Muhammad Ali KO Losses

Post by evndrbsn »

As an amateur, Cassius Clay/Muhammad Ali was KO'd in 1955 by Willy Moran in Louisville, KY and then again February 26, 1958 by Kent Green in two rounds in Chicago, IL. Does anyone know the circumstances in these bouts and whether or not Ali was down and out? Any information regarding his KO losses would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not too convinced of these stats. Surely Clay was not a Middleweight at age 14yrs?? and a Light Heavy at 16??

He was a teenager. Two years is a lot of time to grow from middleweight to light heavyweights.

I think you missed my point. I'm saying it's hardly possible he was a middle at 14yrs of age. I agree that in two yrs a teenager could easily put on 14-20 lbs, but was Clay really a Middle at 14. At 16 a light heavy, and stayed a light heavy until 18. It doesn't add up....

If Clay was 6ft at 14, it's easily possible he was a middleweight.

And the guy was naturally big, I mean he never ever lifted weights and trained for long hours every day yet weighed 215-220.

I always understood it that Clay was just stopped once.

Why are you not convinced of this?

I guess because 14 being so young and Clay who himself always said he was a skinny kid and the fact that while big later on, he was not a massive Heavyweight surely was not 75 Kg at 14. That's preety damn big for that age. I would have said he was more 10 stone, then 75 at say 16-17 and then within 18 months he went to the Olympics at LH. It just does not seem like the natural progression for a young boxer.

165 is big for 14?

At 14 I fought at 185.

15 - 178

At 16 just yesterday I fought at 201.

Ali ko'd?

Post by Ken »

Kent Green of Chicago was one of 7 or 8 times Ali was beaten in amatuers by stoppage. Amos Johnson of Akron, Jimmy Ellis, Louisville and an Australian Tony Esperti? Got that wrong I am sure. Holmes only one as a pro to stop him. Willie Moran sounds like the name of the guy who beat Jack Dempsey 2x in pro's.

I've read that two of Greg Page's uncles fought Muhammad Ali during his amateur career.Maybe it was them.

Willy Moran vs Cassius Clay

Post by Venceremos »

Interview with Joe Martin talking about Cassius Clay:

"Only once did I ever see him knocked out, knocked cold, and that was in the gymnasium, working out with an amateur named Willy Moran. Moran was a good hitter. Later he turned pro. Anyway, he really flattened Cassius that day. Cassius had been talking to me about wanting a scooter, and when he regained consciousness, he said to me, 'Mr. Martin, which way was that scooter going that hit me?' The scooter was on his mind. That was the only time I ever saw him knocked cold, and it didn't faze him. He was back working out with Moran again the next day."
