F@cking lovely combo

Post by margaret thatcher »

Let's just discuss the ending itself, whatever there is to say about Pov, this was a f@cking nice combo , jab, slip and dip, booming left uppercut. It was text book and the result was devastating

How many hws lately can pull of a jab-leftuppercut KTFO at a high level? dude gets some props

also whyte got hit so hard I could swear his face morphed into chisora's there for a moment

Watch Whyte tucking his elbow in, Povetkin conned him into thinking he was throwing a left hook to the body.

Textbook.

In slow motion you can actually see Dill realise the game is over. No shame in being ktfo by Povetkin though.

Boxing porn that, right out the top drawer, I've seen a fair amount of tweets saying can you imagine what Wilder wouldve done to Whyte had he landed that shot, as if Wilder has that in his locker

Wilder could have his left arm amputated for all the difference it would make to his game.

That's why Povetkin is a truly elite level competitor. This was a brilliant tool exactly against Whyte, utilized perfectly.

Thats a devastating loss for Whyte; as others have previously written - that punch was perfectly and skilfully delivered; there was nothing lucky about the punch. With skills like that its easy to see Povetkin weathering the early storm to repeat the win again if there is a rematch.

It made me smile to read Anthony Joshua giving Whyte advise following the loss. Stating "I believe if you smell or see a drop of blood you have to take them out" ... I assume this is something that Joshua has learnt since his own last fight against the flabby untrained Ruiz who took him the distance.

If Whyte gets the rematch before Xmas as he hopes, I think he will be no closer to fighting Fury or Joshua following that loss.

KO losses take it out of you psychologically and physically.

The second heavy knockout of his career plus some wars.

Let's see how he comes back. AJ decided to get on his bike for the rematch, but needed to lose plenty of weight to do it.

Presumably he learned that lesson by, er, smelling blood when he put Ruiz down in the first fight, going in to take him out, and getting caught with a monstrous left hook that ended it as a meaningful contest...

:TU: Whyte's obviously improved a lot since the AJ fight, but skills like that move are masterful - you can't learn that in just a few years. I hope Povetkin's legs are better next time though.

Yeah, Povetkin outsmarted him and landed an absolute peach.

I was watching with a few casual mates, one called it a lucky punch, you will be glad to know I set him straight :box:

It would have been one thing if Whyte was hanging his chin out and PoV caught him with his eyes closed like Oliver McCall, but the Russian had regularly been banging him to the ribs, looked to be doing the same again but instead brought it up, Whyte didn't even see it coming which completely maximised the effect.
It's like in cricket with the quick bowlers using a slow ball, you can only do it once in a while and you need to use it to maximum effect

He landed a characteristically whinged uppercut on a pretty much already KO'd and falling Ortiz in their first fight

It's not really much of a presence or threat in his artillery though. He was utterly useless on the inside when Fury took it to him there too.....he needs range for that long right

Povetkin is not the kind of guy you want to be in a technical fight with. Even if he can't land his shot he probably has figured out something and is trying to do it. He's got an encyclopedia of potential fight ending sequences that he's working through in his head to see if you're open to it. You're walking on a tight rope. The best thing to do is keep him at range and if he does creep in close you have to clinch him up or get out of there Otherwise, you might end up like Carlos Takam or Whyte, unconscious on the canvas. He's also got so much experience that he knows what to do when hurt or stunned. He said after the fight that they worked on the left and right uppercut in the lead up to the fight. He comes in and gets in that position and throws hooks to the body for a few rounds, setting up the punch. I remember thinking that he was going to the body more than usual as I was watching the fight.

Good points. I've said before the fight, that Whyte sould have kept Povetkin outside, using jab. And Whyte was doing it, but he wasn't just that good in it, he's still a learning boxer, his major style of fighting was different, so he wasn't ready to utilize anti-Povetkin style perfectly. While Povetkin was overall prepared better, he mainly suffered some troubles because of his age, his speed and reaction aren't the same anymore. You can see, how he was lingering before he was knocked down for the first time. However, Povetkin's fundamentals and boxing IQ are better. He indeed had a lot of tools and was figuring out, how to utilize those, he wasn't fighting thoughtlessly. You can see, how he was trying those uppercuts through the fight. He even was knocked down for the second time, after he failed an attack with an uppercut, but still Povetkin was able to make Whyte opened and to connect. That's the elite level skills and experience.

He's not a cruiserweight. He fights at his natural weight, which through his career has varied between the numbers about 20-30 lbs heavier than the cruiserweight limit.

Fighting at natural weight? Not a single cruiserweight champion fights at their “natural weight”. They all cut weight ( same as any other division ).

Povetkin was still fighting at 91kg as 21 year amateur with same day weigh in.

So he is an undersized heavyweight who could make cruiserweight ( which makes his achievements even more impressive) which was the point I was trying to make.
