Toney at his best would outbox Alvarez. Canelo wouldn't land anything significant.

X3. At his very best, the great James "Lights Out" was as good as they came. A very complete fighter.

X4 and yes, James "Lights Out" Toney was as good as they came and would out-counter Canelo behind his jabs and combinations for a wide decision win.

Toney wins, and I don't think Canelo brings the agression to unsettle him all that much, but dude has many close fights at mw, and not always vs too good of opposition. That should be remembered when gushing over him

draw vs sanderlane williams and mccallum
splits vs tiberi, sosa, and johnson
md over mccallum
way down on cards vs nunn

Obviously some of this is at a really high level and he usually got it done tbf, but some of this stuff about being as good as they come, totally complete etc is flattering

Toney
Canelo not busy enough to outwork him and not good enough to outslick him

James Toney is one of my all time favorite fighters.

That being said. Fans overrate him as a Middleweight.

Canelo would beat him by a close decision.

Toney was at his best at 168 and beyond. At 160 I feel like he would've been outfought, pressured on the ropes, and he probably hit harder by Canelo.

At 168, the Toney that dismantled Iran Barkley would look magnificent against Canelo I think.

At 160, no such James Toney ever was. He was too drained. He was always too big for Middleweight, and was killing himself to fight there.
