Adrien Broner: I'll Destroy 135 If I Return To Division; I Can Still Make The Weight
By Manouk Akopyan
Adrien Broner’s on-again, off-again relationship with boxing is apparently on again, as the boxer has plans to come out of retirement.
The inactive 31-year-old Broner (33-4-1, 24 KOs) has danced around the 135, 140 and 147 divisions since 2013, picking and choosing fights in certain classes as his weight outside of training has ballooned.
The next time the former four-division champion steps into the ring, he has plans to drop down a weight class after last fighting Manny Pacquiao as a welterweight in January 2019 during a one-sided loss.
“I want to be world champion again,” Broner told the Wyatt Live podcast. “140, 135 if it’s the right opponent. I’m not playing at 135, but I think my next fight will be at 140. At this point, it doesn’t matter who I fight. I can fight my assistant, and they’re going to see me. They don’t care.
“I’m a natural lightweight, and if I come back to 135, I’ll destroy the weight class because I can still make the weight honestly. Yeah, I can still make the weight. I would have to sacrifice, but I can make it through.”
Broner said he first moved up from 135 to 147 in 2013 when he bested Paulie Malignaggi because “I just know I can beat those guys … if everybody knows, I’m really not a welterweight at all.”
Broner has never lost at 135 pounds. In recent months, he’s been going off on social media against many of the division’s young fighters, challenging the likes of Devin Haney to fights for exorbitant sums of money.
Broner said he currently has a list of five potential opponents to choose from, and Ivan Redkach, who last competed as a welterweight in a loss to Danny Garcia, is one of them.
Broner has his sights set on fighting by the end of 2020.
“If everything opens back up and they open up the arena, then I might fight in December,” said Broner. “If not, then I’m not fighting until 2021. I’d be damned if I’m fighting [without fans]. I can’t because they gotta pay me. If my money is right, they are going to have a hell of a fight. In the second half of my career, it’s going to be everything that I want and the way I want to do it. It’s going to be all my way.”
Broner has not felt the thrill of victory since February 2017 when he sneaked by with a split decision win over Adrian Granados.
He is 0-2-1 in his last three fights, having also lost to Mikey Garcia and fighting to a draw against Jessie Vargas in addition to the Pacquiao defeat.

Can't make the weight, and even if he does. He loses to several guys there.

Adrien Broner is excellent at self-promotion. He makes bold claims, and everyone listens. Those that read or watch his claims might criticise him, but he at least gains their attention.
And despite his apparent lack of success in the sport for the last 6½ years, he somehow manages to attract a disproportionate amount of viewers for his bouts. He continues to be a commercially big name.
Whether you like or loathe him, there’s no denying that he’s good at self-promotion and selling fights. He puts cheeks on seats and compels people to tune in to see him lose.
Put it this way, Broner loses badly against Maidana, but is rewarded with the Porter bout.
He loses badly to Porter, but is rewarded with the Mikey Garcia bout.
He loses badly to Mikey Garcia, but is rewarded with the Jessie Vargas bout.
He was gifted a draw against Vargas and also delivered controversial and offensive post-fight remarks, but is rewarded with the Manny Pacquiao bout.
He loses badly against Manny Pacquiao, temporarily retires, but is likely to be rewarded with another big-money fight at 135lbs or 14lbs.
As bizarre as it sounds, Adrien Broner is phenominally successful at obtaining big paydays.
Whatever he’s doing is obviously working for HIM, regardless as to whatever anyone else thinks!

If someone offered Broner a $3m payday to compete at 135lbs, he'd do so, even if it resulted in him having to go on a drip and falling to the canvas inside the ring from exhaustion as soon as the bell rang to commence the start of the first round.

One day he talks bold, the other one forgets all about it while hustling.

Probably a lot of truth to that.

Is Adrien Broner on the way back to success?
Former four-division champion Adrien Broner, his problems well documented, appears to be training hard and by all accounts is working himself back into shape.
Young Xander Zayas posted apicture of himself with a tired but smiling Broner after a sparring session. Here is what Broner himself posted on Instagram: "Today I ran 6 miles in 54 minutes. It’s not hard to change your life. I went from [being] overweight [by] 57 pounds, [and was] waking up not even drinking water first and taking a shot of 1942 then drinking for the rest of the day. Now I’m waking up one day and telling myself I’m going to change this sh*t and become what I know I can be and that is one of the best boxers ever. I didn’t look back, and now I’m months in and liquor free. I am down over 30 pounds and if you know me, then you know I love to drink but I love my family and money more! I was unhappy and depressed and now I’m not as happy as I want to be but I’m working towards my goals and dreams no matter how hard it may be. I will get there and I never asked for a handout or help! Sometimes you have to do things on your own and you’ll enjoy the results more! I love you all!"

It’s not. It really isn’t rubbish.
If what he claims is true, it proves he’s reasonably fit.
All he needs to have is a decent engine. He probably doesn’t want to be regarded as an advanced sub 50 minute 10K runner.
When boxers go for a jog, they’re not chasing PB times. It’s just about the daily grind and getting the work done.

Re: Adrien Broner: I'll Destroy 135 If I Return To Division; I Can Still Make The Weight
It is. It really is. Anyone who is medium sized and remotely fit can do 10k in under 50 minutes. 6 miles is more like 9.6k as well, so he's looking at over 56 minutes for 10k.Enlightened-One wrote: ↑29 Dec 2020, 07:27It’s not. It really isn’t rubbish.

AJ includes powerlifting compound lifts in his training regimen, but despite being older and lighter than Joshua, I can lift far more than he can.gb wrote: ↑29 Dec 2020, 09:14It is. It really is. Other blokes in my gym can probably do so too.
However, I can’t criticise AJ for this, because he has different goals to me.
He’s probably far better than me in many other fitness areas.
Anyway, we don’t really know if the times and distances Broner mentioned are even his recent PB’s.
And even if it was, then so what? He isn’t being paid to achieve advanced runner status. He just needs to have a decent engine.
We also don’t know Broner’s perceived exertion levels for his runs either either.
Running won’t be his only form of daily exercise.
Re: Adrien Broner: I'll Destroy 135 If I Return To Division; I Can Still Make The Weight
Not only would he not make the weight, but if he somehow did, he'd be so weak that he'd probably lose to every Top 10 opponent he could be matched against.
Re: Adrien Broner: I'll Destroy 135 If I Return To Division; I Can Still Make The Weight
Do you run much? I suspect not, otherwise you'd realise that this is so slow as to be pointless for someone his size.Enlightened-One wrote: ↑29 Dec 2020, 09:24AJ includes powerlifting compound lifts in his training regimen, but despite being older and lighter than Joshua, I can lift far more than he can.gb wrote: ↑29 Dec 2020, 09:14It is. Running won’t be his only form of daily exercise.
It will be doing very little for his engine, which probably explains his low punch output.
I actually wouldn't be surprised if he is just making these numbers up, but doesn't have the intelligence to come up with something that sounds decent but credible.

That’ll give you some context about their perceived effort levels for their runs.
They're obviously not aiming for PB's or achieve advanced runner status. It's all about the engine.
Running won’t be the only form of daily exercise that boxers perform.

Like I said, running very slowly won't help his engine at all. Broner clearly thinks that 6 miles in 54 minutes is decent, otherwise why would he mention it?
10k in 50 minutes is hardly "advanced runner status" (whatever the hell that is) - even 45 minutes is pretty achievable for anyone who does a reasonable amount of general fitness training and runs a couple of times per week.
Re: Adrien Broner: I'll Destroy 135 If I Return To Division; I Can Still Make The Weight
I used to run 6.5 miles every Sunday and I was averaging 65 minutes most of the time, so we should expect that a professional athlete (if Broner can be considered such) is capable of a lot better.gb wrote: ↑29 Dec 2020, 09:14It is. But if Broner is doing that sort of time when he
is out of shape, it is fair to assume that he is capable of going much quicker and in training camp would probably be doing sub 9 minute miles with ease.
Provided that he can commit to a training camp any more, he was never the most disciplined in his prime and he doesn't really sound like a man who is even seriously considering a return at the minute.
Re: Adrien Broner: I'll Destroy 135 If I Return To Division; I Can Still Make The Weight
It’s not slow, especially for a boxer, most boxers I’ve known ran at a steady pace, getting miles in the legs and air in the lungs being more important than times, I do 7 miles in just under an hour and I’m fine with that.gb wrote: ↑29 Dec 2020, 09:39Do you run much? Re: Adrien Broner: I'll Destroy 135 If I Return To Division; I Can Still Make The Weight
The videos I supplied were of boxers running during training camp.
We can look at their attire, their stride length, their faces and also their posture to determine perceived effort levels.
And it's very clear to me that in the videos I supplied, none of the fighters were giving their all... or even remotely close to it.
They were just going through the motions, part of their daily grind during training camp.
