Ron's whirlwind of verbiage isn't just amateurish; there's something mentally subnormal about it all. It's like he's autistic or in another reality to normal people, the way he goes on. Literally any announcer in history is preferable to him. He's not an announcer!
What I get out of big Ron is quoting him verbatim and then laughing hysterically.
I will never ever ever forget him interviewing some Russian boxer after a Super Series fight, kicking off with an impenetrable minute-long mix of statements and questions, and getting the response "I don't understand. Thank you to God and my family and coach, it was good fight"
This confirms my suspiciouns about Ron existing in another reality to the rest of us.
I get the ironic appeal, but imagine going back on youtube to watch a classic fight and discovering big Ron's calling it. Now you're not just watching a fight. You're also listening to Ron Oooohhhhhhhhh McIntosh proffering elucidating annotations upon the fist-laden exploits in the square ring canvassed circle of the boxing variety as these two sinewy exponents of the punches arcing explode into action............ etc etc. It's unendurable. He ruins every fight.
Oh god, the horror! They'll have to go back and overdub all his fights like the footage is from 1925 and just pretend the technology of sound recording was lost in the UK around 2010
I can see how anyone would find him annoying, his tone and the dictionary vomit and all that.
He’s boxed himself a bit (apparently) and he reads fights decently enough, but his research and knowledge is A1. Even on a tricky gig like the Worlds in Russia last year he had a good bit of background info on every fighter.

Ron is really well researched and I always find he adds interesting colour, but he does perhaps pitch himself at too high a level sometimes!
Another really well educated commentator, or presenter I should say, is Ed Robinson. I was really baffled when Sky stopped giving him so much airtime. Solid bloke as well. One of the nicest in the sport.

It’s arse-backwards. Anyone who’s good and knowledgeable like Ed gets bailed off and anyone who can scream about the grit and determination or repeat a fighter’s exaggerated backstory gets the promotion. I’ve only just realised I haven’t seen him for ages, get him back as well.

Ed Robinson was working behind the scenes for quite a while before doing some of the presenting work.
I think he got the push around the same time as Darke and McCrory.
He occasionally posted on here too.
I dunno is he is still working for SKY or not, but he is another face who is missed.
He put in the years and work required to get his break. When he got It he didn’t disappoint but for some reason wasn’t/isn’t used anywhere near as much as he should be.
Big Ron is probably more suited to radio, where a constant stream of information is required. I don’t mind him on tv, but he can be a bit over-zealous with his descriptions.
Darke & McCrory were excellent together, and Paul Dempsey supporting in the studio (always tuxed up, naturally) gave an additional air of gravitas to proceedings. I look back on those days very fondly.

Those old shows have such an air of sophistication now. Boxing broadcasts have been dragged into the gutter.

Its the little things that can make a difference, like for Pov-Whyte, the first round was close, could feasibly gone either way as they eased into it and not much happened, but instead Adam Smith just insists that Whyte definitely won it , too much trying to force a narrative you know bruh
A good commentator is more like a guide who can educate people and help them form their own opinions instead of just slamming some fanboi nuthugger story on them

One of my biggest bugbears, I’ve given up complaining about it now because it never changes. Absolutely no point in moving an active RBR thread to a different part of the forum where hardly anyone goes, it kills the conversation dead and it’s not like there’s loads of traffic on the board as it is. Mods should at least wait until it drops off the first page of B&I before moving it.
