Press Release

Let the countdown begin. Boxing on DAZN is back in one week with the return of the future of boxing and knockout artist, Vergil Ortiz Jr. (15-0, 15 KOs). The 2019 consensus “Prospect of the Year” faces his most dangerous challenger to date when he meets Samuel Vargas (31-5-2, 14 KOs) next Friday, July 24, live from California and exclusively on DAZN at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT.

Sharing the spotlight with the Vergil Ortiz Jr. will be undefeated prospects Seniesa Estrada (18-0, 7 KOs) and Hector Tanajara Jr. (19-0, 5 KOs) – both looking to stamp themselves as title contenders in their respective weight divisions.

As part of the countdown to boxing’s return on DAZN, tomorrow night (8 p.m. ET) Ortiz Jr. will break down his 2019 scrap against Antonio Orozco on DAZN’s weekly series, Saturday Fight Live. Watch a sneak peek now.

Golden Boy, DAZN, and Fantasy Springs Resort Casino are proud to announce the return of world-class professional boxing in Southern California! In the main event of this long-awaited comeback, Vergil Ortiz Jr. (15-0, 15 KOs) will defend his WBA Gold Welterweight Title against Samuel Vargas (31-5-2, 14 KOs) in a 12-round bout.

The action takes place on Friday, July 24, at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino in Indio, Calif. and will be streamed live on DAZN. The event will be closed to the public and media as we enter the first phase of our responsible return to regular boxing action.

“Preparing our comeback hasn’t been easy, but we know that we have a responsibility to our fighters and our fans to stage high-level boxing events as soon as we possibly can,” said Oscar De La Hoya, Chairman, and CEO of Golden Boy. “This card demonstrates our commitment to presenting competitive fights despite current circumstances as the future of boxing, Vergil Ortiz Jr., will step into the ring with Samuel Vargas as was initially planned back in March.”

“And to add to that, lightweight contender Hector Tanajara Jr. is taking a big step up in competition against a veteran southpaw in Mercito Gesta,”
De La Hoya continued. “Times may be tough, but our fighters are tougher, so I want to thank them for accepting these challenges during this time. I also want to thank the CSAC, Fantasy Springs Resort Casino, DAZN and everyone involved as we work together to make this a success.”

Since debuting as a professional in 2016, Ortiz Jr. has knocked out every opponent in sight. The native of Grand Prairie, Texas, who has roots in Michoacan, Mexico, will participate in his first fight of the year after a spectacular 2019 in which he stopped the likes of Mauricio “El Maestro” Herrera, Antonio “Relentless” Orozco, and Brad “King” Solomon. The 22-year-old contender is a bit surprised because his 2020 debut will take place as late in the year as July, but he is nevertheless prepared for the challenge.

“I’m very thankful and excited to be headlining the first Golden Boy event after the quarantine,” said Vergil Ortiz. “I’m happy that it’s still with the same opponent, so we’re picking up where we left off. It’s going to be a tough fight, and it’ll be a great way to kick off the year for me.”

Vargas is recognized as one of the toughest challenges in any division. The 31-year-old native of Bogota, Colombia, has faced a who’s who of welterweight boxers, including Amir “King” Khan, Luis Collazo, Danny “Swift” Garcia and Errol “The Truth” Spence Jr. Despite the uncertainty facing the world today, Vargas is confident that he will beat Ortiz Jr.

“I’m happy to be back to work training in Las Vegas,” said Samuel Vargas. “I think that everything happens for a reason. I think this time off benefited me. I’m ready to upset the world. I believe I can come out with a win. The world is in a weird place right now. The show will be different. There will be no fans. But I do not doubt that I am going to win.”

In the co-main event, Hector “El Finito” Tanajara Jr. (19-0, 5 KOs) will take a step up in opposition as he takes on two-time world title challenger Mercito “No Mercy” Gesta (32-3-3, 17 KOs) of Cebu, Philippines in a 10-round defense of the USNBC Lightweight Title.

“I’m ready for the best of the division,” said Hector Tanajara Jr. “I want to be a world champion, and the only way to do that is to beat tough fighters like Mercito Gesta, who has challenged for a world title and is a southpaw with a lot of experience. Also, I’m very thankful to be fighting during this time. Boxing is slowly coming back, and I’m proud to be featured on the first Golden Boy card after the big hiatus.”

“I am so excited to fight on July 24 against a talented, young, and very technical boxer in Hector Tanajara Jr,”
said Mercito Gesta. “During the pandemic, I was doing conditioning training virtually with my team in San Diego, but now I am in Los Angeles training with Coach Marvin Somodio and my dad at the Wild Card Boxing gym. Even though the fight will be different this time because there will be no audience, friends, or family, I’m well prepared and will put on a great show against Tanajara Jr. I hope everyone watches this card around the world, especially in my hometown of Mandaue City, Cebu, Philippines, as Golden Boy boxing is back! Salamat, Mabuhay!”

Shane Mosley Jr. (15-3, 9 KOs) of Pomona, Calif. will make his debut under the Golden Boy banner in an eight-round middleweight bout against veteran Jeremy Ramos (11-8, 2 KOs) of Colorado Springs, Colorado.

World champion Seniesa “Superbad” Estrada (18-0, 7 KOs) of East Los Angeles, Calif. will return to the 108-pound division against a soon-to-be-announced opponent.

Hector Valdez (12-0, 8 KOs), the newly signed super bantamweight prospect of Dallas, Texas, will participate in a six-round fight.

Hard-hitting welterweight prospect Evan Sanchez (7-0, 6 KOs) of Parlier, Calif, will open the night of action in a six-round fight.

Ortiz vs. Vargas is a 12-round fight for the WBA Gold Welterweight Title presented by Golden Boy. Hennessy sponsors the event, “Never Stop. Never Settle.” The event will take place Friday, July 24, at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino and will be streamed live exclusively on DAZN.

Welterweight Vergil Ortiz Jr., the heavy-hitting 2019 ESPN prospect of the year, will make his 2020 debut against battle-tested veteran Samuel Vargas on March 28, Golden Boy Promotions announced on Saturday.

The scheduled 12-round bout, which had been agreed to for the past couple of weeks but is now signed, will take place at The Forum in Inglewood, California, and headline a DAZN card.

"When people think of the future of the welterweight division, one name stands out, and that's Vergil Ortiz Jr.," Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya said. "Simply put, this kid is special. His talent, speed and power set him apart from any other fighter who is moving up the 147-pound rankings."

Ortiz (15-0, 15 KOs), who will turn 22 on March 25, stormed to 2019 prospect of the year honors with four knockouts last year, including three in a row against elevated levels of opposition. He stopped former world title challengers Mauricio Herrera in the third round and Antonio Orozco in the sixth round, and finished the year with a fifth-round knockout of Brad Solomon on Dec. 13. None of the three had ever previously been knocked out.

"I'm excited to be returning against Samuel Vargas," Ortiz said. "He's a tough fighter with a lot of experience, so I know that my talent and skills are going to be put to a tough test. I'm also happy to be fighting in Los Angeles at such a historic venue where many legends in the sport have fought. I love this city, and I love the people here, so I'm going to work very hard to perform to the best of my abilities on March 28."

The extremely experienced Vargas (31-5-2, 14 KOs), 30, a Colombia native based in Toronto, will be next to see whether he can handle the young gun. Vargas' losses have generally come only against top opponents such as Errol Spence Jr., Amir Khan, Danny Garcia and Luis Collazo.

"Throughout my career, I have always taken the challenges that other fighters in the division don't want, and that's exactly what I'm doing again," Vargas said. "Vergil Ortiz Jr. is one of the brightest young stars in boxing, but he hasn't had to go through a war yet. I've shown that I'm willing to go through hell in that ring, so if Ortiz is everything he's hyped up to be, he better be on point March 28 because I know I will."

In the co-feature, junior welterweight brawler Pablo Cesar Cano (33-7-1, 23 KOs), 30, of Mexico, will defend his regional belt against Michael Perez (25-3-2, 11 KOs), 30, of Newark, New Jersey, in a 12-round bout. Perez will be coming off a 15-month layoff.

Also on the card:

▪ Junior featherweight Azat "Crazy A" Hovhannisyan (18-3, 15 KOs), 31, an Armenia native fighting out of Los Angeles, will face Jose Sanmartin (30-5-1, 20 KOs), of Colombia, for a vacant interim world title. Hovhannisyan has won four fights in a row since he dropped a unanimous decision challenging junior featherweight world titlist Rey Vargas for his belt in May 2018. Sanmartin has also won four fights in a row since a 12th-round knockout loss in June 2018 to Emanuel Navarrete, who went on to win a junior featherweight world title.

▪ Welterweight Rashidi "Speedy" Ellis (22-0, 14 KOs), 26, of Lynn, Massachusetts, will defend his regional belt against Sergio Ortega (21-2, 15 KOs), 25, of Mexico, in a 10-rounder.

▪ Interim women's flyweight world titlist Seniesa "Superbad" Estrada (18-0, 7 KOs), 27, of East Los Angeles, California, will make her first defense against an opponent to be determined. Estrada won the vacant interim belt by ninth-round technical decision over 2012 U.S. Olympic bronze medalist Marlen Esparza on the Canelo Alvarez-Sergey Kovalev undercard on Nov. 2.

Boxers react to fight cancellations and share future plans

Vergil Ortiz, welterweight, scheduled to fight Samuel Vargas on March 28 in Inglewood, California: I was reading some stuff about it. I was at the gym [Thursday] when I found out. It's disappointing because I had a long training camp -- we were very excited for this fight. I was fighting in L.A., headlining in L.A. in a historic venue, I was really looking forward to it. It was going to be a great fight. Hopefully it's just postponed for a couple of weeks, and we'll be right back at it.

Samuel Vargas, welterweight, scheduled to fight Vergil Ortiz on March 28 in Inglewood, California: I was bummed out, what can I say? I was just finishing my workout at the gym and the trainer had just seen it online and didn't want to tell me. So I said, "Just tell me, man." I noticed that the NHL, the NBA was canceled, so I knew it was only going to be a matter of time, when everyone was taking drastic measures.

Shane Mosley Jr. faces Jeremy Ramos on Vergil Ortiz-Samuel Vargas card

After an extended break, Shane Mosley Jr. is ready to extend his winning streak on July 24 when he takes on Jeremy Ramos.

The bout will take place on the undercard of the Vergil Ortiz Jr.- Samuel Vargas main event, as the undefeated welterweight puts his “0” on the line at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino in Indio, California, live on DAZN.

Mosley has won two consecutive fights since getting outpointed by middleweight contender Brandon Adams in the season five finale of “The Contender.”

“Camp has been going really great,”
Mosley said. “I’ve been working with my strength and conditioning coach Larry Wade, as well as my head trainer Justin Gamber, and we have been getting everything in order for our first fight with Golden Boy.”

The promotional company signed Mosley, the son of former three-division world champion and 2020 International Boxing Hall of Fame inductee “Sugar” Shane Mosley Sr., to a co-promotional deal back in February.

Mosley (15-3, 9 knockouts), 29, of Pomona, California, was set to face Abraham Cordero in an eight round contest on April 25 at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino in Indio, Calif., on the undercard of the light heavyweight main event between former three-time titleholder Sergey Kovalev and Sullivan Barrera. But due to the coronavirus pandemic, the card, as well as many others across the globe, were postponed or canceled.

“You know, that really was a bummer,” Mosley said. “Postponements and cancellations happen all the time. You never know when they’re going to come, but these circumstances were unlike any other.”

While some fighters may not see it from the same lens, Mosley saw it as an opportunity to rest his body and spend quality time with family.

“As an athlete, it sucked,” he explained. “But on the other token, it served as just another reminder on what’s important in life. Family comes first.”

Ramos (11-8, 4 KOs), 33, a Puerto Rican journeyman based in Colorado Springs, has lost eight of his last 10 contests, including by seventh-round knockout in his most recent fight last October.

Last week, California Gov. Gavin Newsom ordered massive swaths of California’s economy to close once again due to an increase in the spread of COVID-19, which included gyms, restaurants, and a plethora of other establishments.

When asked if the new executive order has had any adverse effect on his training, Mosley said it is just “business as usual.”

“Everything is good here,” he continued. “I’m just trying to focus on my fight and doing the best that I possibly can to perform at the highest level in the ring.

“As far as everything else that is happening (in the state of California), I’m not too worried about that – I can’t be worried. Boxing is serious business. I’m taking things one day at a time and on July 24th, we’ll be ready to get ourselves another win.”

DAZN Weigh-In Report From Indio

All boxers made weight for the show, which did lose one bout due to non-coronavirus related illness.

Ortiz (15-0, 15KOs) needed two tries and the services of a towel as a shield in order to hit the mark. The 22-year old knockout artist from Grand Prairie, Texas hit the 147-pound welterweight limit immediately after stripping down to his birthday suit after initially weighing in at 147.2 pounds in stylish underwear.

Vargas (31-5-2, 14KOs) vows to represent the roadblock between Ortiz and the welterweight title stage. The 31-year old from Toronto, Canada by way of Bogota, Colombia weighed 146.6 pounds for his first fight in more than a year. Vargas rebounded from a hard-fought 10-round split decision defeat at the hands of former welterweight titlist Luis Collazo last March to edge out veteran journeyman Silverio Ortiz last June.
--------------------------
Bumped up to the chief support, second generation boxer Shane Mosley Jr. collides with Colorado-based Boricua journeyman Jeremy Ramos in an eight-round middleweight contest.

Mosely (15-3, 9KOs)—the son of Hall of Fame former three division champion Shane Mosley—arrived at a trim and fit 159.4 pounds. Colorado Springs’ Ramos (11-8, 8KOs)—a full-time barber when not training—came in right at the 160-pound middleweight limit.

Seniesa Estrada was also due to appear on the March 28 card which never saw the light of day as the East Los Angeles product enters her first fight of 2020. It comes versus Topeka, Kansas’ Miranda Atkins in a 10-round battle of unbeaten junior flyweighs.

Estrada (18-0, 7KOs) hit the scale at a fight ready pounds 107.8 pounds, while Atkins (5-0, 5KOs) checked in at 106.8 pounds

Unbeaten prospect Hector Valdez (12-0, 8KOs) checked in at 121.6 pounds for his eight-round junior featherweight clash versus Josue Morales (11-11-4, 1KO) who tipped the scale at 120.6 pounds.

Evan Sanchez (7-0, 6KOs) weighed 147 pounds for his six-round clash versus Issouf Kinda (18-4, 7KOs), who weighed 144.6 pounds for the opening bout of the livestream.

Gesta Out Due To Food Poisoning, Tanajara Left Off July 24 DAZN Show

The first show to take place in California in more than four months will now carry one less fight.

Mercito Gesta (32-3-3, 17KOs) was forced to withdraw from his scheduled July 24 lightweight clash with San Antonio’s Hector Tanajara (19-0, 5KOs). Their bout was to serve as the evening’s chief support, but was removed after Philippines’ Gesta went down for the count after a battle with food poisoning which began Wednesday evening.

ESPN.com's Steve Kim was the first to report the development.

He's 15 KO's in 15 fights..

You think he steps on the gas and stops Vargas?

He can be durable.. But then again has been dropped as well.

vet move to tackle ortiz, avoid a knockdown and get some time.. the stop was probably fair but a bit rough when theres only 2 seconds left in a round and your not staggered. vargas was talking fine, had his balance, just freaky tough human, his only chance at winning was ortiz punching himself out, so i mean it would of been nice to see how ortiz looked going back to his corner after that onslaught. but yea, ortiz is good and all, but mabey he dosent hit quite as hard as people are sugesting.

Vargas was getting battered, it had to be stopped. The guys who can continue to take a beating without being sparked are the most worrisome

i thought he was defo staggered and hurt...the tackle didnt come out of nowhere, his legs were not good and he was stumbling foward

Vargas was tough as hell... took his beating and asked for more... Started to hold and Jack called him out on it... Vargas tried to verbally defend himself and Jack replied back "bullshit!!"...

In the end the ref protected Vargas from his own unhealthy toughness

Yea, i think he was then, and if they stopped it there i wouldent of minded.. i still dont mind this stoppage, but i think he had recovered pretty well by when it was stopped. like, the second it was stopped he was on stedy feet talking to the ref fine, walked to his corner, explained to them he was fine. He was by no means 100%, but i honestly think his only chance at winning was something like that to happen. ortiz get too excited, go for the kill, and not quite get it, then not be able to recover and get pushed deep with heavy lactat acid arms.. still very unlikely thing to happen, but i think it was his best shot.
