Ken Norton. He was an ATG and he still was in prime then (actually, his last hurrah).

Cooney, Shavers and Weaver were top fighters, but not of Norton's level. And Ali was shot, this fight was pointless.

The Witherspoon fight was also great to watch. Some call it a robbery, while I see Holmes as a clear winner, despite the fact of the fight being competetive.

It was not the Weaver fight. I wouldn't go with the Shavers fight either; he was decked once officially and really twice. Though for the most part he was in control.

It might have been the Norton fight. Holmes was consistent and looked very good against several guys that weren't in Norton's league; so it's hard to tell. For example, he looked very good against Ossie Ocasio and Chuck Wepner.

It has to be Norton, by process of elimination.

The Cooney match was a fantastic effort, but the challenger being out of the ring for over a year before the fight mars it a little.

Getting off the deck against Weaver and Shavers (and yes, some of those knockdowns weren't counted but they were legitimate) was inspiring. However, there were some sloppy moments, largely because of exhaustion on the part of all three.

Ali? That was just sad. Somebody said that it was like an autopsy on a man who was still alive. I don't think Holmes would want to be remembered for that match. He wept afterward.

So then there was one. As has been pointed out, it was Norton's last world class effort. Holmes was fighting hurt. Action from bell to bell. It was one of those rare fights where I can't begrudge any possible outcome: I thought Holmes won, but I understand those who think Norton edged it and a draw would be understandable.

I forgot, but I believe that The Easton Assassin's win over tough Ray Mercer was a great one. A one of a kind great win at 42 years old.

Cooney, but, truthfully, the first Shavers fight.

His hardest fight was probably Norton. A fight that some think he lost.

His greatest fight may have been the second Spinks fight. Not for the fight itself, but for what he would have accomplished had he been given the nod. A fight that some think he won.

His greatest defining fight was against a young and undefeated Gerry Cooney. It showed that it was a fight between an amateur against a pro.

His MOST COURAGEOUS fight might be with Ken Norton or Earnie Shavers fight #2. The Norton fight, the great Larry Holmes said that he had a pain in his shoulder and that he didn't want to postpone the shot for the WBC World Heavyweight Crown. And what a fight it was! One of the best in history.

With Shavers fight #2 he got rocked in round 7 by a wicked right. How did Larry got up? I don't know. But, he did and stopped Shavers in the 11th.

Got to be the Norton win.

Norton was a nightmare to fight if you weren't a concussive puncher, plus Holmes had to fight one armed as he busted his bicep too.

Tremendous performance.
