Tomasz Adamek and Danny Green weight classes

Post by pugilisticspecialist »

Adamek reached his peak rating at cruiserweight, he should be listed there.
Danny Green reached his peak rating at light heavyweight, he should be listed there.

It is not the peak that a retired fighter is ranked, but rather the average weight of his career, the weight class where he fought most of his fights at.

Surely the all-time ratings should reflect how good fighters were at their peak, in their best weight class?

Not so much about the peak as it is where they had a majority of their accomplishments...?

Guys like Shane Mosley and Pernell Whitaker are ranked way lower in the all-time lb for lb rankings than they would be if they were in their best weight class.

You don't get a good picture of where they actually stand all-time lb for lb.

Yeah, something like that... Former world champ Yoán Pablo Hernández will return for a fight at heavyweight, but if he again retires immediately after, that does not mean he will be ranked at heavyweight. :TU:

That isn't fair on Whitaker or Mosley. They're both set as welterweights, that's two weight classes above their best class, meaning that they're severely underrated in the all-time lb for lb rankings.

All-Time rankings in boxing is near impossible...

The way it is sorted now on BoxRec.. not so great.

You could say.. lets give each boxer credit based on the division in which they were in when said credit happened... But then modern boxers would be at a disadvantage vs. older ones... more weight classes. What do you do with guys like Pacquiao and Mayweather?

You could say.. lets go with that same theory, but group in the old divisions.. then you'd have modern boxers in divisions they spent very little or no time in.

The money and prestige is usually in weight classes above the peak class of the fighter.
Many greats spent a larger part of their career fighting above their peak weight class than in it, e.g. Mosley and Pernell.
They shouldn't be punished for being ambitious and challenging themselves.
It's like BoxRec doesn't have faith in its own algorithm to decide which class a fighter peaked in.
