Summary of Jezzamundo's Dream Heavweight Tournament

Post by jezzamundo »

Using some sort of time travelling device, Jezzamundo was able to transfer 8 of the best heavyweights of all time in their primes to the current day, and they competed in "Jezzamundo's Dream Heavweight Tournament". These fighters were: Muhummad Ali, Joe Louis, Larry Holmes, George Foreman, Rocky Marciano, Joe Frazier, Lennox Lewis and Mike Tyson.

Fights were held using todays rules: 12 rounds, 10 ounce gloves, no standing 8, cannot be saved by the bell.

Each fighter fought 4 times per year, and there was a total of 14 rounds in the tournament, so the tournament lasted for 3 years and 6 months.

The tournament was based on a league system, with the points system below:

Stoppage win: 100 points
UD win: 90 points
MD win: 75 points
SD win: 60 points
Draw: 50 points
SD loss: 40 points
MD loss: 25 points
UD loss: 10 points
Stoppage loss: 0 points

Below is a quick summary of the first round of fights:

Ali TKO10 Tyson - After Tyson managed to tag Ali a couple of times early in the fight, Ali began to take over. Tyson was cut and swollen badly around the eyes and mouth from scores of stinging jabs and fast combinations. Late in the 10th round the referee stepped in and stopped the fight after Tyson took a volley of punches to the head and made no effort to fight back.

Louis KO9 Lewis - Lennox started the fight well, managing to tag Louis consistently with his jab. Both men seemed cautious of each other's power and the fight was looking close. Throughout the middle rounds Lewis seemed to run out of gas and looked content to try to jab and hold his way to a decision, and Louis cashed in, hurting Lewis and winning rounds 6, 7 and 8. Finally in the 9th Louis stepped up his attack, although Lewis managed to avoid the majority of his assault before being hit flush on the chin with a straight right. Lewis went down like a stone and failed to beat the ref's count.

Holmes MD12 Frazier - Holmes had trouble landing his usually great jab, Frazier cramping him for space throughout the fight. Just as he was looking to take over in the 6th, Holmes was trapped on the ropes and took 3 big left hooks from Frazier before going down. He got up, looking wobbly but managed to survive the rest of the round. From the 7th round onward, Holmes recovered well and clearly won the last 4 rounds of the fight as Frazier tired and took several uppercuts. The scorecards read:
114-114, 114-113 Holmes, 114-113 Holmes. Much of the crowd booed the decision.

Foreman KO4 Marciano - This fight looked like a mismatch from the start with Foreman jabbing well and looking huge compared to Rocky. Early in the 2nd Foreman landed series of massive uppercuts that snapped Rocky's head back, but remarkably failed to knock him down. Rocky managed to land a few digging body shots but Big George wore them well. Rocky took more punishment in the 3rd, and was already swelling and bleeding from 2 deep cuts. Early in the 4th after eating a huge uppercut, Rocky took a knee and rose at the count of 8. George proceeded to back Rocky into a corner and land a barrage over uppercuts. Just as the ref looked about to sted in, Rocky slumped to the canvas, looking completely out of it, and was still slumped in the corner as the referee's count reached 10.

Ladder after round 1:
Foreman 100 points
Louis 100 points
Ali 100 points
Holmes 75 points
Frazier 25 points
Tyson 0 points
Lewis 0 points
Marciano 0 points
