Jimmy Cable - RIP

Just been told that former British and European light-middleweight champion Jimmy Cable has sadly died. I knew Jimmy had gone off the rails but this is still a shock.

Very sad news. Game lad was Jimmy. Remember watching him on the bbc against Buster Drayton. The American was
better known as one of Hagler's chief sparring partners with plenty of L's on his cv. Unfortunately he could bang as well, and
demolished Jimmy with the proverbial swinging hook. He did the same to Mark Kaylor a month later, also televised. Check that fight out if you want to see some inept refereeing of the highest order.

Kenny Noye was the Brinks Matt gangster who also killed a policeman. He had a row on the M25 with a fella, stabbing him to death while the fiancee watched on. The fiancee was Jimmy Cables daughter.
Noye fled to Spain but the daughter ended up going out there with the old bill to identify him.
She has been in witness protection ever since, changed her name, while Noye has been behind the door, but I guess he will be getting out soon.

RIP Cable had lovely boxing skills and on his night could really put it together. Throughly deserves to be remembered as a former Southern Area, British Champion and European champion.

Mike Jacobs,shocking refereeing there,was he always that bad ?

He was later downgraded as a referee after a Southern Area title fight involving Finchley banger John Maloney and gutsy Gary Nickels, in which Nickels took a first-round pasting on the ropes and Jacobs was too slow to get in. He was given no actual reason for his downgrading and took the Board to the High Court to get a reason but lost the case, after which he dropped out of refereeing altogether.

JImmy's European title win over Said Skouma in France in 1984 is surely one of the bravest showings by a British fighter abroad. Skouma hit him with everything for round after round but Jimmy refused to crack and came back to stop the exhausted Frenchman in the 11th.

I actually watched his fight with Drayton just three days ago before finding the sad news about him here. I remember really enjoying his bouts with Nick Wilshire.

Yeah, that case was notorious and i think when the media frenzy brought the term "road rage" into the mainstream.
Got off with killing the undercover cop but her testimony put him down.

I watched him box the ears off Nick Wilshire in a 10-rounder at Wembley in early 1983. Wilshire, a former Olympian, was 19-0 and managed by Mickey Duff, who prided himself on his matchmaking skills but Cable had plenty of bottle to go with his ability and romped to the decision. He repeated the feat a year later for the British light-middleweight title but weightmaking and the war with Skouma for the European title eventually told and Jimmy was blown away by Prince Rodney in 1985. Rodney hit him so hard that Jimmy literally flew into the air before hitting the canvas.

Why was cable thrown in against Drayton so early? Also why was Kaylor allowed to fight Drayton after the win when they knew he was dangerous

To be fair to Kaylor's team, Drayton wasn't the original opponent. I can't remember who he was scheduled to face but
the fight was high up on the Bruno/Bonecrusher bill, so massive exposure was assured. At the time of Cable facing
Drayton, they'd both had a similar number of fights, the American was considered a stepping stone journeyman (he had a stack of losses on his record) so no one really foresaw what was to happen in that fight. The naturally conditioned Drayton was the obvious stand in for the Kaylor bout, and with Kaylor a bit of a golden boy with a disq' the only blemish on his cv he was still strongly fancied with the bookies and observers alike. At the end of the day, Drayton was still considered a hard man but basically a wild swinger. To be fair to Drayton, like an Andries, his boxing story is a good one.

I think Mickey Duff pulled a fast one on Doug Bidwell, Cable's manager, because the two men disliked each other and Cable had just licked Duff fighter Nick Wilshire (for the second time) to win the British title. It was a stupid match but at least Cable came back to win the European title in an amazing display of courage and stamina six weeks later in France against Said Skouma.
As for Drayton against Kaylor, the Philadelphia fighter came in as a late substitute for James "Hard Rock" Green on a Sunday evening Wembley show televised in the States. Kaylor was a full middleweight, of course, and a talented one at that and the American factor probably convinced Duff and Terry Lawless to take the risk.
