Re: Topic/Sticky to be Deleted

Post by Alex »

Ric wrote:I plan to "scavenge" the material posted in this sticky thread, and put the data into BoxRec Encyclopedia pages. The BoxRec 'Pedia has a "Venues & Clubs" category. So, as a moderator here, I plan to delete this sticky topic in the near future, as being unnecessary now--unless I hear objections before then.
Just a suggestion Ric, but with the vast number of fight venues that were around in the old days, it might be an idea to keep this thread going, so contributors can add the venue details as and when they find them.

Maybe you could delete the various posts, as the venues are added to the Encyclopedia and put a note on here asking people to check the Encyclopedia first before posting venue details on this thread - so that time is not wasted on venues that are already listed.

In some boxrec records fighters are listed as having fought at the London Casino, as well as the Queensbury Club in Soho, London. These were actually the same venue. See this link:

http://www.allinlondon.co.uk/prince-edward-theatre.php (I'll copy/paste the info below in case the website disappears)

What should the catch-all be? "Queensbury Club, London Casino, Soho, London"?

Prince Edward Theatre

Address: Old Compton Street, London, W1D 4HS

Designed by Edward Stone and with a capacity of more than sixteen hundred- the Prince Edward Theatre was opened in April 1930. The theatre was originally designed to be a multi purpose venue- hosting musicals, revue and movies. The building was chosen as the site for the London Casino which opened in 1936. The building was then converted to a cabaret restaurant- and gamblers and diners alike enjoyed spectacular stage shows.

During WWII the theatre became a club for servicemen and was renamed ‘The Queensbury All Services Club.’ After the war some of the musicals and revue shows returned to the Prince Edward- they stayed until to theatre was converted again in 1954 the show ‘Cinerama’ movies.

The Prince Edward Theatre recalled its name and former purpose in 1978 when the celebrated musical ‘Evita’ began an eight year run. Since then the Prince Edward has staged various musicals including ‘Chess’, ‘Anything Goes’ and ‘Some Like it Hot.’ The theatre underwent a massive refurbishment in 1992 and now boasts air conditioning, disabled access and a new sound system. There can be few Theatre venues in London that can claim such a varied and illustrious history.

Sharkey's athletic club

Post by sharkeysboy »

Perhaps I just missed it but shouldn't Shakey's Athletic Club be listed as a New York venue. I know of at least two notable fights held there - Gene Tunney's debut and Jim Barry's upset win over Sam Langford (an upset because Sam knocked Barry out in a couple of other fights.) Also, this is the settings for at least two of George Bellows famous paintings - "A Stag at Sharkeys" and "Both Members of the Club." The black fighter in "Both Members of the Club" is supposed to be none other than Joe Gans himself. Sharkey's was a real part of the New York fight scene for decades despite it being decribed in one source as a real dive and a dangerous fire trap. If Sharkey's is listed disregard this email and please direct me to where I can find it. If it's not listed, it should be.

Got on this subject from another thread and I began wondering about the White City in West London. I've seen the capacity for the White City listed as high as 150.000 and it used to be a popular boxing venue. Does anyone know what some of the top attendence figures were here ? I have to believe they would have been some of the largest in the history of Great Britain.

Jock McAvoy vs Len Harvey made the Guiness Book of Records and stood for a very long time (if not still), I believe it was for attendance at a British show and/or first televised event (?).

I seem, however to remember the first televised boxing match was Eric Boon's title fight (?).

Mills vs Woodcock, were big sellers and Savold vs Woodcock at the Whitecity Stadium.

I haven't been able to find it here, maybe it doesn't exist, a thread that has scanned photos of the venues. For example I have a scan of an ad showing the Cleveland Arena that I'd like to post somewhere. Anyone? Thanks.

Those scans should go over to the BoxRec wikipedia.

Sacramento area

Post by knightbox »

The Sacramento Memorial Auditorium. Bobby Chancon and Pete Ranzany used to pack this old arena, the place would rock when these guys fought there. Now fights take place at Arco Arena. I am going on the 11th to watch the Daniel Ponce De Leon vs. Rey Bautista card.

The old Sydney Stadium has already been mentioned, but deserves more cover. It was a circular corrugated iron stadium built in 1908 for the Tommy Burns -v- Jack Johnson fight, the first time a black man became World Heavyweight Champion. It later had a roof put on it and was known affectionately (or otherwise) as the "Old Tin Shed." It was on New South Head Road, Rushcutters Bay near the White City Tennis Courts and Weigall Sportsground, across New South Head Road from Rushcutters Bay Park. As well as boxing it hosted visiting Rock and Roll performers such as Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis and The Beatles in the 1950s and 1960s

A philistine State Government pulled it down in the early 1970s to build a railway that still runs at a loss.
