Heavyweights: Tommy Morrison vs Jerry Quarry

Post by scorpio83 »

15 Rounds Heavyweight Bout

Either the Duke decision Bobby Quarry's more famous big bro or late round stoppage on a cut or Jerry Quarry out-boxed the Duke with counters to either decision him or late round stoppage? What do you guys think and would it be competitive if they fought in their prime?

Morrison would outbox Quarry. Yeah, maybe he would score the stoppage in the late rounds, probably on cuts. Tommy was bigger, stronger and more polished as a boxer. Quarry was tougher and more durable, but still measured and well-prepared Morrison would be too much for him.

Neither had great stamina, so there could be a lot of action early.
Quarry was a much better boxer than Morrison and could be content to simply win on points. However, he liked to brawl as well, which would give Morrison a chance. Morrison had more power but Quarry had a much better chin.

Hard to say what kind of fight wold develop, but Quarry would win this more often than not.

My buddy and I debated this last century when Tommy was coming up. He thought Tommy was too big. I went with Quarry by decision.

Morrison by KO. At some point Quarry will want to stand his ground with Morrison and would get left hooked into oblivion.

Maybe. But going toe toe would not necessary favor Morrison. His chin was shaky. It would be Morrison's best chance though.

Real good matchup.

I think Quarry could wind up dragging Morrison into a brawl, wearing him out and stopping him late, but I wouldn't be shocked at Tommy outboxing him either.

I would be shocked if Morrison outbox Quarry. Watch the younger Quarry and you will see a guy who was a decent boxer. He gradually became more of a brawler later on. Morrison's entire boxing reputation is based on running from an ancient Foreman. He was no boxer. His best chance would be to try to go toe to toe and hope for the best.
