Daniel Dubois, Joe Joyce Set For Interim-Bouts Ahead of October Fight

Heavyweight rivals Daniel Dubois and Joe Joyce will both headline behind-closed-doors shows ahead of their planned clash in October.

The London duo will both face German opposition as part of Frank W’s Queensberry Promotions summer series of shows to be screened on BT Sport from the channel’s studios on East London.

Joyce will face Michael Wallisch, from Munich, on July 25. The 34-year-old, who is 6ft 5½in tall, won his first 19 fights as a professional, but has lost three of his past four, being stopped by Christian Hammer, Efe Ajagba and Tony Yoka, who controversially beat Joyce in the Olympic final in 2016.

Dubois, the British and Commonwealth champion, will take on unbeaten two-time Olympic Erik Pfeifer.

The Russian-born 33-year-old has only had seven fights as a professional. He twice won bronze medal at the World Amateur Championships, in 2011, when he lost his semi-final to Anthony Joshua, and 2013. He boxed at the 2012 and 2016 Olympics and boxed four seasons in the World Series Boxing, where he twice beat Yoka.

In total, Queensberry will be staging five behind-closed-doors shows, beginning this Friday when Brad Foster puts his British and Commonwealth super-bantamweight titles against James Beech Jr. Dubois-Pfeifer will be the final show.

None of the cards will clash with Eddie Hearn’s Fight Camp shows, which will be screened in the UK on Sky and run on Saturday nights from August 1 until August 22.

Dubois and Joyce are set to clash on October 24 at the O2 Arena, London, providing the lockdown has sufficiently lifted to allow crowds back to events by then.

They had originally been due to meet in April and then July, before the coronavirus pandemic put paid to that.

While Dubois boxed in December, Joyce has not been in action since beating Bryant Jennings in July last year, having also seen a proposed fight with Marco Huck in January fall through.

It was the lengthy absence that led to Joyce’s team to push for a warm-up fight before agreeing to the October date.

On the August 29 Dubois-Pfeifer undercard, IBF super flyweight champion Sunny Edwards (14-0, 4 KOs) defends against Thomas Essomba (10-5, 4KO’s).

The undercard that night is stuffed full of mouthwatering domestic battles, as Sam Maxwell (13-0, 11KO’s) defends his WBO European Super-Lightweight Championship against former European Champion Joe Huges (17-5-1, 7KO’s) and Willy Hutchinson (10-0, 6KO’s) returns in Light Heavyweight action against Clitheroe’s Luke Blackledge (26-9-2, 9KO’s).

Featherweight Muhammad Ali (1-0) will make his second professional appearance on the show.

Nice to see! Dubois' opponent is much better than Joyce's, but the Englishman should win this fairly easily I imagine...

DUBOIS HAPPY TO WAIT TO KO JOE

Dubois, 22, said: “The delay until October for the fight against Joe has given me more time to get things right and the Pfeifer fight is a bonus.

“It’s a shame that fans can’t attend, but I’m not moaning. A lot of fighters aren’t going to get work for months.

“Hopefully Joe does the business on Wallisch and we give fans something to look forward when we finally meet later in October.

“It’s great to have an outing so I can blow away the cobwebs. When fight night comes it will have been more than seven months since my last contest. I’ve never had a layoff that long since I started boxing.

“I want to deliver a big performance and then it will be all systems go to KO Joe in October.”

Russian-born Pfeifer, 33, turned professional in September 2018. He last fought in November, and picked up the WBO European crown when Adnan Redzovic retired after five rounds.

The Hamburg man represented Germany at the 2012 and 2016 Olympics. He won a bronze medal at the 2011 World championships losing against Anthony Joshua in the semi-final.

Two years later he claimed another World championship bronze. He also boxed in the World Series of Boxing and defeated French star Tony Yoka. Pfeifer has also been crowned the Super-Heavyweight (91+ kg) championship in AIBA Pro Boxing (APB) .

He will provide a good test, but Dubois warned: “Everyone knows how serious I am.

“Through lockdown I haven’t stopped training at home with my brother and sister. There was no messing.

“As soon as we were allowed to go into the gym I was back with my trainer Martin Bowers, and being in a familiar environment makes things more comfortable.

“allegedly told me a while back there might be a chance of a fight on a TV studio show, and when the chance came I didn’t hesitate.

“Pfeifer has come along at relatively short notice, but we have more than enough time to prepare.”

And with the Pfeifer fight his biggest immediate concern, there will be little thought of Joyce for now.

“It is no concern of mine how he looks in his warm-up. I just have to concentrate on myself and not worry about his performance.”

Interesting fight, kinda one I wasnt expecting at all. On the surface Dub should blow him out and I think that will happen cause Dubster is a stud, but Pfiefer had a deep and pretty successful amateur and wsb background an despite only 7 pro fights is well beyond that in reality for experience and could probably be guided to prospect or fringe contender level himself with more time

Eri is well suited to Dubby I think, on the small side, well schooled but pretty basic and come forward, and doesnt seem particularly durable, got KOd by smallish non puncher Andrey afonin and also stopped in wsb

basically I think Pfiefer will just walk into big shots eventually and be hurt pretty quickly when they get there, but he knows his way around the ring (not in a yussy mack way)and could cause some issues if Dub isn't taking it seriously

Bit of a strange one by Pfiefers team, with his amateur background and The current lack of elite fighters in Germany He would be one to build.

Sending him overseas to fight Dubois after 7 fights. Either they have great faith in him or none at all.

I'd say none. Wonder what he's getting paid for being ko'd.

Dude is 33 , long am career, only 7 pro fights and with no hype. Already got miles on the clock and would be a long road to anything substantial at his rate before this, so maybe they see it as the best chance to make a big leap in a short time. a gamble that he might as well take

Wouldn't be surprised if he retires if he loses

Or just a decent payday before he goes off.

His best payday, his biggest shot to boost his career. Vs more irrelevant fights and years of obscurity when he's already 33.

Yup. Although I can't believe his camp thinks he's got a shot. Dubs' handlers wouldn't take any risk before Joyce.

How much do you think he’s been paid? Can’t be more than £10 grand surely. Or maybe £25k I have no idea what sort of purse he would accept

Pfeiffer is pretty ordinary from what I’ve seen. He’ll show some heart but I expect him to be taken out inside 6.
