Moore was the pre-fight favourite in that fight, so don't see it as fitting the criteria of a massive step up in class.AntonioMartin wrote: ↑07 Aug 2020, 04:24 Davey Moore vs Roberto Duran even of Moore had beaten Ayub Kalule..

I do..we're talking Roberto Duran here...no one in Moore's record up to that point came close to Duran's class and level.Deserter wrote: ↑07 Aug 2020, 05:26Moore was the pre-fight favourite in that fight, so don't see it as fitting the criteria of a massive step up in class.AntonioMartin wrote: ↑07 Aug 2020, 04:24 Davey Moore vs Roberto Duran even of Moore had beaten Ayub Kalule..
Re: Massive step up in class
There's a reason Moore was the favourite at the time and no-one was talking about him making a massive step up in class. The Duran you're referring to was coming off the back of recent losses to Benitez and Laing, and a couple of underwhelming wins, as well as fighting above his natural weight and being urged to retire by many. You can't ignore historical context.AntonioMartin wrote: ↑07 Aug 2020, 05:39I do..we're talking Roberto Duran here...no one in Moore's record up to that point came close to Duran's class and level.Deserter wrote: ↑07 Aug 2020, 05:26Moore was the pre-fight favourite in that fight, so don't see it as fitting the criteria of a massive step up in class.AntonioMartin wrote: ↑07 Aug 2020, 04:24 Davey Moore vs Roberto Duran even of Moore had beaten Ayub Kalule..
If you follow your logic of looking at level and class as being fixed, you could throw so many in here as to make it meaningless - you'd talk about Spinks beating Ali, McBride beating Tyson etc.

Re: Massive step up in class
You are right and you beat me to putting Spinks-Ali 1 here. But still, no one in Moore's record remotely resembled Duran's class, and also history proved the odd-makers wrong.Deserter wrote: ↑07 Aug 2020, 06:50There's a reason Moore was the favourite at the time and no-one was talking about him making a massive step up in class. Just like no one in Spinks' record was in Ali's (previous at least) class and no one in McBride's record was in Tyson's p;revious class either.
I do agree with your point however, that obviously by then in Ali's and Tyson's case they were nowhere near who they used to be thus they were of a somewhat lowered status then..

Lennox Lewis v Gary Mason.
Mason was 35-0, ranked in the top 5 of the WBC.
Lewis 14-0 and beating the standard trial horses.
Lennox Lewis v Razor Ruddock.
Ruddock was being portrayed as the dangerman of the division based on his 2 scraps (albeit losses) with Iron Mike.
It's one of my most favourite performances ever. Punch perfect, Lewis had absolutely no doubt about what he was going to do.

My favourite ever Lewis performance - he would frustrate me so much at times, but that night he was all business. The Gratest wrote: ↑07 Aug 2020, 08:06 It's one of my most favourite performances ever. Punch perfect, Lewis had absolutely no doubt about what he was going to do.

Eubank Sr said in private that witnessing Duran-Moore as a kid was why he picked Ruiz to beat Joshua in private.

Re: Massive step up in class
I saw that fight thinking that in the minus Tyson era, the Ruddock who went twelve rounds with Mike had the making of a possible future title challenger on a PPV versus Holyfield or Bowe, which i'd happily paid for during my early 20s...and boy did Lewis prove me wrong! The Gratest wrote: ↑07 Aug 2020, 08:06 Lennox Lewis v Gary Mason.

Yeh, it’s like saying Khan vs. Barrera. Was Khan favourite for that?AntonioMartin wrote: ↑07 Aug 2020, 05:39I do..we're talking Roberto Duran here...no one in Moore's record up to that point came close to Duran's class and level.Deserter wrote: ↑07 Aug 2020, 05:26Moore was the pre-fight favourite in that fight, so don't see it as fitting the criteria of a massive step up in class.AntonioMartin wrote: ↑07 Aug 2020, 04:24 Davey Moore vs Roberto Duran even of Moore had beaten Ayub Kalule..
But he had not fought anyone with Barrera’s experience.

Simon Vallily facing Mairis Briedis.
Matchroom have thrown a few in at the deep-end lately due to how wide they’ve cast their net.
Callum Johnson-Artur Beterbiev.
Jason Welborn- Jarrett Hurd
Rocky Fielding- Canelo.

Re: Massive step up in class
I fully understood the Callum Johnson one. With his age and injury layoffs, they had to pull the trigger at some point, even if it was against the beast that is Beterbiev.PredatorHayds wrote: ↑07 Aug 2020, 09:48 Simon Vallily facing Mairis Briedis.

Fielding had no chance against Canelo but I would imagine it was life changing money. You roll the dice, take your lumps and cash the big cheque.
The Welborn one is a mystery though. Not only did he have no business mixing it at that level, but apparently he was paid poorly for the privilege.
