Egidijus Kavaliauskas vs. Mikaël Zewski - September 12, 2020

Kavaliauskas-Imam, Marriaga-Gonzalez Eyed For September 12

Top Rank is putting together a doubleheader for September 12, at the MGM Conference Center in Las Vegas, according to ESPN Deportes.

The likely main event will match welterweight contenders Egidijus Kavaliauskas and Amir Imam in a crossroads clash.

Kavaliauskas, an Olympian from Lithuania, has been out of the ring since suffering a TKO defeat in his world title challenge Terence Crawford last December. And Amim has been away from the ring since February of 2019, when he lost an eight round unanimous decision to Javier Molina.

Another defeat for either man could spell the end of their days as a top contender.

In the other bout, Colombian featherweight contender Miguel 'Escorpión' Marriaga could face once-beaten Mexican-American contender Joet González.

Marriaga was unable to fight during the year, with two planned bouts being canceled.

He was first scheduled to fight in March in a world title against then WBO champion Shakur Stevenson at the Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York City, but the entire event was canceled at the last minute due to the cornavirus pandemic.

And then last month his planned bout in Las Vegas was canceled, also at the last minute, when opponent Mark John Yap was nearly nine pounds over the contracted weight and the Nevada Commission would not allow the bout to push forward.

Gonzalez has been out of the ring since losing a twelve round decision, last October, in a grudge fight with Shakur Stevenson for the vacant WBO title.

The winner of their fight would move a step closer to another potential world title shot.

Boxing Scene has learned that the opponent for Kavaliauskas is still being sought. Efforts to match up the former title challenger from Lithuania with Albany’s Amir Imam never moved beyond the discussion stage, as the bout was never finalized nor signed by either party, according to sources with knowledge of such talks.

Kavaliauskas has showed his limitations in recent fights, but i think managers wanna keep Imam on some winning track. Another loss would probably end his hopes to do something serious in sport for good. I dont know if there are decent TR welterweights to put against Kavaliauskas. But i would love Kavaliauskas vs Besputin or Butaev. Isnt Maurice Hooker with Top Rank too ?

Three former world title challengers and a longtime contender met the media for a Zoom press conference Thursday afternoon ahead of their can’t-miss doubleheader Saturday from the MGM Grand Conference Center (ESPN+, 7:30 p.m. ET ).

In the 10-round welterweight main event, the man known as “Mean Machine,” Egidijus Kavaliauskas, will take on Canadian contender Mikael Zewski in his first bout since challenging Terence Crawford for the WBO world title last December.

The co-feature will see three-time world title challenger Miguel Marriaga battle recent world title challenger Joet Gonzalez in a crossroads featherweight tilt scheduled for ten rounds.

Here is some of what they had to say to the media.

Mean Machine

“I want to face the best opponents at welterweight. My goal is to become mandatory and fight for another world title. I would like to fight the top names at 147.”

“Zewski is also a pressure fighter like me. I think we have similar styles, and I really believe we will make a very entertaining fight on Saturday. I know the fireworks will begin in the very first round. This will be an action fight!”

“If I get the opportunity to fight Crawford, I would do it all over again. I want to face him again. I know he is beatable. Everyone is. I liked how the fight started, but not how it ended. I lost focus in the middle of the fight. At the end of the day, that fight gave me more confidence. I was definitely in the fight. It made me a better fighter. I corrected the mistakes I did make, and now I’m coming stronger.”

Zewski

“I would love to fight the top guy in the division. That’s Terence Crawford, but I’m not really thinking about that right now. The guy that I have to beat right now is Kavaliauskas, and I have my total focus on him. I’m not looking at the future. Mean Machine is the present, and I’m going to beat him. This will be a great fight. This is a fight that could get ugly, and it could be a war, for sure.”

“I’ve been here before. I feel like I’m home. There is no added pressure. Kavaliauskas is the perfect opponent for me right now. He is the kind of top fighter that will give me the challenge that I want. He is a great fighter and did a great job against Crawford. I want to show everyone that I’m at that level. I have a lot to win. I’m here to get the respect I know I deserve.”

Marriaga

“I have had the opportunity to fight for a world title three times, and I have not been able to be crowned as champion, but we hope that this time around, I can finally conquer a world title. I’m hungry! I really want it. On Saturday night, Joet Gonzalez will face a very strong Miguel Marriaga. I have a great hunger for triumph. The motivation has always been there. I will not rest until I am champion. We will give everything on Saturday to get a big win for Colombian boxing.”

“It would be great to face the winner of the vacant WBO title fight between {Emanuel} Navarrete and {Ruben} Villa, but if that doesn’t happen, I’m ready to face any of the champions in the division.”

Gonzalez

“I told my team that after the world title loss against Shakur, I wanted to get right back in and face the best and biggest names in the division.”

“I want to show everyone that I’m a real contender and a top guy in the division. That’s why I took this challenge against Marriaga. He is one of the best, and I want to show that I’m a real fighter. I want to fight the biggest names possible. I would like to face the winner of Navarrete and Villa. I know I can compete with all these top guys at 126.”

Weigh In Report From The Bubble

Egidijus Kavaliauskas and Mikael Zewski are set to meet at the crossroads.

The pair of welterweight hopefuls both made weight for their scheduled 10-round main event, which airs live from The Bubble (MGM Grand Conference Center) in Las Vegas (Saturday, ESPN+, 7:30 p.m. ET).

Lithuania’s Kavaliauskas (21-1-1, 17KOs) weighed 146.5 pounds for his first fight since a failed title bid in a 9th round stoppage to unbeaten welterweight beltholder and pound-for-pound entrant Terence Crawford last December.

Quebec’s Zewski (34-1, 23KOs) checked in at the welterweight limit of 147 pounds for his first fight since last November.

The evening’s chief support sees Miguel Marriaga making his way to the ring for the first time in 2020, doing so on his third try as he faces Los Angeles’ Joet Gonzalez in a 10-round featherweight bout.

Colombia’s Marriaga (29-3, 25KOs) weighed 125.9 pounds for the occasion, coming two months after making weight in The Bubble for an eventually canceled clash with Philippines’ Mark John Yap who showed up nine pounds over the limit for their July 16 clash. Gonzalez (23-1, 14KOs) did his job at the scale, weighing 125.8 pounds for his first fight since a 12-round title fight loss to Shakur Stevenson (14-0, 8KOs) last October.

Marriaga was due to challenge for Stevenson’s featherweight title this past March at Madison Square Garden in New York City, only for the event to get canceled during the initial wave of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Also on the show:

Aleem Jumakhonov (8-3-2, 4KOs) weighed 126.5 pounds, significantly lighter than Jorge Ramos (7-2-1, 4KOs) who weighed 127 pound on his second attempt at the scale for their eight-round featherweight contest. Ramos initially weighed 127.4 pounds before shedding the extra 0.4 pounds during the allotted one-hour time limit to make the 127-pound contracted weight limit.

Anthony Chavez (8-1, 3KOs) and Adan Gonzales (5-3-2) each weighed 129.1 pounds for their scheduled six-round junior lightweight clash.

Manuel Flores (8-0, 5KOs) was a slim and fit 117.3 pounds, while Jonathan Rodriguez (8-0, 3KOs) weighed 118 pounds for their six-round battle of unbeaten bantamweights.

San Diego’s Eric Puente (3-0) weighed 137.7 pounds for his four-round lightweight bout versus Luis Norambuena (4-5-1, 0KOs) who weighed 135.6 pounds for their show opener.

Gonna tune in for the 2 main bouts after the UFC card is finished.

I'm actually looking forward to the co-main (Marriaga vs. Gonzalez) a bit more than the main because I think it's more evenly matched and will have more action.

Gonzalez looked good enough....he’ll probably get another title shot at some point.

Maybe a future Navarette opponent.
