Greatest fighters with only a few punches

Post by margaret thatcher »

Which greats stand out for having only a very limited punch selection, almost only of a particular shot or two? Think Deontay Wilder type thing...

Razor Ruddock, once he discovered he could punch, became a virtually one shot fighter. Gerry Cooney too, albeit it was the one punch to the body and head. Though you wouldn't describe either as great.

Muhammad Ali's was reasonably sparse. he almost never threw a body shot, and his left hook and uppercuts were only usually seen in a combo at most. Seemed to workout ok for him though.

Henry Copper was left-handed but fought orthodox. In the fights I've seen he only ever throws the jab and the left hook. Not a ATG, obviously

Klitschkos were very dependant on jabs and one-twos.

In Wlad's case it was a choice to fight with a safety first mentality, rather than having a limited repertoire of punches.

Early in his career he was more varied but a lot more open. Later on he still had a brutal left hook when he threw it.

Wlad had every punch in the book. Vitali was a slap fighter.

Andries went for a long time with nothing more than the overhand right and even as the improved version under Steward he was heavily reliant on it

Virgil Hill, almost literally a left jab and nothing else.

Mickey Ward threw plenty of other punches beyond the left to the body but for the most part he couldn’t throw them for sh1t. That hook aside he had pretty poor punch technique IMO
