So, is Winky Wright just a guy who beat an undersized Mosley and a shot Trinidad?

After watching the Taylor fight again, I've changed my mind & I think that Winky took the play away from him and outworked him. Regardless of what I think, most of the ringside press were unified in saying Wright was the deserved winner.

Winky took too many shots in the middle rounds, sure. But he had Taylor flustered on the ropes quite a lot.

We know that Taylor's young, strong, fast & a major talent. IMO the Tito win, being so easy, was brushed off as Trinidad being in poor shape - unfairly. And Mosley, being smaller, was rated in the top 10 p4p and had worn down DLH.

I'm not saying Wright's a legend. But he's been testing himself in his last five fights (let's not forget the tough Soliman) and has been very effective. Though known as 'merely' a block and counter fighter, he was active against Tito, backed up Taylor, staggered Soliman and controlled Mosley.

Regarding the pound for pound argument, has Mayweather been doing anything near this since 2002?

I know I'm digressing from your question, but seeing a 34/35 year old Wright beat up Tito and Moseley and "win" (IMO) vs Taylor.... Makes me realise just how good Harry Simon was and good have been.

Think Mosley showed vs Vargas and also vs DLH (although he clearly lost that one) that he can cope with the strength of a fully fledged Light Middle. His speed is gone, his power dimishing and without those he is not the fighter he was... but I don't think he was outsized per se, he looked "stronger" than DLH if nothing else.

I just hope Wright doesn't mess up the last few chapters of his career with greed. For me, he is just off legacy secured greatness (DLH, Barrera, Hopkins, Jones, Toney, Mayweather, Morales, Pacquiao and Alvarez are the fighters who have that currently) he is so close and I really want him to attain it, so I hope he reconsiders his decision not to fight Taylor again.

I still don't think his achievements match up quite to Mayweather over the last few years. Mosley hadn't had a geniune world class win in many a year prior to the Wright fight, and looked lethargic and slow (if strong) at Light Middle in his fights vs Marquez and DLH. Tito was in shape and it was a masterclass - and I don't buy this "his mind wasn't on the job" but Wright had only done what Hopkins had also done, and Tito definately didn't like being punched at Middleweight.

Mayweather did a job on Gatti and also beat Judah, who although wasn't recognised as a champion, did have an excellent resume. For me, these two wins still is comparable to the Tito and Mosley ones.

Now, if Wright actually got the official nod vs Taylor (as I saw it) then I think we would have a new P4P #1.

I actually think this older Wright is better than the younger one. He keeps making little refinements, is so much stronger inside now, and tougher. There isn't great variety in what he does - as with, say, Kessler - but is so good as what he sticks to that he can succeed at the highest level. I've always been a Winky fan, I really enjoyed the 1st McKart fight, and the British fights, especially v Dodson. Dodson was a major prospect who was even profiled by The Ring as such, & Winky put on a masterclass.

I give WW full credit for beating Mosley, SSM looked like he had something wrong with him in fight one - maybe coming off the roids - but in fight two Mosley looked fit, fast & strong, and WW won clear enough. I don't go with the notion that SM had no biz being at 154, he was good enough to beat DLH (controversially). I think the notion that Mosley and Tito were bad avoids the important notion of just how damn good Wright is.

Mayweather beat a Judah who embarrassed and disgraced himself before the fight (ie Baldomir) and then exceeded all negative expectations by embarrassing and disgracing himself during the fight. IMO Mitchell, Corley, Gatti & Bruseles weren't really up to much, either. Getting to the point that I can't wait for PBF's Tarver to come along, I've had enough of him.

Simon was a waste. But Harry should've stayed at 154 lbs and away from the driver's seat. With that WBO title he could have really taken things steadily and learned his trade -and peaked late, Calzaghe style. He did well to beat Winky, even though it could've been a draw. It was a great fight. I liked his win over Wayne Alexander, a very exciting fight. But the Lueshing fight showed that he wasn't a very polished fighter. The way Lueshing dwarved him, he should never have gone up to middleweight. Simon was a great combination puncher, with a superb workrate, but he could look pint sized & pedestrian against the bigger men like Krajnk.

The problem is, Tito and Mosley have fought people MADE for them all the way through. We are so used to seeing this in boxing, we forget what a proper bout looks like. When they fought people who they were NOT MADE for then look what happened i.e. Winky happened.

God point. And Winky often had to face whatever tough/difficult fighters was available. i definitely think he fine tuned himself & learned a lor vs McKart, Mullings, Hernandez, Candelo, Vargas, Simon
