Pat Barrett - what to watch/where to begin

Post by FightFanPlan »

Hello,

Recently I've noticed that Pat Barrett's career is always spoken of fondly whenever he is working a corner on a TV show.

I also see frequent tweets about how 'tough', 'nasty' or 'hard' he was.

His career was before my time and I haven't come across him yet when watching other fighters back. Had a quick look and not loads of names I'm familiar with on his record.

Wondering if he's a fighter worth looking into and if so, what would you recommend seeking out?

Thanks

Loved Pat Barret, lovely Ray Robinson type hooks that got him plenty of ko’s, didn’t turn up for his world title shot and didn’t get his mojo back after that, I’d recommend watching any fight before his 2nd loss (had a loss early in his career)

Barrett scored one of the most vicious ko's you would ever see against Calamati in Italy.

The Boyle fight was good, plus Calamati of course.

Loved watching Barrett, always looking for a KO and he could bang.
His KO of Calamati was at a time when every other british fighter seemed to go to Italy and endure frustrating points defeats.
His loss to Manning Galloway (does anyone remember the strange full page ads that used to appear in one of the british boxing mags for Galloway and his WBO title?) was very frustrating. If his world title chance had came against a more attacking fighter rather than a back foot defensive styled fighter, he may well have ended up with a world belt round his waist.

His KO of Tony Willis to win the British title was every bit as brutal as the one against Calamati.

Would politely disagree. Not a case of not turning up and getting mojo back, just simply wasn't world level, despite an exciting KO-focused approach. We talk a lot about how todays' fighters are given easy routes to world titles, but in 1992 the WBO title was very lightly regarded and Galloway already had 11 losses - need to put things in perspective here. Loved Barrett, but he was Euro level (no shame in that), rather than world class, as proven by his subsequent loss to Del Bryan.

There is a kayo of his on youtube against a Mexican fellow whom he nearly decapitates with a left hook up in Glasgow. They probably heard the 'crack' in Edinburgh. His win over Denmark's Racheed Lawal is also worth watching because Pat catches a big right in the opening moments and is completely gone but instinctively moves his head to avoid the follow-up from Lawal, who could really whack himself and was later sadly murdered outside a nightclub. Barrett blew frustratingly hot and cold and I often wonder if he fought too often in his prime. He was fighting every five minutes and did nothing when he moved up to welterweight.

That’s a fair comment, Galloway was pretty useful and knew his way around a ring although was a bit “spoily”, he wasn’t an elite champ though so your right about Barret finding his level.

Yeah from what I remember of him he didn’t go in the trenches too often, was good on his feet, could look after himself and do 12 rounds comfortably which all help with longevity.

I have thousands of fights. I had a channel several years ago and i took it down because of copyright issues. I had over 1000 fights up on my new channel until a company called csisports put 3 copyright breaches to Youtube and had my cannel removed. My previous channel had over 5000 fights.

Yes, thats correct. I decided to start another channel during lock down but kept it a little bit quiet and put on over 1000 fights. Each dvd took around 4 hours to rip then this time I cut all the fights individually and put them on. All was going well until the said media company had issues with 3 fights from around 1997 and put in 3 separate complaints. Well on YouTube it's 3 strikes and your out.

I wouldn't mind but the 3 fights weren't even of big significance, a Tony Tubbs fight which wasn't against anyone special. A Vinnie Paz fight again nothing special and a Tyrone Trice fight. Total bollox really. I wasted most of the summer putting the channel back together and was getting a few hundred subscribers and more joining daily.

Anyway no point in crying over spilled milk.

Barrett has said the getting to 140lbs was hard , but when he was moved to welter it took the edge off his training. That he should of stayed at 140 but I think his management saw Galloway as beatable and the light welter champs as too good or too expensive to get over here.
