Small hall boxing

With social distancing likely to be around for a very long time to come I fear that there will be no small Hall boxing in the foreseeable future the only thing I can think of to make shows viable is big ticket price increases and a big drop in boxers purses. The latter would mean boxers just carnt make any money simply because cost of licence and annual medical fees etc would in my opinion force boxers onto the unlicensed circuit . What do you all think is the way forward for small hall if there is a way forward

It must be a worrying time for the local outfits putting together the town hall & leisure centre shows.

I'd be prepared to pay more for a ticket to begin with but how realistic is it on a wider scale ?

I wonder what sort of price jump would be needed to make a show feasible.

I reckon at least 50% as venues would only be allowed to run at 30% capacity

I'd be prepared to pay that sort of increase just so there were some local shows. For the boxers themselves selling tickets it must be bad news. Some struggle to do big numbers so asking for more dosh from their punters might be a stretch.

Exactly that’s why I say a lot will go unlicensed as the annual outlay for a licence will be prohibitive as you have to pay up front and maybe you will only fight 4 times a year because there won’t be enough shows to support the amount of licensed boxers very challenging times ly ahead

Not really a fan of small hall boxing TBH, for the casual fan it's awful, paying to watch a boxer fight a journeyman who will most likely know his role and just cover up for 4/6 rounds and just move with the boxer 90% of the time and often that's like 90-100% of the card it like that, it's more about paying to watch your mate or someone you know fight.

When the "opponents" make the home fighter work for the win you still get an entertaining fight.

It's also good to watch a promoter bring through local talent and watch them develop.

Small hall shows are going to struggle big time I think.

Anything with crowds is going to be dodgy.

Only way is a vaccine I think.

The venues will have to reduce their prices, else they'll have no events at all taking place.

Never enjoy watching mismatches. Basically a rip off these shows.

The worst one for me was about 2 years ago I travelled 4 and a half hours. 8 fights. Pretty much all the opposition was eastern-European. The away corner didn’t win a ROUND all night.

That's the problem with small hall shows these days, the promoters have to keep their ticket sellers winning.

In the old days(90's) the midland dinner circuit was pretty good, tickets were already sold as they were corporate events, the boxing didn't really matter. Usually a pair of journeymen were thrown into each bout, both desperate for a win to keep the board off their back. Normally both fighters would go for it instead of staying in their shell when stepped up in class.

If the whole card is stacked with mismatches or very one sided fights, it's true to say that it's not a great spectacle at all. As long as the promoter balances the night with some competitive matches, fans tend to go home happy.

It's a very hard job for a small hall promoter to get to the position where they can stack a show full of 50/50 fights, and then again the next time and so on.

Yeah I agree will be at least 18 months to 2 years if there’s any shows whatsoever where spectators are allowed in if they wouldn’t allow fans to watch cricket or football albeit with social distancing there is absolutely no chance of fans being allowed in small or large indoor venues this could spell the end of the road for local small hall boxing there’s no way anybody could run a show with only about 25% capacity it would be financial suicide for promotors imo
