Damiani was better skilled and was more durable physically, but less durable mentally. It looked like he had his nose broken in his both losses to Mercer and McCall, in both of them he seemed to quit after that. Well, a broken nose was confirmed only in the Mercer bout, but in the McCall fight it just looked like that. Sanders was obviously dangerous early, he was an exposive fighter with pretty fast hands, but he tend to fade later. Damiani had enough skills to outbox Sanders. If Damiani survived the early onslaught and didn't suffer another broken nose or stuff like that, he would most likely take the decision eventually.
