Julio Cesar Chavez Jr vs. Mario Cazares - September 25, 2020

By Miguel Rivera

Mario Cázares (11-0, 5 KOs), 30-years-old, has not had a very active career.

The Mexican super middleweight, who defeated Saul "Canelo" Alvarez in the amateur ranks, did not begin his pro career until December of 2015 - and since then he's only had 11 bouts.

He saw action three times in 2019, with a first round knockout victory in December.

According to former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., Cazares will be his next opponent.

Chavez Jr. is scheduled to return on September 25 in Mexico, as part of a card being put together to raise money for several charities.

In the main event, Mexican greats Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. and Jorge Arce will battle in their third exhibition fight.

Omar Chavez, the younger brother of Julio Jr., will also see action on the undercard.

Chavez Jr. has already issued a warning to Cazares.

“He doesn't know what he got himself into. I am more than ready for that fight, I am on weight and I am ready. I want to display how a boxer behaves and what he represents for society,” Chavez Jr. explained to Fox Deportes.

There is some confusion on whether Chavez Jr. vs. Cazares will be a ten round sanctioned fight or an eight round exhibition.

Chavez Jr. (51-4-1, 33 KOs) has been out of the ring since December of 2019, when he was stopped in five rounds by Daniel Jacobs in a light heavyweight encounter. It was only the second fight for Chavez Jr. since losing a wide decision to Canelo in May of 2017.

At the moment Chavez Jr. is waging a legal battle in the United States to remove a suspension, which was handed down by the Nevada State Athletic Commission for refusing to take a pre-fight drug test in connection to the Jacobs bout.

I’d like to believe that JCC Jr. has something left in the tank, but I don’t.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say whatever he's got left. It's enough for Cazares.

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. vs Mario Cazares Finalized as Official Fight, Sept. 25

The return of Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. has been finalized.

Chavez Jr. will be in a supporting role to the exhibition that involves his father, Julio César Chávez, who is scheduled to face fellow Mexican legend Jorge “Travieso” Arce.

The event is scheduled for Friday, September 25 in Tijuana as part of a live streaming gala where you can buy tickets at superboletos.com

But Chavez Jr. will not take part in an exhibition fight. The contest will be sanctioned as an official contest.

Chavez Jr. (51-4-1, 33 KO's) will face Mario Abel Cazares (12-0, 6 KO's) over ten rounds at light heavyweight, in a duel where fireworks are expected between rivals from the city of Culiacán, Sinaloa.

Chavez Jr. was last in action back in December in Phoenix, where he was stopped in the fifth round by Daniel Jacobs.

Chávez Jr. still wants to fight for a world championship and has decided to share the scheduled card with his father.

His opponent is going through a great moment in his career. Last year, of his three victories, two were achieved by knockout in the first round in spectacular fashion.

Cázares, in his amateur career, defeated Mexican superstar Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez. He's been calling for a showdown with Chavez Jr. and now he has it.

Chávez Jr. has not fought in Tijuana since March 2009, when he defeated Argentine Luciano Leonel Cuello by unanimous decision to become the WBC Latino super welterweight champion before a sold-out crowd at the Playas Bullring.

The clash between Chávez Jr and Mario Cázares will be the headline bout among the official fights. There will also be bouts involving younger brother Omar Chavez, and Arce's young nephew, the undefeated prospect Karim Arce.

JCC Jr. either wins this or needs to hang them up. I wasn’t aware Canelo had much of an amateur career since he turned pro at like 15 or 16 right? Do we know at what age this guy beat Canelo?

Chávez Jr. vs Cazares fight is off

At a virtual press conference, the discussion got heated when Julio Cesar Chavez Sr., boxers Mario Cazares and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., and Mario’s manager couldn’t agree to a weight division. Cazares and his team stood their ground that the fight was going to take place at 172 pounds which was the original agreement. But Chavez Sr. got angry and said that the fight was going to take place at 175 pounds or there will be no fight.

“There will no fight if the contest won’t take place at 175 pounds,” said the Mexican legend. “I am the promoter. Julio Jr is not in charge, I am in charge of this. If the fight doesn’t take place at 175 pounds, Junior won’t fight on my card. Julio Jr had surgery and gained a lot of weight. We moved the original date from October to September 25 so his health is what’s important to me. If Cazares is going to beat him, he would beat him at any weight!”

Cazares and his manager, however, refused to give any concession in weight and traded words with Chavez Sr., insisting that the fight take place at 172.

A few hours after the virtual press conference, Julio César Chávez Jr. tweeted that he was stepping away from his father’s event and the fight with Cazares is now off.

How daft. You'd think they'd work out the weight stips before announcing the fight...

DAZN add Julio Cesar Chavez vs Jorge Arce exhibition and return of Julio Cesar Chavez Jr to schedule

DAZN have added another card to their schedule for this week, picking up U.S. rights to Friday’s card from Tijuana, which will feature Julio Cesar Chavez and Jorge Arce meeting in a third exhibition bout in the main event, plus the return of Julio Cesar Chavez Jr on the card, as well.

The elder Chavez, now 58, has fought the now 41-year-old Arce in a pair of exhibition bouts before. This one will take place behind closed doors, and is really mostly just for the curious. It might possibly give you some idea what to expect before you plunk down money for the Tyson-Jones exhibition in November, which is definitely going to happen, for sure.

The frankly more meaningful fight will be between the 34-year-old junior Chavez (51-4-1, 33 KO), who will face Mario Cazares (11-0, 5 KO) in a 10-round light heavyweight bout. Chavez hasn’t fought since his debacle effort last December against Daniel Jacobs, where he barely got licensed after having to move the fight from Nevada to Arizona in the first place, then badly blew weight and quit after five rounds, starting a ruckus in the crowd where angry spectators got into fights of their own and rained garbage down on anyone near the ring.

A former middleweight titleholder from 2011-12, Chavez’s name has been about the only thing keeping him relevant since he was schooled by Sergio Martinez in 2012. He’s 5-3 since then, but has lost pretty clearly to the three best fighters he’s faced in that time, and even struggled in two of the wins, both over Bryan Vera.

Cazares, 30, is unbeaten but completely untested, never fighting higher than a club level since turning pro in 2015. It will be interesting to see if Chavez bothers to make weight, but with his team pretty much in control of the event, they can really just say the weight is whatever he weighs in at, which is kind of what they tried to do last year with Jacobs, but that was a much bigger event.

Anyway, we’ll have live coverage on Friday, so add it to a busy week, where we’ll have live coverage for six events between Wednesday and Saturday.

Mario Cazares Shocks Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. By Technical Decision

The boxing world now knows Mario Cazares.

The unbeaten but previously anonymous Mexican upset Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. by technical unanimous decision in their light heavyweight fight Friday night at Grand Hotel Tijuana in Tijuana, Mexico. Cazares (12-0, 5 KOs) defeated Chavez (51-5-1, 33 KOs, 1 NC) on all three scorecards once their scheduled 10-rounder was stopped during the sixth round due to a cut above Chavez’s left eye.

Cazares won by scores of 59-54, 57-56, 57-56. He had a point deducted for an intentional head-butt during the second round.

Before beating Chavez, the 30-year-old Cazares had defeated only one opponent with a winning record. That foe, Eduardo Tercero, was 9-8-1 when Cazares knocked him out in the first round of their scheduled eight-rounder last December 15 in Mexico City.

Chavez, whose hair was dyed blonde, fought with blue and brown tape over his back to cover a tattoo. His legendary father, who sat ringside after defeating Jorge Arce in an exhibition on the undercard, probably wanted to cover his eyes after watching his son lose a second straight bout.

The 34-year-old Chavez fought for the first time since quitting on his stool following the fifth round against Daniel Jacobs on December 20 at Talking Stick Arena in Phoenix.

The scheduled 12-round bout between Jacobs and Chavez had become competitive before Chavez declined to answer the bell for the sixth round. Chavez came in 4¾ pounds overweight for what was supposed to a super middleweight bout with Jacobs (36-3, 30 KOs).

What was developing into an action-packed sixth round Friday night came to an abrupt end when an accidental clash of heads opened a nasty gash over Chavez’s left eye. A ringside physician looked at the cut, decided to stop the bout and they went to the scorecards.

Cazares connected with a left uppercut early in the fifth round. Chavez’s hard jab snapped back Cazares’ head later in the fifth.

An accidental head-butt caused a brief break in the action for Chavez to recover during the middle minute of the fourth round. They traded hard shots in the center of the ring later in the fourth.

Cazares’ right hand rocked Chavez early in the third round. That shot made Chavez retreat.

They traded flush left hooks just before the third round ended.

Chavez landed several right hands during the second round, which left Cazares holding at times. Cazares intentionally head-butted Chavez in the second round, which led to a point deduction.

Chavez clipped Cazares with a right hand just before the second round ended.

Chavez and Cazares tied each other up several times during the first round. Cazares connected with a short right hand toward the end of the opening round, but Chavez took it well.

Earlier Friday night, Julio Cesar Chavez Sr., perhaps the most beloved boxer in Mexico’s rich history in the sport, and Arce engaged in an entertaining exhibition DAZN streamed in the U.S.

The 58-year-old Chavez and the 41-year-old Arce wore headgear and T-shirts for their four-round exhibition.

They traded hard body and head shots throughout what amounted to a spirited sparring session. Chavez and Arce each had his moments in the bout, but Chavez was declared the winner.

They had to be separated after the bell rang to end the third and fourth rounds. Arce and Chavez landed punches after each of those two rounds concluded.

Despite those fouls, Chavez and Arce showed sportsmanship and respect toward one another after Chavez had his hand raised.

Chavez Jr: They stopped the fight too early, Cazares just came to hold and foul

After his upset defeat at the hands of Mario Cazares, Julio César Chávez Jr. expressed his thoughts on the outcome of the fight. “I was doing well,” said Chavez Jr. “Mario Cazares is fast, but he was leading with his head. He even gave me a nasty unprofessional headbutt, and he just kept on holding and giving me headbutts.

“It’s impossible for him to win. How could the judges give him the fight? I was putting the pressure and landing the heavier blows. They took a point from him and he still won?

“I’ll fight anybody and if he wants it, we can run it back. It’s not his fault, it’s the referee’s for allowing him to get away with dirty tactics!”

Julio César Chavez Sr stated, “Listen son, that’s the way boxing is. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. You did a great job and we all saw what happened. He is dirty, but it doesn’t matter, let’s move forward and this is in the past already.

“We have big plans in December. I can’t tell you right now, but there’s a big surprise and if Junior is healed from the cut, he can fight on that December card.”
