Felix Verdejo vs. Will Madera - July 16, 2020

Post by Ruthless-RKO »

Puerto Rican contender Félix Verdejo will face undefeated Will Madera as part of a Top Rank promoted card on July 16 in Las Vegas, according to El Nuevo Diaz.

The lightweight fight will be fought over ten rounds and broadcast on ESPN.

For Verdejo (26-1, 16 KO), it will be his first fight in the “Bubble” that Top Rank established at the MGM Grand's Conference Center - with strict restrictions to combat the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Top Rank began their series of events on June 9.

It will be Verdejo's second fight under veteran Cuban coach Ismael Salas. On January 18, in his first fight with Salas, Verdejo overcame Manuel Rojas by unanimous decision.

Madera, 29, is undefeated in 18 starts, but with three draws. His record is 15-0-3 with eight wins by way of knockout.

In his last fight, Madera scored a technical knockout in the second round over the Mexican Edgar Ramírez. Like Verdejo, he has never fought for a world title.

Madera's biggest win was an eight round decision over unbeaten Thomas Mattice, as part of a ShoBox card in February 2019.

Verdejo, an Olympian for Puerto Rico, has been rebuilding his career suffering a TKO defeat at the hands of Antonio Lozada in March 2018. He parted ways with longtime trainer Ricky Marquez and hooked up with Salas.

Verdejo has won three fights in a row and hopes to get himself in line for a world title shot in 2021.

I didn't expect big fights without fans but these line ups are beyond abysmal.

Verdejo has done nothing to put himself up there with the hot lightweights, I think this is decent. Verdejo seems talented but can't always put it together well, Madera less talented but will probably bring it

Marriaga-Yap Off

Miguel Marriaga was ready to fight.

Mark John Yap, to put it mildly, simply was not.

For the second time in as many shows this week, there comes a shakeup at the top level of a Top Rank on ESPN telecast live from MGM Grand Conference Center in Las Vegas. Thursday’s originally scheduled main event between Marriaga and Yap was cancelled by the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC), due to Yap weighing 136.7 pounds—nearly nine pounds above the contracted 128-pound limit for the contest.

Marriaga checked in at a fighting fit 127.3 pounds, though ultimately with nothing to show for it.

The show will go on, which is now down to four fights from an originally scheduled seven-bout slate. The new main event pits Puerto Rico’s Felix Verdejo (26-1, 16KOs) in a scheduled 10-round lightweight contest as he faces Albany’s Will Madera (15-0-3, 8KOs).

Their bout survived a minor scare when Madera came in just under the 136-pound contract limit after initially coming in slightly heavy. His second attempt registered at 135.8 pounds, slightly lighter than Verdejo, a 2012 Puerto Rico Olympian and 2013 BS.com Prospect of the Year who weighed 135.9 pounds.

I don’t think Verdejo is that good but he gets by Madera most likely.

If anyone likes free money Jared Anderson is only -2000 against Hector Perez tonight. Yes that’s actually value. That should be -10,000.

Sanchez’s corner is doing extremely well coaching their man tonight. Perfect instructions in round 2.

I guess you gotta give the man a break when he takes an uppercut on one knee.

Yeah that must've been what it was. It wasn't really the guy's fault that hit him because he hit right as he was going down, but at the same time yeah he probably felt bad that he allowed the blow to get through so he counted slow.

Anderson at 241 is heaviest of his career. Still a babe at 20. Looks good.

Hope to see him avoid unnecessary shots. Was a bit sloppy on defense last time out.
