Oscar Bonavena's fighting style?

Post by osc1360 »

His BoxRec profile says orthodox stance, however, he switched stances, was left-handed, and had a rather unorthodox style of fighting.

Much of the boxing footage of Bonavena I've seen illustrates his effectiveness with his right hand.

So is it fair to say: Bonavena was an unorthodox slugger with a deadly right hand.

He was definitely a slugger. A bit of a mauling style I'd say where his style don't look pretty, but it's effective.

A good illustration of Bonavena's style was his fight with Ali in 1970 , which can be seen on YouTube.

He was slow compared to Ali, but Oscar struggled to land, leading with the jab, slugging to the midsection and forcing Ali back , trying to score while Ali was leaning back. Oscar also had success with his jab against Frazier in their first fight, muscling Joe backwards , and following up with rights and scored two knockdown , coming very close to defeating Joe.

Oscar had the fundamentals, but against guys with fast hands like Ali and Frazier , he was a bit too slow and plodding.
