Sergey Lipinets vs. Kudratillo Abdukakharov - October 24, 2020 (OFF)
Sergey Lipinets vs. Kudratillo Abdukakharov Tops October 10 Showtime Tripleheader
A welterweight fight that has been in development since last fall finally has a date and a home.
The long-ago agreed-to welterweight clash between Kudratillo Abdukakhorov and Sergey Lipinets will now take place October 10, live on Showtime from crowdless Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, Connecticut. The bout will be contested for the International Boxing Federation (IBF) interim welterweight title at stake, with the winner will be first in line for a mandatory shot at unified welterweight titlist Errol Spence Jr.
For all of the boxing politics in the sport, putting together a fight between boxers representing Premier Boxing Champions (Lipinets) and Top Rank (Abdukakhorov) proved far easier than actually securing a date for the occasion. Both boxers were willing to square off simply when there was little more at stake than simply marking time at a point when it was unclear when Spence (26-0, 21KOs) would be able to return to the ring following injuries sustained in a single car crash last fall.
Their patience now comes with the reward of an interim title at stake, while landing in the middle of a loaded second-half schedule announced by Showtime and PBC on Wednesday.
As the top two contenders, Abdukakhorov and Lipinets (16-1, 12KOs) were sent an invitation to contend for the interim title. Neither side blinked in accepting the offer, with their respective promoters working out the financial aspect of the bout without any real issues—other than being able to find a date and location.
Tentative plans called for the two to collide on the undercard portion of the heavyweight championship rematch between Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder this past February in Las Vegas. The hold-up in Spence’s title status delayed that vision, before all involved parties targeted May 16 for the bout—only to get shut down due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
The bout will now headline its own tripleheader, aided by a pair of crossroads bouts.
In the chief support, Sacramento’s Xavier Martinez (15-0, 11KOs) will face former secondary featherweight titlist Claudio Marrero in a 10-round junior lightweight bout.
Opening the telecast, Baltimore’s Malik Hawkins (18-0, 11KOs) and Puerto Rico’s Subriel Matias (15-1, 15KOs) collide in a battle of rising junior welterweights.
Uzbekistan’s Abdukakhorov (17-0, 9KOs) has long served as the mandatory challenger to the IBF title which Spence has held since a May 2017 knockout win over England’s Kell Brook. Spence has since added the World Boxing Council (WBC) welterweight title to his collection following a 12-round win over Shawn Porter in their unification bout and Fight of the Year-level war last September in Los Angeles.
Just two weeks later, Spence suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries in a car crash in downtown Dallas, near his Desoto, Texas home. His recovery process and career update provided the IBF with enough information to determine the need to establish an interim titlist.
Abdukakhorov has since added a win over former welterweight titlist Luis Collazo, which came last October in Philadelphia.
Lipinets (16-1, 12KOs)—a former 140-pound titlist from Woodland Hills, California by way of Kazakhstan—has sought to make his way back to the title scene ever losing his strap in a 12-round decision to Mikey Garcia last March.
Three wins have followed, including a 10th round knockout of former two-division title claimant Lamont Peterson in their Fight-of-the-Year level war last March atop a PBC on FS1 card from Oxon Hill, Maryland. Four months later came his most recent bout, slaughtering Philippines’ Jayar Inson—a late replacement for an ill John Molina Jr.—in two rounds on the undercard of Manny Pacquiao’s welterweight title winning effort over unbeaten Keith Thurman last July in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Re: Sergey Lipinets vs. Kudratillo Abdukakharov - October 10, 2020
Sergey Lipinets will have to pass eight COVID-19 tests, prior to the fight with Uzbekistani Kudratillo Abdukakhorov. The manager of the Russian boxer, Alex Weisfeld, informed TASS about the testing schedule.
"The tests will begin a month before the fight. There will be two of them a week," Wesifeld said.
The fight will take place on September 26 in the United States, with the International Boxing Federation (IBF) welterweight title at stake. Showtime will televise the card.
According to Weisfeld, Lipinets is already in the United States.
Lipints has 16 wins (12 by knockout) and one defeat. Abdukakhorov has 17 wins (9 by knockout) and not a single defeat.

Sergey Lipinets vs Kudratillo Abdukakhorov facing delay due to visa issues
The fight is currently scheduled for October 10th on Showtime
The IBF interim welterweight title fight between Kudratillo Abdukakhorov and Sergey Lipinets, previously targeted for May 16th and then “late September” before settling on October 10th, could be facing further delay. Asian Boxing reports that Abdukakhorov is having difficulties securing a visa “due to delays with the US Embassy in Uzbekistan.”
According to Abdukakhorov (17-0, 9 KO), the issue “should be resolved within 2-3 days” once the embassy opens. If not, “the fight will be postponed to November.” He has not fought since scoring a technical decision over Luis Collazo last October, while Lipinets (16-1, 12 KO) was last seen leveling Jayar Inson the previous July.
It’s unclear whether the whole show would move along with the main card, as the supporting cast is pretty strong. Malik Hawkins vs. Subriel Matias and Xavier Martinez vs. Claudio Marrero are both quality fights and could potentially carry a show by themselves.
An unspoken but interesting piece of this development is the potential effect on Matchroom, who’ve been heavily pushing Uzbek standouts Israil Madrimov, Murodjon Akhmadaliev, and Shakhram Giyasov. Embassy delays could badly mangle their schedules if they persist.

Re: Sergey Lipinets vs. Kudratillo Abdukakharov - October 10, 2020
Lipinets-Abdukakhorov Interim Title Fight Remains On Course, Backup Plan In Place
Sergey Lipinets remains on the hunt to challenge for a welterweight strap, hoping to move one step closer with a win in his next fight.
That path could potentially become compromised although the next few days will tell the tale.
The former 140-pound titlist remains on course for the International Boxing Federation (IBF) interim welterweight title fight versus unbeaten contender Kudratillo Abdukakhorov (17-0, 9KOs). Their bout is due to headline the October 10 edition of Showtime Championship Boxing, live from Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, Connecticut.
The winner will be in position to challenge for the true IBF welterweight title held by Errol Spence, who defends that strap along with the World Boxing Council (WBC) belt versus Danny Garcia on November 21.
Challenging such plans at the moment is Abdukakhorov’s ability to leave his native Uzbekistan. The process to secure a travel visa has proven troublesome, given the backlog due to travel restrictions stemming from the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
Sources have informed BS.com that the fight is still on scheduled to proceed as-is, with the sense that Abdukakhorov—who is currently training in Tashkent, Uzbekistan—will see his paperwork processed in time to make the trip abroad.
Unfortunately, there is a deadline in place before such a decision has to be made to advance to a backup plan.
Ever since returning to the sport, Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) has assigned at least one standby opponent per show, in the event that a boxer from the main event or chief support experiences any other matter that results in not being able to move forward with a fight. To date, it has only affected one main event—the first one out the gate, when Tramaine Williams stepped in to face Angelo Leo in the August 1 Showtime main event—for a vacant junior featherweight title fight—when Stephen Fulton tested positive for COVID-19.
Veteran welterweight contender Chris van Heerden (28-2-1, 12KOs) has been assigned that role for the October 10 show, three credible sources confirmed to Boxing Scene. The issue with moving forward with such a fight, however, is the fact that Van Heerden is not ranked by the IBF, which would force Lipinets to enter a non-title affair while waiting for an interim title fight with Abdukakhorov to resurface.
Such a path would also conflict with the belief shared by Abdukakhorov that his bout with Lipinets would simply endure a delay long enough to get him in the U.S., as he suggested to local publication Olamsport.com.
“I'm currently training in Tashkent. The visa issue should be resolved in 2-3 days, otherwise the fight will be postponed to November,” Abdukakhorov believes. “Top Rank has also been informed about this.
“In 2-3 days we will… get a visa. If I don't, my fight will be postponed to November.”
Sources inform BS.com that no plans are in place to postpone the October 10 show, nor is it likely that the entire main event would be removed from the show.
For now, both boxers continue to hope for the best.
Abdukakhorov pushed his way to the top of the contender queue following a technical decision win over former welterweight titlist Luis Collazo last October in Philadelphia. At the time, he was prepared to next challenge for the IBF title although that status was met with complications due to Spence suffering injuries in a single car-crash earlier in the month.
An official request was filed for Abdukakhorov and Lipinets to vie for some form of the IBF title, having been informed of a fight for the interim belt after Spence confirmed his general timetable for a ring return. The bout was once targeted for May, but was never formally announced as the ongoing global health crisis wiped out the entire spring schedule.
All told, Lipinets (16-1, 12KOs)—a 31-year old from Kazakhstan who now lives in Woodland Hills, California—has been out of the ring since a 2nd round knockout of Philippines Jayar Inson last July. Lipinets was originally due to face John Molina, who withdrew from their Fox Sports Pay-Per-View preliminary bout after falling ill during fight week.
The circumstances left Lipinets to face a southpaw as a late replacement in a less significant fight than originally planned. History could repeat itself should Abdukakhorov have to withdraw, leaving Lipinets to face left-handed van Heerden on less than two weeks’ notice, all while still having to wait at least for his next fight in order to contend for a title of sorts.
For now, all originally involved parties continue to hope for the best and that things remain as presently scheduled.

Re: Sergey Lipinets vs. Kudratillo Abdukakharov - October 10, 2020 (Postponed)
Lipinets-Abdukakhorov Postponed; Showtime Unlikely To Televise Fights 10/10
Kudratillo Abdukakhorov and Sergey Lipinets will have to wait a little longer before they fight for the IBF’s interim welterweight title.
Boxing Scene has confirmed that their 12-round, 147-pound title fight has been postponed from its announced date of October 10. It could be rescheduled for November 28, when Showtime is set to televise another card, but the new date hadn’t been finalized as of Thursday afternoon.
Kazakhstan’s Lipinets revealed in a Tweet posted late Wednesday night that his fight against Abdukakhorov would be postponed.
Abdukakhorov (17-0, 9 KOs), the IBF’s number one contender at 147 pounds, and the third-ranked Lipinets (16-1, 12 KOs) were supposed to headline a Showtime Championship Boxing tripleheader October 10 at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut. The 27-year-old Abdukakhorov, an Uzbekistan native who resides in Malaysia, encountered a visa issue, though, that would’ve prevented him from arriving in the United States in time to participate in required COVID-19 testing for their fight a week from Saturday night.
It is unlikely Showtime will move forward with its broadcast October 10. The other two fights it is scheduled to air that night, which were to feature Mayweather Promotions prospects Malik Hawkins and Xavier Martinez, are more likely to be added to other telecasts Showtime has scheduled for later this year.
In one of those bouts, Hawkins (18-0, 11 KOs), a junior welterweight from Baltimore, is supposed to oppose Puerto Rico’s Subriel Matias (15-1, 15 KOs) in a 10-rounder. In the other 10-round fight Showtime previously announced, Martinez (15-0, 11 KOs), of Sacramento, California, has agreed to meet the Dominican Republic’s Claudio Marrero (24-4, 17 KOs).
If Abdukakhorov-Lipinets is added to Showtime’s November 28 telecast, it’ll be packaged with fights featuring Chris Colbert and Richardson Hitchins.
Brooklyn’s Colbert (14-0, 5 KOs) is slated to make a defense of his WBA interim super featherweight title against Panama’s Jaime Arboleda (16-1, 13 KOs) in a 12-rounder. Hitchins (11-0, 5 KOs), another Brooklyn native, is scheduled to square off against Argenis Mendez (25-5-3, 12 KOs, 1 NC), a former IBF 130-pound champion from the Dominican Republic, in a 10-round junior welterweight bout.
Whenever Abdukakhorov and Lipinets fight, the winner will move into position to face whoever emerges victorious from the Errol Spence Jr.-Danny Garcia bout.
Spence (26-0, 21 KOs), of DeSoto, Texas, will face Philadelphia’s Danny Garcia (36-2, 21 KOs) in a 12-round fight November 21 for Spence’s IBF and WBC welterweight titles. The site of the FOX Pay-Per-View event headlined by Spence and Garcia hasn’t been determined.

Re: Sergey Lipinets vs. Kudratillo Abdukakharov - October 24, 2020
Showtime Tripleheader Moved To October 24
Sergey Lipinets and Kudratillo Abdukakhorov were provided good news for a change, as their oft-delayed interim title fight finally has a new date. The two will collide October 24, live on Showtime atop a televised tripleheader originally due to take place this weekend.
The reason for the delay was to allow Abdukakhorov (17-0, 9KOs)—an unbeaten Uzbekistan native now based out of Malaysia—enough time to secure a travel visa. With that no longer being an issue, the entire card can move forward even if two weeks later than expected.
“Given what Kudratillo has gone through to get this opportunity, the fight seems easier,” said Carl Moretti, vice president of operations for Top Rank who promotes Abdukakhorov. “But everyone knows it won’t be.''
Abdukakhorov enters following a year-long layoff, having outpointed former titlist Luis Collazo last October in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Soon thereafter came discussion to face Lipinets (16-1, 12KOs), though there came a delay in whether to stage such a fight as an eliminator or an interim title fight. The hold-up came due to the unknown status at the time of unbeaten, unified IBF/WBC welterweight titlist Errol Spence (26-0, 21KOs), who was still recovering from injuries sustained in a near-fatal single car crash last October in Dallas.
The IBF eventually ruled to declare the matchup as an interim title fight, to which both parties agreed almost immediately upon the first round of negotiations. A tentative time frame of May was in place for the clash, only to get postponed due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
Showtime formally announced the fight in late July, as part of its full schedule through the end of the year.
For Lipinets, it means avoiding a second straight fight versus a replacement opponent. The Kazakhstan-born former 140-pound titlist—who is now based in Woodland Hills, California—was dealt such a fight last July, when he was due to face John Molina Jr. on the undercard of Manny Pacquiao's welterweight title-consolidation clash with Keith Thurman. Molina fell ill during fight week, resulting in Lipinets facing very late fill-in foe Jayar Inson, whom he wiped out in the 2nd round of their Fox Sports Pay-Per-View preliminary bout.
Lipinets prominently arrived on the welterweight scene in his previous outing, stopping former two-division titlist Lamont Peterson in the 10th round of their instant classic last March.
The salvaged show is also good news for the supporting talent on the card, as two bouts previously in limbo are able to proceed as planned. Unbeaten junior welterweight Malik Hawkins (18-0, 11KOs) squares off with Puerto Rican knockout artist Subriel Matias (15-1, 15KOs) in the televised opener, while undefeated junior lightweight Xavier Martinez (15-0, 11KOs) faces former interim featherweight titlist Claudio Marrero (24-4, 17KOs) in the evening's chief support.
“Sergey Lipinets announced himself last year as a serious contender in the welterweight division and can move closer to the top of the stacked weight class against the tough unbeaten Kudratillo Abdukakhorov on October 24,” said Tom Brown, president of TGB Promotions. “In undercard attractions, unbeaten Xavier Martínez can earn a career-best victory over the always dangerous Claudio Marrero, while talented super lightweight Malik Hawkins and the powerful Subriel Matías will clash with a chance for the winner to propel themselves up the 140-pound rankings.
"These are three evenly matched bouts that will show us a lot about all of the fighters, while treating fans to great action.”

Sergey Lipinets quotes for Abdukakhorov fight on October 24
Former world champion Sergey Lipinets has not let anything, be it the pandemic or a change in fight date, distracts him from preparations for his battle against unbeaten Kudratillo Abdukakhorov, as they fight for interim IBF Welterweight Title headlining action live on SHOWTIME Saturday, October 24 (9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT) in an event presented by Premier Boxing Champions.
“I took the change in date like a champion, and I’ll do the same thing on October 24 that I would have done on October 10,” said Lipinets. “I’m powerful mentally, so there’s really no issue with the timing change. Training camp has been going great, and I’m 100% ready for this one. I’ve been working with Joe Goossen and sparring with a lot of great fighters, including Rashidi Ellis and Ronald Cruz.”
The 31-year-old Lipinets credits the renowned coach Goossen for the level of performance he has shown in the ring in the two years they’ve worked together. The union between Lipinets and Goossen followed Lipinets’ run at 140-pounds, which saw him defeat Akihiro Kondo for the IBF Super Lightweight Championship on SHOWTIME in 2017 before losing the title by the decision to Mikey Garcia the following year.
“My progression is totally attributed to working with Joe Goossen,” said Lipinets. “It’s like going from high school education, then to college, and now I feel like I’m in graduate school. I’ve learned more with Joe than in all my previous time in the sport.
“Joe Goossen has taught me a lot about the short game and working on the inside. He’s also helped me with my lateral movement and made me way more durable. That’s all combined with my power increasing to 147 pounds. I’m ready to show all of it on October 24.”
Lipinets added two knockout victories to his ledger in 2019. In March, he stopped two-division champion, Lamont Peterson, in a memorable firefight before blasting out Jayar Inson in the second-round in July. A win on October 24 puts Lipinets in line for the winner of the matchup between IBF and WBC Welterweight Champion Errol Spence Jr. and two-division champion Danny Garcia and will help solidify his spot amongst the best in the star-studded 147-pound weight class. However, these potential high-profile matchups don’t take anything away from his focus heading into his upcoming fight.
“I don’t really think about the other top welterweight fighters like Errol Spence Jr., Manny Pacquiao, Danny Garcia, Keith Thurman, Shawn Porter or Terence Crawford,” said Lipinets. “To get to them, I have to win on October 24. Then everything else will fall into place. The top guys will fight me when they have to. That’s been the story of my career. Nobody has fought me because they wanted to, but usually because they had to.”
The unbeaten Abdukakhorov presents a challenge that Lipinets embraces. Abdukakhorov enters this fight after a victory over former champion Luis Collazo in addition to the extensive amateur experience that Lipinets knows will make him a formidable opponent when they square off October 24.
“Nobody is at the top of the IBF rankings for nothing,” said Lipinets. “Abdukakhorov had a successful amateur career with a lot of fights. He moves fast and knows his way around the ring. I know he’s tough, strong, and he’ll do his best to stay in there with me. But I’m going to box him, fight at a distance if I have to, and pile up points against him. I expect a great fight. I’ll have a plan for whatever he brings to the table and get the win; however, I have to!”
