Anthony Joshua warns Mike Tyson: We’re bigger, we’re stronger

Post by Enlightened-One »

"Anthony Joshua warns Mike Tyson: We’re bigger, we’re stronger"

AJ says boxing has changed since Mike Tyson dominated the heavyweight division in the 1980s and 1990s. Today’s heavyweights are younger, bigger, and more durable than the guys in Tyson’s era, says Joshua.

“To someone watching from home, it looks like this guy is going to come and rule the heavyweight division,” said Joshua to Sky Sports on Mike Tyson’s video workouts that he’s been posting on social media.

“It’s what they’ve known. Good luck to them both, it’s all they know. They haven’t got to do it to compete with the young lions in the division now.

“We’re bigger, we’re stronger, sports science has improved so there is more technology,” said Joshua.

“The whole sporting world has kind of developed,” said Joshua. “If Mike Tyson wants to come back and fight someone from his era for the love of the sport, crack on, I wish them well.”

Well they aren’t younger. He‘s right about the sports science side, it’s the same in all sports.

How much has sports science changed in the last quarter of a century?

I can't imagine that Tyson's training regimen was that much different from Joshua's.

I could understand if Tyson fought 100 years ago, but he was still fighting inside the last 20 years.

I understand there have been improvements in sports science, but I think Joshua is over estimating them a little bit.

Let’s consider a couple of facts, based on the date of Tyson’s exhibition against Jones Jr. on the 12th September…

• Mike Tyson was in his prime 32½ years ago, which was when he scored the first-round stoppage over Michael Spinks
• Mike Tyson’s most recent victory over a top-ten world-rated heavyweight occurred 24½ years ago, which was another first-round KO, but this time over Bruce Seldon

So in reality, if we’re considering prime Tyson versus today’s heavyweights, we’re actually referring to a much greater timescale than twenty years.

You’re welcome to understate the time difference, if you feel it somehow strengthens your stance, but in reality, a lot can change in 32½ years.

Anyway, here's Mike Tyson's own thoughts on the same matter, which was when he was asked if he was capable at his prime of defeating the Klitschkos.

I don’t know [if I could beat them]. You know, if I’m in the ring with someone, my intentions is to beat them, to hurt them…

In reality, even though we don’t want to believe it, athletes get better as time goes on. They don’t get worse.”

“They may not look better, they get better, they’re bigger, they do better vitamins… It’s just a whole different game compared to when I was fighting.”

We didn’t have the vitamins, we didn’t have the muscle juice that everyone has now… none of that stuff!

Simply put, Anthony Joshua and Mike Tyson share the same opinion. They clearly don’t disagree.

Lol "sports science." Imagine Mike Tyson getting knocked around by Andy Ruiz or a 41 year old Wlad Klitschko. Imagine Tyson having to run from a 300lb Ruiz all night in a rematch.

Set up to a joke I don't have a punch line for: How many sports scientists does it take to change a fighter's chin?

Here's what Anthony Joshua actually said: “We’re bigger, we’re stronger, sports science has improved so there is more technology,”

And here's what Mike Tyson stated about heavyweights in more recent eras: “...they get better, they’re bigger, they do better vitamins…”

Your witty remark clearly excludes size and strength. And you're in denial if you honestly believe that training methods and sports science hasn't improved over the last 32½ years.

Anyway, let's not pretend that during Mike Tyson's heyday, he and his opponent's were anything other than the equivalent of modern-day rehydrated cruiserweights.

Who gives a crap what a 50 year old indifferent Mike Tyson with zero testosterone says? When he was young and savage he would laugh at an opponent like Joshua, and lick his lips at the thought of attacking him.

First of all, you quoted a post that contained lots of facts, but you cherry-picked only one of them, because you couldn't undermine anything else I'd written.

And if you're trying to mock the accuracy of my claims, Mike Tyson NEVER defeated Andrew Golota.

Do you think I'm wrong? Seriously? Do you really want to argue about this? :OhYes: :TU:

Your overall point is stupid but you were hanging your argument off a factual inaccuracy (again). Everyone on the forum has seen Tyson squash the top 10 ranked Golota. The commission later calling it an NC because he failed a marijuana test doesn't mean it "NEVER" happened. It did happen. We all saw it happen. Once again you don't understand words, and make clumsy attempts to save face with sophistries. Grow up, idiot.

if it isn't already clear, to new participants or the terminally fvcking stupid, when EO does his little threads and puts 'thoughts?' at the end, he isn't really asking for your 'thoughts' at all, or at least not in the sense that he's interesting in what you have to say, other than for one very specific reason; he just wants something, anything to argue with. He's just trying to premeditate an endless argument that fighters are bigger now and everything in the world progresses plus sports science and special vitamins therefore Joshua beats tyson FACTS FACTS FACTS and we're going to end up with the same old 8 page thread of the same tired sh1tty arguments and FFS CAN'T YOU FVCKING SEE THIS??!!

It is an irrefutable FACT that the Tyson-Golota fight was declared a no-contest. Nobody officially won that bout!

You can stutter, pretend I’m lying and keep saying “but, but, but…” over-and-over again, because it doesn’t change a damn thing!

You pretended that one of my claims was factually-inaccurate, but this was a blatant lie, wasn’t it? What I wrote is correct, even if you don't want it to be!

You can’t rewrite the course of history and pretend that specific real-world facts don’t exist!

Oh I don't come on Current Scene very often so was unaware of his MO. Last time I was on here he didn't understand what the word "reign" meant and made all sorts of convoluted attempts to save face. No problem with him having an opinion I don't agree with--it's the avuncular tone I find laughable, given how stupid he clearly is.

Anyway, noted. Thank you for the tip off.

I don't think there's anything unreasonable to point out the fact that Tyson's prime was 32½ years ago, not twenty years ago.

And I didn't think it was inappropriate to share Mike Tyson's own thoughts on the matter either.

I certainly wasn't aggressive with Syntax.

I'll concede I was slightly less friendly towards Onamastus though, because he was hostile.

You're being aggressive and I haven't done a damn thing to you in this thread. You've only submitted an irrelevant comment in order attack me.

And don't you think you're being a hypocrite for behaving in that manner, considering the nature of your criticism aimed towards me?

People just can’t help themselves

There’s something inherent in all of us that just can’t let EO’s bullshit slide , but it’s worth remembering that so few people agree with him on these sorts of topics that letting him babble away to an empty room is probably the way to go.

Says me, contributing to his thread

Serious suggestion: Maybe he could have a colour coding next to his posts advising that while replying is not prohibited, the best course of action is not to encourage him. This system could be applied to any poster who is democratically voted by boxrec users as befitting such a system.

Isn't it ironic that the same people criticising me, as well as boasting about how they keep ignoring my posts, whilst instructing everyone else to follow suit, but yet they themselves just can't resist submitting posts to my threads?

Nearly all of my posts list facts, not opinions, but for some reason... people feel compelled to disagree with "me".

For instance, I haven't expressed a personal opinion in this thread, simply quoted the words of AJ and Tyson, as well as detail accurate timescales, yet people insist on arguing with me and pretending that I'm somehow "WRONG"!

The sentiments of Joshua and Tyson are theirs. There's nothing me or anyone else can do about the dates and timescales because they are what they are.

So why are people so offended about my conduct in this thread? Are facts really so offensive?
