David Benavidez vs. Roamer Alexis Angulo - August 15, 2020

Post by Ruthless-RKO »

Super middleweight titlist David Benavidez will make his first defense vs. Colombia's Roamer Alexis Angulo at the 5,000-seat Arizona Federal Theater in Benavidez's hometown of Phoenix on April 18 on Showtime, sources with knowledge of the plans told ESPN. The contracts have been signed but the fight has not yet been formally announced. Benavidez (22-0, 19 KOs), 23, was supposed to make a mandatory defense vs. Avni Yildirim, but with Yildirim injured and unavailable, the WBC allowed Benavidez to make an optional defense. Angulo (26-1, 22 KOs), 35, is coming off an upset split decision win over highly touted Anthony Sims Jr. on Jan. 30. Angulo's only loss was a decision to then-titlist Gilberto "Zurdo" Ramirez in 2018.

Premier Boxing Champions announced today that all “scheduled events for March and April have been cancelled and will be rescheduled for a later date.”

That’s admittedly a bit of a dramatic way to say “two more events are canceled;” aside from Nery on the 28th, the only casualties are the April 11th Jamal James-Thomas Dulorme PBC on FOX show and Showtime’s April 18th David Benavidez vs. Roamer Alexis Angulo-led tripleheader.

Romero-Marinez Part Of Showtime’s Benavidez-Angulo Tripleheader 8/15

Rolando Romero will attempt his first step toward becoming a lightweight champion August 15.

Showtime announced Wednesday morning that the promising prospect will battle Jackson Marinez on August 15 as part of the network’s tripleheader from Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut. The 12-round Romero-Marinez match will be broadcast along with a 12-round main event between WBC super middleweight champ David Benavidez and Alexis Angulo, as well as a 10-round heavyweight fight that’ll pit Otto Wallin against Travis Kauffman.

Boxing Scene previously reported that the Benavidez-Angulo and Wallin-Kauffman fights are part of the Showtime’s three-bout broadcast August 15.

The 24-year-old Romero (11-0, 10 KOs), who is promoted by Floyd Mayweather’s company, and Marinez (19-0, 7 KOs) will fight for the WBA’s interim lightweight title. Ukraine’s Vasiliy Lomachenko (14-1, 10 KOs) is recognized as the WBA’s true “super” champion at 135 pounds, but Baltimore’s Gervonta Davis (23-0, 22 KOs) owns the WBA’s world lightweight title as well.

Nevertheless, Las Vegas’ Romero will encounter his best opponent since he turned pro in December 2016. The Dominican Republic’s Marinez, 29, also will take a significant step up in competition when he meets Romero.

Marinez is ranked sixth among the WBA’s lightweight contenders. Romero is rated 10th.

Benavidez (22-0, 19 KOs) and Angulo (26-1, 22 KOs) were supposed to headline a Showtime Championship Boxing card April 18 at Arizona Federal Theatre in Phoenix, but that show was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The 23-year-old Benavidez won back the WBC 168-pound title in his last fight, a ninth-round knockout of Anthony Dirrell (33-2-1, 24 KOs) on September 28 at Staples Center in Los Angeles.

The WBC previously stripped Benavidez of that belt because he tested positive for cocaine in August 2018.

Sweden’s Wallin will compete as part of this card for the first time since testing WBC champ Tyson Fury last September 14 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Wallin lost a 12-round unanimous decision to England’s Fury (30-0-1, 21 KOs), but he opened a huge gash over Fury’s right eye with a punch in the second round and gave the unbeaten Brit a tougher time than many anticipated.

Sweden’s Wallin (20-1, 13 KOs, 1 NC) was supposed to square off against Australia’s Lucas Browne (29-2, 25 KOs) on March 28 at Park MGM’s Park Theater in Las Vegas. The 29-year-old Wallin withdrew from that 10-rounder, which Showtime was scheduled to televise, after a suffering a fractured left foot late in February.

The 34-year-old Kauffman (32-3, 23 KOs, 1 NC) hasn’t boxed since Cuban southpaw Luis Ortiz (31-2, 26 KOs, 2 NC) knocked him out in the 10th round of their scheduled 10-round bout in December 2018 at Staples Center. Kauffman, of Reading, Pennsylvania, underwent shoulder surgery following his loss to Ortiz, which kept Kauffman out of the ring in 2019.

It wouldn't be different from the Benavidez/Dirrell bout.

Boxing Scene has been informed that Alantez Fox, Mykal’s older brother, is a potential replacement preparing to fill in for Showtime’s main event August 15 at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut. Alantez Fox could face either WBC super middleweight champion David Benavidez or Alexis Angulo if either fighter tests positive for COVID-19 or withdraws from their 12-round, 168-pound title fight for another reason.

Alantez Fox is not ranked in the WBC’s top 15 at super middleweight. If he were to oppose Phoenix’s Benavidez (22-0, 19 KOs), it probably would be a non-title fight.

It's still missing from the schedule, although I haven't found any news anywhere stating that it's canceled. In fact, to the contrary, I've read that Alantez Fox has been lined up as a replacement in case anyone tests positive for COVID. Although I don't think I'd bother watching Angulo vs. Fox if that's what it came to.

Benavidez: My Main Goal Is To Get To Caleb Plant; That's Fight Fans Want The Most

“My main goal is to get to Caleb Plant,” Benavidez said recently during Showtime’s virtual press conference. “That’s the fight I want the most. I feel like that’s the fight the fans want the most. Since, you know, we’re [with] the same promotion company, it should be fairly easy. You know, I was hoping to get that fight by the end of this year, you know, but seeing that the pandemic, it kind of messed up a lot of things. So, you know, I’m not looking past Roamer Angulo. You know, he looks like a great fighter. He looks like a strong fighter. So, I wanna get past this fight, and then hopefully, by the beginning of next year we can get to Caleb Plant.”

Benavidez informed BS.com following the aforementioned press conference that he expects to battle Turkey’s Yildirim (21-2, 12 KOs) next, hopefully before the end of 2020, to satisfy his mandatory obligation with the WBC.

“He’s a great fighter,”
Benavidez said in reference to Plant. “I’m a great fighter. I just feel like, you know, we’re gonna get this fight going. There’s a lot of bad blood there, so I feel like it’s a great fight to watch.”

Showtime will televise two bouts before Benavidez-Angulo on Saturday night, starting at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT.

Promising prospect Rolando Romero (11-0, 10 KOs), a 24-year-old lightweight from Las Vegas, is set to meet Dominican contender Jackson Marinez (19-0, 7 KOs) in a 12-round, 135-pound fight for the WBA’s vacant interim lightweight title. In the opener of the tripleheader, Swedish heavyweight contender Otto Wallin (20-1, 13 KOs, 1 NC) and Travis Kauffman (32-3, 23 KOs, 1 NC), of Reading, Pennsylvania, will square off in a 10-rounder.

Benavidez weighed 170 pounds.. didn’t try to lose any weight. Has now been stripped a second time.. first was due to cocaine.

Angulo can still win the belt if he beats Benavidez.

Is Ben even serious about 168 division?

I saw an interview with David Benavidez and his father some time ago and they struck me as switched on and well prepared.
I didn't know about the testing positive for coke thing and now being stripped twice doesn't look good.
Perhaps I need to take a closer look at him now, I hope he doesn't go down that slippery slope into the dark side and waste his talent and end up on the scrap heap.
He's a young man and has the potential to do very well in the sport, but he's got to pull it together before all gets lost.
It's up to him.

For the 2nd fight of his career he weighed in at 180, when he was only 16 years old, and he didn't look super fat or anything:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B70EGvI0qZo

So he might be cutting quite a bit to get to 168. A move to 175 is probably in his future.
