Navarrete vs. Villa WBO Featherweight Title Fight Ordered, Magdaleno Pulled

Efforts to have Jessie Magdaleno skip the line en route to a featherweight title have proven to be for naught.

Boxing Scene has learned that an ordered vacant World Boxing Organization featherweight title fight between Magdaleno and Mexico’s Emanuel Navarrete is no longer on the books. A purse bid hearing which was won by Top Rank to promote the fight is now considered to have defaulted, due to a lack of written confirmation citing Magdaleno’s willingness to fight for the title.

“WBO Participant Jessie Magdaleno was granted a final 24-hour term upon notice of the “Resolution” to confirm in writing whether he will fight against WBO Participant Emanuel Navarrete for the Vacant WBO Featherweight Championship as ordered,” Luis Batista-Salas, chairman of the WBO Championship Committee noted in a resolution statement to both parties, a copy of which has been obtained by BS.com. “Lastly, Magdaleno was advised that failure to comply with the time frame established therein would be understood as if he would not participate and fight Navarrete and waiving any and rights therein.

“Consequently, having the Committee proceed in selecting and determining the first available contender in the WBO Featherweight Division. Whereas, on Tuesday, August 18, 2020, this Committee confirmed receipt of written communication on behalf of Mr. Jeremy Koegel, Counsel for Top Rank, Inc., promotional representative for Jessie Magdaleno, advising that shortly after Top Rank won the “Purse Bid” for the bout, Top Rank sent Magdaleno a bout contract offering monetary compensation consistent with the terms of the bid. Top Rank has not received a response from Magdaleno since that time, and all indications are that Magdaleno intends to decline the bout on terms consistent with the “Purse Bid”. Therefore, Top Rank requests to move forward with the fight with the next available contender in the WBO Featherweight Division.”

The benefactor of such a fallout is Ruben Villa (18-0, 5KOs), a 23-year old featherweight contender from Salinas, California who was the highest-rated available challenger to the WBO title prior to the start of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Villa somehow lost his place in line upon the first update of WBO rankings since the global health crisis, with the July 2020 set showing Navarrete (32-1, 28KOs) and Magdaleno (28-1, 18KOs) ranked ahead of him.

Villa’s team—Banner Promotions and Thompson Boxing—were understanding of Navarrete’s placement, having reigned as WBO junior featherweight champ before vacating to challenge for the 126-pound crown. The advancement of Magdaleno, however, did not sit well.

Justification for Magdaleno came in his being the only boxer among the WBO Top Four at the time to have fought during the pandemic, claiming a 10th round disqualification win over Dominican Republic’s Yenifel Vicente this past June in Las Vegas. The feat didn’t pass the smell test among those who sensed that Magdaleno’s alliance with Top Rank—with whom the WBO has always enjoyed a healthy working relationship—played a greater role in his being in position to fight for the title before Villa.

It proved to be a moot point.

“As of Wednesday, August 19, 2020, the World Boxing Organization has not received any communication, whether by Magdaleno or his manager Frank Espinoza confirming his participation in the bout as mentioned earlier,” noted Batista-Salas. “Moreover, the 24-hour period granted has elapsed, and this Committee must resolve the matter at hand and proceed according to the WBO Rules and Regulations of World Championship Contests.

“Therefore, in light of the preceding, and per the authority, powers, rights and discretion conferred by the WBO Rules and Regulations to resolve the matter at hand, this Committee must adjudicate the matter at hand, and hereby determines as follows:

NOW, BE IT RESOLVED by the WBO Championship Committee, which issues the following ruling:

1. The WBO World Championship Committee hereby selects and determines WBO Featherweight Contender Ruben Villa as the first available contender in the aforementioned division and orders commencement of negotiations with Team Navarrete for the Vacant WBO Featherweight Championship Title.

2. The WBO World Championship Committee, in its discretion, reserves the right to determine and issue any other ruling deem necessary, helpful, and convenient to accomplish the purposes policies and intent of the WBO Rules.

“This is a final decision of the WBO Championship Committee. The affected WBO participant may appeal such determination to the Complaint and Grievance Committee as per Rule 34, which as per Rule 3(e) of the WBO Appeals Regulation, must be submitted in writing to the WBO President within fourteen (14) days of this decision as to its sole and exclusive remedy.”

Upon acceptance of the WBO’s invitation, Villa will then be instructed to enter negotiations with Navarrete. Should the two sides not come to terms within the prescribed period, the fight will then head to a purse bid hearing.

Villa followed up a three-win campaign in 2019 with his most recent victory, a 10-round decision over Alexei Collado this past January in Shreveport, Louisiana.

Navarrete made his featherweight debut this past June, scoring a 6th round stoppage of Uriel Lopez behind closed doors in Mexico City. The bout was his sixth in just 13 months, having racked up five defenses of his WBO 122-pound title in just a nine-month period. Navarrete’s title reign began with a 12-round win over unbeaten Isaac Dogboe in December 2018, knocking out the Ghana-bred boxer in the 12th round of their rematch last May for the first of five successful defenses before vacating the title earlier this summer.

RV4 is one of my favorite prospects but I dont think he's quite ready for the likes of Navarrete. He's got the slick-boxing skills to make it close but I'll be surprised and very impressed if he beats Vaquero. A respectable loss by Villa shouldnt hinder him from progressing on to win a world title in another year or so.

Villa: Navarrete Fight Is Coming At Perfect Time In Our Career

Ruben Villa always had a backup plan, whether it was waiting for his well-deserved title shot or for the schedule to free up from the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

In the end, things finally played out for a featherweight contender whom nobody is in a hurry to face.

It required his riding out some unnecessary drama, but Villa is back in position to contend for the now-vacant World Boxing Organization (WBO) featherweight title. The 23-year old from Salinas, California has been offered the opportunity by the WBO to begin negotiations with Mexico’s Emanuel Navarrete (32-1, 28KOs), entering the equation after former 122-pound titlist Jessie Magdaleno withdrew from the ordered title fight

Magdaleno was advanced in the rankings over Villa, who held the number-two spot in the WBO 126-pound set for all of 2020 until the most recent update this past July.

“When they moved me down to third, I was kind of disappointed—but I kind of seen how it happened that way knowing how boxing is,” Villa told BS.com. “But when Magdaleno decided not to take the fight for whatever reason it was, we were excited.

“I was already in the gym, we were training and sparring for months, waiting for an opportunity to come. Now it’s coming at the perfect time in our career.”

Villa (18-0, 5KOs) has been out of the ring since a 10-round unanimous decision win over Alexei Collado this past January live on Showtime from Shreveport, Louisiana.

The bout marked his latest step up in class, having been properly groomed from prospect to contender by Banner Promotions and Thompson Boxing Promotions, along with head trainer Sam Garcia. Dating back to an eight-round shutout win over unbeaten Ruben Cervera last January—also in Shreveport and on Showtime—the plan was to create a path that would lead to the title stage in 2020.

There existed for a moment the possibility of securing yet another such fight if it meant having to watch two other contenders vie for the title he has eyed all year.

“Our plan was basically, if the title shot didn’t happen. we would take on a Top 15, Top 20 kind of guy,” explained Garcia. “It’s the natural progression for where he’s been. We’ve been fighting pretty tough guys. Look at his past four guys. Luis Lopez is coming off three big wins in his last four fights. His only loss was to Ruben and he’s beaten two undefeated prospects plus Andy Vences this summer.

“Ruben Cervera and Jose Vivas were both undefeated when they fought [Villa]. They both also just won on Top Rank card, Vivas just won a big fight against an unbeaten prospect [Carlos Jackson]. Their only losses are to Ruben, who only lost a few rounds in his last four fights. He’s been ready for this title shot and we were prepared for another tough fight to get there if that’s what it took.”

Instead, it will now just take having to work out a deal with Navarrete’s camp, or else force the fight to a purse bid. Aiding in talks is the recent addition of world-class manager Rick Mirigian, best known for his work with unbeaten, unified 140-pound titlist Jose Ramirez (25-0, 17KOs) and who now serves as an adviser to Villa.

“We have full confidence in Rick,” insists Garcia. “That’s why we hired as an adviser on the team. We felt like, this is someone who can help us get over the top. My mom [Kathy Garcia, head of Garcia Boxing] is a hard negotiator, but is also enjoying being a grandma with my two nieces.

“Boxing is really a dog-eat-dog world, and we need a dog in our corner. That’s where Rick comes in. He’s been a godsend for us, getting more money in Ruben’s pocket and living up to his word.”

The next order of business will be to ensure that Villa now gets his title shot without any more funny business. Top Rank was prepared to stage a fight between Navarrete and Magdaleno this October on an ESPN platform from The Bubble in Las Vegas. With the right deal can come avoiding a purse bid hearing and Villa jumping in without anyone having to break stride.

“Every fight I train and work my ass off like it is a title shot,” notes Villa. “Now that it actually is a title shot, I will do a little more to make myself uncomfortable. I’m going to do that because I know Navarrete is coming to make things uncomfortable. We want to use that to be able to adapt quicker than he will.

“I also feel that I have a better chance of adapting to his style than he does of adapting to my style. I move a lot, and don’t feel that he’s fought anyone who carries the skills and ability that I do.”

Has anyone lost as a prospect and won a title a year later. I know some have done it after loss but how many have done it a year later?

What about Loma, he beat Russell 3 months after losing to Salido

Though he obviously was on the super fast track, seems most dudes take a couple years to be rebuilt after the first loss

If Villa takes a clear loss I imagine they'll have him back in at least 3-5 more fights before another title shot, unless some sort of vacant belt vs tomato can opportunity comes up. He's young and there is no rush really.

Ruben Villa is fighting Emanuel Navarrete with a special purpose this Friday night

Ruben Villa’s morning runs through Salinas, California, were like running through hell. They came with an apocalyptic aura, because off in the distance were the fires lighting up a dawn sky barren of birds.

The air quality was horrendous. The skies were mushroomed dust clouds.

Villa had to take a few days off from running outside, opting to run inside on a treadmill with the doors and windows of the gym closed.

Villa, the 23-year-old southpaw featherweight, will be fighting Emanuel Navarrete (32-1, 1 NC, 28 knockouts) on Friday night for the vacant World Boxing Organization featherweight title on ESPN (10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT) from the MGM Grand Las Vegas Conference Center.

Villa (18-0, 5 KOs) will be fighting for more than a belt.

He has the added motivation of fighting for the Salinas farmers, whose livelihoods have been affected by the raging ‘gigafira,’ the first in recorded history that “burns at least a million acres of land and a level above a ‘megafire.’”

Villa comes from the fields of California. It’s where his paternal grandparents, Ruben and Sylvia, met after arriving from Mexico. Compounding the farmer’s plight was working through the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Between the fires and COVID, I know how it affects farmers every day, and these farmers have to work in these poor conditions,” said Villa, who will be accompanied during his ring walk by Tom Alejo, one of 15 Vietnam vets who survived a rare bone marrow cancer. “I’m living through these fires, but these farmers, they have to work in it. I remember every day I run, everywhere in Salinas is covered by fields.

“I would run and see the workers covered up every day in the hot sun. That motivates me, seeing them out there day and night. I see their hard work. I look at the temperature on my iPhone and it says ‘poor air quality.’

“I have to do my job to help them do their job. That’s helping them in any way I can.”

Rick Mirigian, Villa’s manager, came to Villa about ways that they could support out the farmers. It’s the same thing Mirigian did with Jose Ramirez, the WBC/WBO junior welterweight titlist who has aided farmers in the Central Valley region with their “Fight for Water” campaigns.

“Jose and Ruben have a lot in common,” Mirigian said. “They’re both star fighters who know their roots. It’s why I got involved with Ruben. He has a big heart. He’s a caring individual. He’s connected to his community. Salinas is battling a major fire there, complicating the farm workers who are already at risk from COVID. We had to do something.”

Villa spent time in the fields recently handing out N95 masks and sanitizers to farmers. He’ll be auctioning off his gloves to help raise money for the agricultural workers and fire victims. It’s also why Villa will be wearing the Salinas city crest logo on his trunks, to bring awareness to what they are all fighting.

If not for the fields, Villa realizes, he might not even be here. Max Garcia, Villa’s trainer, once worked in the fields, too, getting a grand sum of 15-cents per box of strawberries.

“My grandparents worked in that heat and at two, or three in the morning, you’ll see these bright lights, and it doesn’t matter the conditions, and you’ll see them out there picking,” Villa said. “I had to do something to help them. I do feel a connection with the farmers. It makes my grateful that my grandparents made sacrifices for me to live, and it motivates the hell of me to do more.

“I want to feel how they feel, to get it from the mud.”

Villa then recounted a story while he was handing out the masks. He saw a mother and her teenaged son working in the field together. The son was backing his mother up as they collected heads of lettuce and strawberries.

“I always knew parents took their kids out there to work with them, but actually seeing it was a little different,” Villa said. “It’s makes me grateful, because that easily could be me. I can’t lose track of that.”

I will be mildly surprised but it would definitely be an upset if he does win. It's a HUGE step up in caliber for RV4 but I admire his boldness. I wish more young prospects had that quality!! This is clearly a high-risk/high-reward type of fight and Villa will need to rely on his slick boxing skills. They are roughly the same height but Navarrete has a big advantage in reach, plus he has fought WAY better opposition than Ruben.

Emanuel Navarrete and Ruben Villa make weight

Emanuel Navarrete and Ruben Villa are now 100 percent set for Friday night’s Top Rank main event on ESPN (10 pm ET, prelims streaming on ESPN+ at 7:30 pm ET), both making weight today for their WBO featherweight title clash.

Navarrete (31-1, 27 KO) was recently the WBO titleholder at 122 pounds, and he vacated that to come up and fight for the featherweight title, also perhaps in search of bigger fights than he was getting at junior featherweight. He weighed in at 126 pounds, the limit for the division.

Villa (18-0, 5 KO) got this fight because, after some fancy rankings maneuvering by the WBO, Jessie Magdaleno didn’t come to terms to fight Navarrete, and Villa was then the next highest ranked fighter, and he took it quickly. The 23-year-old “RV4” has made a name for himself with diehard fans on ShoBox, but this is a big step up, and one he’s wanted. He came in at 125.

Bad Left Hook’s staffers have made their picks for the fight, and we’ll have live coverage tomorrow starting at 7:30 pm ET.

Scott Christ

I’ve liked this matchup since it got made, and I’m glad Villa is getting the shot to graduate from the ShoBox level. He’s a really good boxer, has some slickness, some skills, puts shots together OK, but in all honesty I’m having a really hard time seeing him getting the duke here.

Navarrete’s style and approach can definitely be out-boxed, and Villa has better skills than anyone Navarrete has fought since Isaac Dogboe, and also isn’t 5’2” like Dogboe. That said, Navarrete is still a bigger guy in the dimensions, and I don’t expect him to look small moving up from 122, where he often looked huge in the ring, but even at the presser you can see that Villa’s much closer in natural size to Navarrete than a lot of guys have been, even looks a bit thicker.

I think Villa will win some rounds and make this a little more interesting than Navarrete’s recent fights have been, but I see Navarrete doing the more eye-catching work, probably will be busier, and his pressure could get to Villa late. I think it’s going the distance, but there won’t be controversy, something like a solid 8-4 win for Navarrete. Navarrete UD-12

Wil Esco

Emanuel Navarrete has been about as active a champion as you’ll come across, and while that’s something I’d usually never complain about he hasn’t exactly been in against the stiffest of competition. This outing is certainly a step up from some of his previous opponents of late, and that makes this matchup much more intriguing, but I think Navarrete is still brimming with confidence from the tear he’s been on.

So while Ruben Villa is a good fighter himself, I think his dimensions won’t give him the sort of edge he’d hope for in this type of fight, and considering he’s not much of a knockout puncher this fight will likely be going to the cards. I see Navarette and Villa having a pretty fun fight to watch but one in which Navarette is busy enough to rack up more points on the scorecards, taking the fight over the distance. Navarette UD-12

Patrick L. Stumberg

It’s always interesting when both fighters are entering uncharted territory. Navarrete hasn’t faced a real challenge since Isaac Dogboe, who presented an immensely favorable physical and stylistic matchup. By the same token, for all of his amateur success, Villa’s best professional win came over Luis Alberto Lopez. Navarrete’s never had to deal with a primo technician and Villa has never had to deal with a relentless, top-shelf slugger.

This may be the “unga bunga” part of me that loves watching bruisers beat down boxers talking, but I favor “Vaquero.” His 5.5” reach advantage, motor, power, and offbeat punching angles all look like problems for Villa, who lacks the stopping power to get Navarrete’s respect or blunt his offense. As praiseworthy as Villa’s movement and rock-solid fundamentals are, I just don’t see him surviving the tornado of offense Navarrete brings to the table. Unless those extra four pounds prove game-changing, Navarrete snowballs to a late stoppage. Navarrete TKO-10

Lewis Watson

Navarrete has been going along like a steam train the last couple of years, clearing everything and everyone in his path. He’s a real throwback fighter, willing to take two to land three and often overwhelms an opponent with his output and ferocity. RV4 was a terrific amateur splitting wins against Shakur Stevenson and has looked the real deal as a pro. He’s got a stinging jab, great feet and is patient from the southpaw stance with real defensive attributes that could cause Navarrete problems from the opening bell. He’s better acclimatised to this weight class and I’ve just got a feeling that his ceiling is higher than Navarrete’s. I’ve really enjoyed “Vaquero” over the last couple of years, but have a nagging suspicion that he may become unstuck this weekend. I think Villa’s control of the distance will negate a lot of the pressure Navarrete will try to impose, with his power stifled. Villa UD-12

And the staff winner is...

Emanuel Navarrete (3-1)!

Villa: I'm Best There Is At 126, I Will Control This Weight Class After Navarrete Fight

“Even in bouts where I was favored, I was never truly the A-side or really hyped up, so I didn’t expect much attention,” Villa admitted to Boxing Scene. “We’re fighting for the vacant title, but let’s face it—I’m facing the champion and I am the underdog. It’s a role I’m used to and it’s never bothered me. In fact, it makes each win more satisfying.”

“I’ll make sure they remember me at the end of the night,”
vows Villa. “I already know I’m the best there is at 126 right now. After this fight, I will control this weight class.

“Navarrete being a (former) champion will make it even sweeter.”

I don't know what fight the judges were watching, but the one I was watching I would be hard pressed to give Villa more than two rounds. Navarrete was missing a ton of punches, but still landed enough in my opinion that the points should have been a lopsided decision, especially considering two 10-8 rounds.

Yea it was a weird fight, you have a lot of folks who think Villa really got himself back into it in the 2nd half (thus justifying the 114-112 scorecards) but I really didn't see more than about 3 rounds I thought Villa won. I was expecting much wider cards when the final bell rang.

Kinda agree, he regrouped pretty decently but was losing most rounds. i think ppl confuse neater looking work with more effective. nava looked clumsy but was still landing and landing better, and rube was spending large large portions of the rounds just moving, often only landing jabs when he did land

i thought nava won at least 8 rounds

I had it 115-111 for Navarrete but I wouldn't argue with 114-112. Good fight,
