against Ruiz.
But then of course he lost the title on the drug test, was banned for a bit, came back against nobodies, older and slower and then when his chance came again time had passed him by.

Re: Carl Froch's Top Five Super-Middleweights Of All Time
People tend to rate greats from the era they watched boxing , has you get older and have watched a few eras , well you get wiser ,,, Toney was great , in his prime , the likes of Benn , Eubank would'nt go near him , , Some just remember him later when he got fatter and slower , but in his prime he was ferocious , just can't see ANY british boxer fighting and lasting with a prime Toney
Re: Carl Froch's Top Five Super-Middleweights Of All Time
Froch wouldn't go two rounds with Toney.

Re: Carl Froch's Top Five Super-Middleweights Of All Time
That's total rubbish. Toney rarely finished anybody that quickly, absolutely nothing to suggest that Froch, who was never stopped in his career, would capitulate in 2 rounds.
Go back to your subject matter of choice, Eubank, and stop talking utter hogwash.
Re: Carl Froch's Top Five Super-Middleweights Of All Time
Short memory. Dropped very heavily early and battered to a pulp early against light feather dusters Taylor and Groves. If or when Toney decided to walk you down and out you, it was over: Littles early when given one more round with huge cut, etc.jamesmcdonnell wrote: ↑24 Jun 2020, 08:24That's total rubbish. The amount of clean full bloodied quality short shots Toney would land on the slow motion long wide throwing Carl, from the opening bell would be hideous. That era was bad ass, BAD ASS. Those boys were from the ghetto and learned from Blackburn/Futch/Steward/Bill Miller/guy who taught Floyd Sr et al. Let's get real now. Love Carl bless him but come on.
Re: Carl Froch's Top Five Super-Middleweights Of All Time
Carl and the lovely Mikkel, much as we all like them, wouldn't even get through a PRESS CONFERENCE with James Toney or Iran Barkley let alone a bloody fight. They wouldn't make it to the fight, and if they did they'd likely freeze before the bell. A whole other level of bad.

More trolling. Boring.
Re: Carl Froch's Top Five Super-Middleweights Of All Time
A solid top 5. Probably, I'd agree.
A lot put Toney there, above of the some mentioned by Froch, but nah, Toney is overrated. I've overrated him myself in the past. He deserves the 6th place max. Toney was just outclassed by Roy. Ward would do the similar stuff to him. And the rest of the top 5 would at least outwork and outpoint him.

I don't think anybody else would have outclassed him - Roy had ridiculous reflexes and speed in addition to his boxing skills.DrDuke wrote: ↑24 Jun 2020, 10:37 A solid top 5. Probably, I'd agree.

I do agree though that he doesn't belong top 5, wasn't consistent enough.
Re: Carl Froch's Top Five Super-Middleweights Of All Time
Sure. However, it was a pure dominance, a shotout. Ward wouldn't be that stellar, but he would win pretty clearly, 10-2 or 9-3 by rounds. Froch, Calzaghe and Kessler - 8-4 or 7-5.jamesmcdonnell wrote: ↑24 Jun 2020, 10:38I don't think anybody else would have outclassed him - Roy had ridiculous reflexes and speed in addition to his boxing skills.DrDuke wrote: ↑24 Jun 2020, 10:37 A solid top 5. Re: Carl Froch's Top Five Super-Middleweights Of All Time
Roy beat 30% of Toney in reality, just look how weird his body and head looked-those IV drips kept him alive, did amazing to even get to the ring that night
Re: Carl Froch's Top Five Super-Middleweights Of All Time
what was roy jones best super midelweights fights against, i see him beat Vinny Pazienza he had lighting left hand also a natural throwing shots from angels style looked great , seem more of his light heavey fights but he is older then,
Re: Carl Froch's Top Five Super-Middleweights Of All Time
A near death James Toney, that's it
